Yeah, I was thinking like seaman/airman... TBH I don't see why it needs to be latin or greek in origin! We speak English now, so two English words tacked together seems fine.

Spaceman makes most sense to me. Man + space = spaceman

Especially the US space programme is obsessed with Greek mythology - Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, now the Orion... I am surprised they didn't give a Greek name to the Space Shuttle programme.

The au in English makes the Russian а sound (roughly). But yes, there is actually a v (&#1074 there, not an f(&#1092. The two paired consonants are hard to tell apart in speech sometimes.

I was refering to the general principle of "not too foreign". Pronouncing the v or f makes the foreign origin too obvious, which substracts from the attractiveness of the word. The K on other hand, just makes the word look cool.
