What Video Games Have You Been Playing #11: I should go

I added voice commands to my path of exile game so I no longer need to use the 1-5 keys for flasks. I just say one, two etc. Voice Attack is available through steam for $12. On test maps it is working great.

That's really cool. I'm looking forward to the day when games have fully-integrated controls that take advantage of gesturing, voice work and eye movement without those things being gimmicks.

Well, my left hand is not fond of hitting those keys and sometimes I will hit the wrong key and make a mess. I'll see if voice works better in panic situations.

playing one handed though is strange.

My left hand is too dumb to hit all the keys properly in action-type games. Like in League of Legends and Grim Dawn I can't take too many items with active effects because my fingers just aren't able to hit too many different keys consistently correctly.

Voice Attack can be your friend.

I'm not sure my desktop actually has a microphone (I assume this requires a microphone to use?)
yes one is required. Mine is built into a video camera I use for skype and zoom calls, but my monitor might have one also. Voice Attack goes looking for them when you install it. Microphones are pretty cheap I think. I'm sure laptops have them built in.

Yeah, I know laptops usually have a built-in webcam/microphone thingamajig, but I had to buy a wireless adapter for my desktop so I'm guessing it probably didn't come with a microphone.

I don't think either of my monitors has a microphone or webcam but not 100% sure. I don't use skype or do any other videophone stuff.

 back when I used to play World of Warcraft real hardcore, in Arena PvP, you had like sixty ******* keybinds that you all had to know by heart and then an additional 20 macros that you wrote yaself because there wasn't that much good information on the internet and you always had bad latency but needed the utmost split seconds reactions in order to pull off crazy stunts..

there is a certain trick you can do, it only works either as rogue or night elf I think. whenever a projectile is flying at you with very high speed, you hit your vanish key a millisecond before impact and what happens is the projectile just disappears, enemy goes on cooldown and you disappear into the shadows.

WoW was so ridiculous with its keybinds. I remember one of the best players literally had his Intercept bound to I, the execute to E, the charge to C and so on. guy had some big hands and insane reflexes.

Nowadays I can't do that stuff anymore. And since many new games need Xbox/PS controllers anyway I suck really hard at them. I miss those times..

Have pity on a poor man with a terrible reaction time :(

@Lexicus I have not done so myself, but I've heard that you can plug in your smartphone and just send data from its mic through its USB

I somehow doubt it works natively plug and play but it might be something to look into, might be as simple as a few settings windows

@Lexicus

I have a pair of these and they are fantastic. Great mic and you get Dolby surround sound in your games. Mine are corded and not wireless, so they are cheaper. I believe that they are under $100 in the USA.

Corsair Void Headphones

Technically, any good pair of headphones gets you surround sound, Dolby or not.

I've got six keys voice activated now and I haven't died yet using them in T-12 maps. Nothing too stressful though. there seems to be a bit of a lag, so I'm tweaking the settings a bit.

Well, that's true. But with mine I can hear stuff behind me. Really scary when playing Alien: Isolation. :)

a pair of studio headphones will go a long way, for many tasks. one of those items where it's worth to spend a few more bucks.

Just dipped my toes into Starcraft II. It's a.......interesting leap going from grand strategy (HoI4, Stellaris) down to classic RTS.

I got punch club from the $1 humble bundle yesterday, played it for about 3 hours last night. It's not really a good game so why did I spend 3 hours on it? It's like a phone game, you can just mindlessly play it without thinking much like to zone out and I was tired so that or watching tv.

The game itself is well done, the animation is retro but polished, it has a ridiculous but interesting enough story, the pacing is pretty good. But holy hell it is a grind fest. And all the fights are simulated. You pick what abilities to use and then it just simulates them so there is zero skill involved and instead just grinding up attributes and skills. I wish there was more to it. I went ahead and started a new game on easy just cus it was so boring, all it really does in decrease the grind required to finish.
