What videogames have you been playing? version 1.22: What's with that plural?

Path of Exile's Exilecon happens Saturday-Sunday in Auckland. The long awaited POE2 expansion will be revealed with beta info and details on improvements/changes to the current game. Streaming of the event begins at 4:30 Friday afternoon for me in MDT zone.

I think the last time I played FM was the 2010 or 2012 edition. It was a little overwhelming.

Nice! My first crack at this game was.. well.. technically it was a version of Championship Manager, which is what this game used to be called, back in the day. This was back in the 1990s, my friend discovered this game and this is basically how we learned about the English football system.. although in those days you could only play in the Championship (division 2), at least from what I remember. The Premier League existed at this time IIRC, but I guess the game didn't have rights to it yet.. from what I remember anyhow.

I was going to say that my first crack at this game was FM2011.. but then remembered about the 90s version.

The game is a LOT more involved now, compared to the 2011 version. It's a lot more realistic and there is a much larger emphasis on lockerroom balance/dynamics. If your lockerroom happiness goes down, your team can easily start losing game after game after game.. It took me a while to get used to it. It's also a lot harder to continue getting promoted every single season, rising from the bottom to the top. I'm sure it's still possible if you are good at tweaking tactics and if you set up your training regiment fully, and follow the other FM tips experienced players follow.. I'm much more of a casual player though, I basically try to figure everything out on my own. I don't like figuring out what the game has modelled poorly so that I can exploit it. I prefer to imagine that this is an actual football club I'm managing and that there is no way to really cheat (aside from reloading after a team talk goes poorly)

Either way, if you tried out FM2023, it would likely feel even more overwhelming. There is just a lot more going on, from what I remember of FM2011 anyhow. But overall I find the game more accessible even maybe.. The UI has improved and it seems you could just jump into it, if you are new to the series (or haven't played in forever), pick a big club (like Barca, Man City, or whatever) and learn the ropes that way. There is a lot more to do, but it's sort of organized better.

I used to play a lot of FM. From 07-13 I had 200+ hours in each. But since then I found myself playing less and less each year until I stopped with 17 or 18 (I forget which off the top of my head).

You don't have to say either way, whether you're married or not.. but.. if you are, your wife would likely pay the price if you were still playing this game on a regular basis. It's sort of known as the marriage destroyer. Also likely relationship destroyer. Maybe you're immune to the effect if you managed to stop playing though :) For me.. I sometimes play this game non-stop every single day for days.. then I take a 2-3 long week break. Then I jump right back in. If I had a wife she'd probably complain at some point or other.

One has to wonder if a game which updates each year, has save longevity. Even if saves from previous versions can be kept, the rosters would change.

From my experience (and from what I've seen on the forums/reddit), the dynamics here are a bit different compared to something like FIFA23. By that I mean that.. Once an experienced/hardcore/dedicated player starts a save, that save can last quite a while. You will forge relationships with the players you sign and they essentially become real to you. A new version coming out will tend to not sway you, you will usually not want to abandon that save just to get the new version w/ the new features and updated squads. You'll sort of peek over occasionally to see what's new in the new version, but whatever save you have going is usually going to draw you in a lot more.

Saves are finally going to be transfearable between versions, which is amazing. Unfortunately this will not apply to the current version :( There are mods or tools you can get that will do this for you, and transfer your save.. or at least this used to exist for some versions.. but.. I'm probably personally going to stick to FM2022 until I am finished with this save - meaning that my manager self (in the game) checks off all the things I wanted to accomplish as a manager. Once that's done I might very well buy FM2023 or 2024, or whatever the current versions ends up being whenever I finish with my current save. But hey, I might be wrong about how others approach this game. It just seems to me that those who play this game often, prefer long-lasting saves

The baseball version of FM - Out of the Park - lets you play from any start date, going back to the 19th Century. I'm not sure football/soccer fans are as into the history of their game as baseball fans are.

Oh that actually sounds pretty damn cool! I personally don't really care about the year the game is set in. I actually prefer playing in the future, where all known players have retired and are now coaches or managers.. I love my regens! There's just something about taking a 15 year old and nurturing him over a decade to become a world class player, playing at the highest level.

