What Video Games have you been playing #13 Now with CGA graphics!

I'm using my old disc copy until it goes on sale and I have a bit of money to spare.

I don't have GOG, both games are on there but they're both $10-20. Google turns up results that for a while, EA was giving away copies of SimCity 2000 for a while but not anymore. It's only $6 now but I don't want to pay it for a game that old. I would sign up for an alert but the chances either game will go on sale anytime soon are pretty slim to nil.

LOL, @Synsensa's phrasing of not wanting to pay that much for nostalgia is spot-on.

Since it's on my wishlist, I can PM you if 3K goes on sale.

Thanks!

I used to have 3000 on disc but I lost it/trashed it years ago and I don't even have a CD-ROM anymore.

If you have Steam, please add Amaraiel to your friends list!

Ok I'll add you (I have the exact same name there).

Haven't been on Steam much lately because I've been playing Borderlands 3 and The Outer Worlds on the Epic Game thing. Love to have 10000 launchers. Also my Epic account was compromised less than one week after I made it. So cool.

My disc copy of SimCity 4 was a pain, though. Since Windows 10 removed support for SuckyROM, I had to resort to getting a...modified executable (which is a minefield of its own). Unfortunately, this results in the Network Addon Mod refusing to install when it detects it. :gripe:

I think I did have to get a modified executable for 3K, too. Thankfully no mods.

Thanks!

Getting a free GoG account and building your own wishlist so you can be notified by e-mail directly isn't very complicated or compromising. GoG isn't an invasive storefront using your own hardware against you without paying you for the opportunity like that-which-shall-not-be-named-but-emits-from-fresh-piles-of-manure.

The frequency of sales on GoG is stuff of legend. You wouldn't have to wait long for at least 50% off, and 70, 80, 90% aren't uncommon.

Just set up an account and stick stuff on your wishlist and they'll email you with surprising regularity. They've got a Halloween sale running right now.

And (I think) a weekly sale, a weekend sale, and a publisher's sale.

As I said to a friend earlier today, I'm mostly immune to GOG sales these days, not because I've learnt how to resist buying cheap games that I'm never going to play, but rather because I've already done that many, many times and now have almost all the games I could ever even pretend to want.

Arakhor or anybody else, if you ever find a game called Tankkk made in Finland in the late '90s (referenced in an archived HotU page but not available in the site) drop me a line.

Is Tankkk a white-supremacist Takh?

Hmmm? No. Far simpler and brainless: you have a tank and you fight other tanks. Boom!

The reason I'm not really satisfied with SimCity DS is that they stripped out a ton of content and more importantly, removed most of the replay options.

On the content side, while they're re-using assets from the 3000 game, they removed parts like underground tubes, terrain elevation and even plumbing networks. There are more interactions with the citizens that are also a lot less meaningful and 10x more annoying than in 3000. In 3000, citizens could ask for policy changes that would have real impacts on the city and bottom line. Now, they just ask for stuff every 30 seconds and whether you do the thing or not has no changes on the gameplay whatsoever. They're just an annoying hassle and they obscure the actual important interactions (like trade deals - which are also stripped down) because you don't know beforehand who is pestering you with a notification until you click on it.

That's all a bummer but I could live without all that. The real pisser is that there is no real free play mode. There kind of is, but the game comes with 16 pre-set maps that you can't change or customize at all. Even that would be fine, except each map is tied to a specific amount of starting funds - so I can't play on the cool islands map with anything less than hardcore difficulty ($10,000 start-up funds) or on the easy map with anything less than cakewalk ($100,000 funds) difficulty. It's very frustrating. You also can only have one city going at a time which is another level of stupid. There are some scenarios included with the game but I've never cared for pre-built scenarios in these games so all that content is basically lost to me.

So now I'm getting my fix watching Let's Plays and jamming to the amazing 3000 soundtrack on youtube.

I...love video game mods.
