Go for it! Carpe diem!

You may remember my rant about all the DLC that vox populi requires --- but I found the Complete collection on Amazon for $12 so screw it, I'm playing Vox Populi and it's great. No bug so far --- newest release was Nov 6

Right. Skyrim VR impressions. Probably going to be a random splurge of observations, so forgive me.

Initially I was a bit disappointed with it, but in hindsight I think it was mainly due to unfamiliar controls so even just moving around was a chore. I initially started off using the pad just for some familiarity in the beginning part, but then I couldn't work out how to switch to the move controllers. I got it going by restarting the game in the end, but maybe there's a better way. Then I spent some time messing around with the various options for the move controllers. It took a while to start to feel intuitive, but after about 4 hours (yes I played it that long) it felt pretty natural and not very restrictive.

As I said before, I've only really used the PSVR sitting down before, so to stand up I had to raise the camera up to about head height and angle it down a little bit. That worked pretty well, but the movement range is still nothing like a Vive and the tracking is a bit wobbly if you get too far from the camera. I tried just sitting down on the ground a couple of times to enjoy the view by a river, but if you move down to that degree it seems to reset the view so you're back up at standing height again, even though you're sat down. Then if you stand up again you're about 10 feet tall and it doesn't switch back. Also the move controllers have a habit of getting a bit misaligned and not moving in sync with your hands, which is annoying too. Seems to happen more when you're further from the camera. The only other negative is I think due to a fault in my move controllers, as the weapons keep drawing on their own every 10 or 20 seconds, which was incredibly annoying. I might just have buy some new ones.

So yes, all in all it's a bit of a headache to begin with and a bit frustrating, but once you push through the initial frustrations and learn what you can and can't do, and the limits of movement, it gets a lot better. Archery is every bit as awesome as you'd hope it would be, and if anything it's easier and more intuitive than it is with the pad. I was expecting sword play to be a bit weird and unconvincing given that you don't feel the weight of a weapon in your hand, or the impact from hitting anything, but in practice it's actually a lot of fun and works well. And doing a shield bash by actually doing a shield bash is awesome. Haven't quite worked out how to block with a two-handed sword yet, and it feels a bit odd wielding that one-handed anyway, so I might give those a miss. As a card-carrying arachnophobe, I'm happy to report that frostbite spider encounters aren't as traumatising as I feared they might be.

Graphically, I'd say it's probably about on par with the PS3 version, and maybe not even quite as good as that in some areas. And also the resolution of the headset makes things a little bit blurry all the time. But the feeling of immersion is really good and brings it all to life in a whole new way. Everything looks a little bigger "in the flesh" than it seemed to before. Skeevers are as big as dogs! So far I've only hung around Riverwood and done the Bleak Falls Barrow mission, but it felt pretty epic. The outside area of Bleak Falls Barrow feels really huge, and there are some areas inside it which are pretty stunning to see in 3D.

But yeah, I ended up playing it for about 4 hours straight, or even a little longer, stood up the whole time. And now my knees are killing me.

Oh a couple of things I forgot to mention - as there's no 3rd person view, it doesn't seem like it's possible to ever see your character after the initial character creation part, which kind of renders it pretty useless. Also it's annoying to not be able to see what items or armour you've got equipped at a glance. And also I found that the animations for things like chopping firewood are not there, and so it pretty much happens instantaneously. So that's a very quick way to make hundreds of gold the first time you're in Riverwood.

The blurry graphics are likely a result of the headset getting misaligned with your eyes. Try adjusting it some more and tightening the strap. The one time I tried a Vive I did not bother to properly secure the headset and things got blurry every few seconds. That got tiresome really fast.

Yeah that is an issue, and unfortunately the PSVR isn't as easy to adjust as the Vive is either, but actually I just meant it's blurry because of the low resolution of the display. I think it's 960 x 1080 (per eye) which sounds pretty good, but remember that's spread over pretty much your entire field of view, so it's not actually that much.

Seems to be approximately on par with other general impressions on this game. Generally favorable but not without issues. I hope they keep tinkering with it and release some patches improving things.

I'll need to get my hand on this eventually but I can wait a little longer methinks.

If only the guards of Skyrim would repeatedly offer some kind of warning that prolonged adventuring could lead to some type of knee issue!!

I used to make knee jokes until i got a coffee mug to the head.

Just about every game on my Steam wishlist is on sale right now. This could be bad for my bank account...

Only buy the ones you're actually going to play, otherwise you end up perpetuating the near-monopoly that is Steam.

Yeah, we wouldn't want to draw attention away from other platforms that are as equally convenient as Steam and just as cheap like, uh, ehm... y'see... uh...

That's just it, I only put ones on there that I actually want to play but don't want to purchase immediately for whatever reason.

GOG is very convenient and has hundreds of cheap games, without any DRM. I have many, many more games there than I do at Steam.

Mankind Divided, Dihonored 2, Shadow Tactics, Banner Saga 2...
Gods help me ! I have neither the time nor the disc space for all of this and I still haven't finished Blood and Wine and Divnity: Original Sin 2, and I'm in the middle of a Civ 6 and Xcom 2 campaign.
Probably for the best if I pass and get them during next year's sale.
Oh, wait. Next year I'll probably be busy with Cyberpunk 2077 and the Civ 6 expansion.

OK, new new years resolution: win the lottery and have enough time and money to only play games for a year or two.

Needing a phone and going to the dentist has saved me from this Steam sale, thankfully.

same, but not by terribly much off, and I'm thinking I should just try to finish what I have before I buy much new
If it's on sale now, it'll probably come on sale again later

I just made an account on GOG right now, and it already seems better than steam
It seems less clogged, and even have like slightly lower prices lol

the problem I'm having is the with the whole liscensing vs ownership thing makes me want to like get all the games I have on Steam already on gog as well, which is a terrible thing to do

If you have the money and don't mind not having it, go for it. :)

It's not very practical, but I much prefer to have games on GOG than on Steam.

This however is much better advice and I would highly recommend it.