Having said that, if FM allowed me to manage historical teams, like the 1970s Polish teams that were so good, or some South American club even, maybe where Maradona played.. That would be fun, I'd get into that a bit! Heck, managing a team in one of the very old world cups would be cool too. I guess the thing is that it takes them long enough to assemble the database of players for the current year. Football is a global sport and there's so many diff leagues that it's probably a lot of work. Compiling historical data would be overkill.. but.. maybe they'll do it eventually?

Recently I discovered (duh) that the best dedicated strategy in Victoria II (well, some mod of it) as Greece, is to just build a few more medium warships (and transports) and declare war on Two Sicilies. You actually have the navy to defeat them (and then blockade), and also possess a god-tier admiral in the start of the game. Your army can hold them back, due to terrain in Sicily (mountain), so ultimately, less than a year after the game starts, they will give you the province of Sicily.
Which is great, for three reasons:
-it creates tons of money (due to sulphur)
-population is relatively small, so your tech research won't take a massive hit (unlike what happens if you go for some african territory)
-you need to prevent Italy from forming anyway, so taking over (at least) the Magna Graecia provinces is absolutely required.

The game is very easy now, since with your lucrative sulphur trade you can construct a larger navy than the OE and either in a crisis war or on your own defeat them. Even if the crisis doesn't lead to war, you still get one province and are in a great position to defeat them yourself during the oriental crisis.

I discovered this in a game last week, but of course then erased the save since I need to first complete my new seminar :p

Still absorbed by Stardew Valley, and am halfway through year 2. The farm is prospering -- I now have three huge fields, a fruit orchard, all kinds of sappers, chickens, cows, and a horse, and have completed most of the community center, save the bulletin board. Love the horse. If my character were real, he'd be such a strange figure -- someone who, on every rainy day, can be spotted climbing the mountains with a pickaxe and a backpack full of spaghetti -- and who has the strange habit of galloping around giving townsfolk pizza, then galloping off without ever saying a word. Right now I have two large fields devoted to cash crops (blueberries, this season), one large field I use for needs/crafts/etc, and a couple of smaller areas that are strictly special use. I have flower beds around my beehives, for instance, and in the spring I had strips along the river for rice. Right now I'm waiting for Robin to finish my expanded coop so I can put her to work expanding my barn. I want wool and duck eggs!

The Long Dark: Tales from the Far Territory

Stalker, Day 230. Timberwolf Mountain. Just hanging around and grinding my skills towards the Skilled Survivor achievement. Nothing much to report, except that I've officially crossed the line into My Longest Run Ever. My previous longest run was unfortunately lost to the mists of time, somewhere among all the updates and game resets. But I know that it was 220-something days long. So 230 days is officially my longest run.

CustomInterStalker, Day 5. Coastal Highway. 5F/-15C at dawn. Nothing much to report here either, but for those who've actually played the game I wanted to share some screenshots of the new & improved "beachcombing." That's a lot of good stuff. The backpack was empty, but I got a wool toque out of the sea chest. I wonder if the stuff that washes up on the shore is one of the 'hidden' settings when you do a Custom game. That is, I wonder if this is Stalker-level beachcombing or Interloper-level beachcombing. I'm assuming it's the former, with the hatchet there, but even if Interloper beachcoming looks like this but without the hatchet, it'd still be a goldmine for gear, especially early in the game. A hat, a fish, a fishing hook, a scrap of leather, a cut birch sapling and a cut maple sapling. That really raises the value of spawning on one of the coastal regions on Interloper, or of heading to one immediately if you spawn inland.

I don't have a gaming PC atm and can only play on my phone.
Mostly Stardew Valley. Touch screen actually works better than mouse and keyboard.

I have also been playing Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution 2 and Chrono Trigger on my android. I've played CT before but there's new content on the google app.

I've been playing a 2017 game called Prey. I like it. It kind of reminds me of System Shock 2, but newer graphics and less wandering around in circles lost while all your weapons break down.

I prefer PC, but the auto-attack feature on the mobile versions is nice. Speaking of....last night I finished year 2 with 200K in the bank, the millionaire achievement, AND THE COMMUNITY CENTER FINISHED. I went to bed at 1 am like a proper farmer. Year 2 was a really good year. I started it wanting to get a stable, a coop, and hopefully a barn. I finished it with a stable, an maxed out coop, a maxed out barn, a mill, and the greenhouse -- so I was making blueberry wine and strawberry preserves all winter.

The Long Dark: Tales from the Far Territory

CustomInterStalker (3rd attempt), Day 6. Coastal Highway. Eaten by wolves in a heavy fog.

