What would the world be like if Al Gore won in 2000?

No war in Iraq, probably not a war in Afghanistan either. I'm guessing Gore would have responded to 9/11 with a mere speech or some air-strikes against Taliban and Al-Qaeda camps or something of that nature.

No. The invasion of Afghanistan would have happened. The difference would be that it would have retained the focus of the government without a distraction like Iraq. As such, it'd probably not be the mess it is now.

We probably wouldn't even be there. From what I remember, we were soooooo close to victory then we abandoned it for Iraq. (but I was seven )

Every last one of you guys is forgetting: the REPUBLICANS controlled Congress from 2000 to 2006. Therefore President Gore wouldn't have been able to do a single damn thing. No environmental legislation; no education reform; no health care reform. The BP oil spill? All Gore's actions against BP would have been blocked. Banking and mortgage crisis? Still would have happened because McCain was just about the only guy in Congress who did advocate banking/mortgage regulation, and Gore would have vetoed his ass. True, we wouldn't be in Iraq and we probably wouldn't have been in Afghanistan. So your choice, folks, would have been ONE of the following:

Spoiler :
Environmental legislation
Education reform
Health care reform
A serious ass-kicking on British Petroleum
Banking/mortgage regulation

Spoiler :
No war in Iraq
No war in Afghanistan

You can have the contents of ONE of those spoilers, and ONLY ONE. Which one?
Tough choice, ain't it?

Edit: Whoops, forgot to give my answer to the OP question. With President Gore, we would have been worse off, by a lot: no reforms of any kind, the Taliban would still be in power, and Saddam Hussein would still be in power.

Meh. The government would continue to do its usual mix of mind-numbingly stupid and mediocre things in domestic affairs, continue to be awesome as all hell overseas, and I would continue to not really care about either.

As usual, this thread is lolsomely partisan in a way most WI threads usually aren't before the twentieth century.

We wouldnt have had the pleasure of knowing bush's many public speaking mistakes. The guy could be a comedian if he wanted too. :D

Heres one i found: "I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully."[11] — Saginaw, Michigan; September 29, 2000

Every President makes gaffes. Gore wouldnt have been any different. A few Al Gore classics for ya:

HILARIOUS AL GORE BLUNDERS AND BLOOMERS

"I am not part of the problem. I am a Democrat."
-- Vice President Al Gore

"A low voter turnout is an indication of fewer people going to the polls."
-- Vice President Al Gore

"Illegitimacy is something we should talk about in terms of not having it."
-- Vice President Al Gore, 5/20/996

"Democrats understand the importance of bondage between a mother and child."
-- Vice President Al Gore

"Welcome to President Clinton, Mrs. Clinton, and my fellow astronauts."
-- Vice President Al Gore

"Mars is essentially in the same orbit... Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, which is very important. We have seen pictures where there are canals, we believe, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. If oxygen, that means we can breathe."
-- Vice President Al Gore

"What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is."
-- Vice President Al Gore

"People that are really very weird can get into sensitive positions and have tremendous impact on history."
-- Vice President Al Gore
(Ed note. Hmmmm, anyone in particular come to mind?)

"When I have been asked who caused the riots and the killing in L.A., my answer has been direct and simple: Who is to blame for the riots? The rioters are to blame. Who is to blame for the killings? The killers are to blame."
-- Al Gore

"The American people would not want to know of any misquotes that Al Gore may or may not make."
-- Vice President Al Gore

Its not that Bush just made gaffes. He made tons of really stupid ones all the time with broken english. It was normal for him. I can understand with the public spotlight on a president, especially when hes speaking but you do understand bush made more gaffes then normal? Check out the websites dedicated to them if you want to understand the extent of what he said.

And as a direct result of that large number of gaffes, you will remember him your whole life.

I've seen a lot of people say they would rather be remembered badly than not remembered at all (a common line among schoolchildren who shoot their classmates). Did you ever wonder if maybe Bush did some or most of those gaffes intentionally....? :)

What good is it to be remembered if you are reviled for what you did? Why reason it is better to be reviled then forgotten and not hated by most?

Of course the better question is if you cant choose to be widely liked and still be alive then why does it matter if you are reviled and hated or forgotten after your death? You will be dead anyway.

I certainly wouldn't like to be reviled and remembered while I am still alive as I am very sensitive to what other people think about me. Maybe a bit too much.

I think Bush doesn't care what the majority of people think of him since he doesn't seem to make a big effort to improve his image. Look at his recent book. It is full of misinformation and it got bad publicity because of it. He is sure off to a bad start in his post-presidential career if he wants people to think of him differently.

I choose Spoiler A.

Bush's book is fine. Just Bushy...

Why would one be reviled for saying some gaffes?

Do people really have no sense of humor at all?

I think Bush doesn't care what the majority of people think of him since he doesn't seem to make a big effort to improve his image. Look at his recent book.

Actually, your're quite wrong. In fact, in a recent interview, he commented that one of the things that affected him most during his Presidency was Kanye Wests claim that he hated black people.

It is full of misinformation and it got bad publicity because of it.

Not my impression and it continues to be on the best seller list.

He is sure off to a bad start in his post-presidential career if he wants people to think of him differently.

Actually, his popularity is up quite a bit compared to his last few years in office.

A top Democratic pollster in Washington is circulating a poll showing Bush's popularity in key contested congressional districts is now 6 points ahead of Obama's.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/144350/Book-Tour-Begins-George-Bush-Favorable-Rating.aspx

Like I said, his numbers are currently comparable to Obamas. Obamas approval/disapproval split is 47-50 and Bush's is currently 44-53. Not a lot of difference to be honest.

What good is it to be remembered if you are reviled for what you did?
For some people, the desire is simply to be remembered at all.

Why reason it is better to be reviled then forgotten and not hated by most?
I have no freaking idea. I have no clue as to why they reason that way; I simply know that some people reason that way. How do I know? Because I've seen people say they reason that way.

YIKES
If you got pregnant right now, would you keep the baby?
I'd put it up for adoption. I can't look after myself let alone a baby.

Would you rather be remembered for something bad or forgotten?
For something bad because at least then I'm remembered.

Would you date someone twice your age for money?
Never.

(The above is a recent example; the first time I saw someone say that was around fifteen years ago--a criminal case where a 14-year-old kid murdered his sister)

Everybody would be dead from mercury poisoning because of the CFL bulbs the government made us purchase.

If we'd had two terms of Gore, the campaign slogan for the Republicans in 2008 would have been: "You Betcha we can!".

Fluffy bunnies and smiling babies, of course.

Well let's see. 9/11 would still have happened, and there would probably have still been a response to it. Maybe only Afghanistan. More progress probably would've been made on climate change, but not a great deal more; politics would still get in the way. Gore probably would've beaten McCain in 2004, and Liebermann would've been dropped as VP over his opposition to Gore's attempts at healthcare reform. The financial crisis would probably still have occurred, but the Dems would get blamed for it instead of the GOP.