CustomInterStalker (4th attempt), Day 18. Same settings as before. I briefly pondered selecting different Feats this time, but ended up taking Cold Fusion and Efficient Machine, like I always do. I spawned on Transfer Pass again, but unlike last time it was Noon instead of Midnight. I decided to be a moron and headed for Forsaken Airfield.

Yikes. If you're looking for a challenge, that place is friggin' nasty with Interloper weather settings. I spent 9 days there before throwing in the towel and heading back to Lower Great Bear with my tail between my legs. I repaired and reactivated the main radio transmitter at the airfield before I left, so I'll be able to start Signal Void whenever I'm ready for it.

I couldn't find a bedroll for 16 days, which is what killed me in my first attempt at CustomInterStalker. I checked most of Forsaken Airfield, most of Broken Railroad, and the Poacher's Camp in Forlorn Muskeg, and didn't find a bedroll until I reached the Camp Office at Mystery Lake. I think one wrinkle with using Custom Stalker with Interloper loot settings is that you don't get the Interloper loot tables, you just get random gear, but with the reduced spawn rates of Interloper. So you risk a random scarcity of some items. In this case, bedrolls. In that one respect, my CustomInterStalker settings might be tougher than straight Interloper. I thought I might have to go on my Kuutaamia* with my level-1 Archery skill and the 3 arrows I've found, so I could make a bearskin bedroll by hand. Which is kinda cool, actually. I was just starting to psych myself up to do it when I found the bedroll in the lodge. Can you kill a bear with 3 arrows? Yes. Technically, you can kill a bear with 1 arrow. Just have to shoot him in the eye. Easy-peasy. If it bleeds, you can kill it.

* "To hunt something that's hunting you." The warrior's final test, ostensibly in the Comanche language, from the movie Prey (2022). Which you should see, if you haven't yet.

Been playing more RDR2, last night I discovered the main hideout for the Lemoyne Raiders, a gang of confederate veterans and Sovereign Citizens. Got killed on the first try at clearing it out, so on the second try I circled around to the back where there is a bit more cover among the outbuildings, and was able to kill everyone pretty easily.

I also caught the white Arabian horse, the best horse breed in the game, that can be found in the snowy area in the northwest corner of the map.

Ahh, Shady Grove! Which chapter are you in? I cleared it once with a Lancaster repeater. There's a lot of oleander growing around there if you like using poison arrows. Nice job on the white Arabian -- she's hard to break.

Shady Belle*

I'm in the middle of chapter 2 still, mostly just doing free-roam, a lot of finding stuff to do while waiting for the three main gang hideouts (Beaver Hollow, the O'Driscoll ranch place, and Shady Belle) to respawn enemies.

Really enjoy killing the demobbed Confederates, only thing more fun is lassoing Klansmen and dropping them onto campfires.

Playing Satisfactory right now. Started a new save.

I really really hate stingers. I used to play horror games, but nothing gets me more on edge than frogging Satisfactory stingers.

You'd think I'd remember that considering the raiders attack the player for "taking the Belle". Have you encountered that one guy camping in the boonies who still thinks the war is going on?

I don't think so, I've had a few random encounters with them, usually they're shaking down travellers but they've also ambushed me on the covered bridge a couple of times. And I've run into at least one minor camp out in the wilderness.

I tried Sims 4 for maybe forty minutes. Now I just want to play Sims 2 again.

This is one guy by himself who isn't violent. I can't remember the location, but it's not on a road: I nearly ran over him while doing the "Roads? We don't need no steenkin roads!" navigation overland. Between Snakehead Landing and the Murfree brood territory, I think.

It has its virtues -- the easy camera, CAS, the appearance of the sims, etc, but I can appreciate that. Hoping Life by You and Paralives forces EA up its game. They know full well now thanks to Cities Skylines that it doesn't matter how deeply rooted a brand is, it can still implode.

There's a game called Founders' Fortune that's sort of like Sims, but colony survival. I haven't played it much but enjoyed the parts I did.

Elden ring pure caster re-run continues. Getting to the point where anything mistimed or not prepared for is pretty much instagib. Still a much stronger build than the first one. Akka is nuts for refusing to summon npcs, but 2 bonus cool points for it having happened.

Almost included a pic of my favorite random enemy npc in the whole game, but deciding against it. Flutebro is just too unexpectedly epic to visually teaser.
