Does your definition have to do with the number of people or the activities?

Please note I did not put this in questions not worth their own thread because there are a lot of nuances that can be argued for or against, not really a simple answer.

I am staying with my mom until I leave for school at the end of the month. On new years eve I asked her if I could have a kickback while they were out celebrating somewhere else.

She said "Sure, no party though, just a kickback"

So I had 15 or so friends come over, did the regular things BBQed, drank - played some flip up, danced/ played some music loud, I DJed :goodjob: (obviously the neighbors were cool with it beind new year and all)

When my mom got home with my uncles/aunts/older cousins/step dad etc she pretended to flip out "WTH this is a party, the music is blaring, there are bottles all over the place!, and what is this? Drinking games!!!!!"

Then they all proceeded to drink/dance as well, because they are old yet still cool ;)

And it got me thinking, what exactly is the difference between a kickback and a party?

^ That is the thread topic, to be clear.

Here is my opinion:

1. There has to be at least 1 female for every guy there, single or not. It just helps the yin-yang of the situation. To many drunk guys and too few women usually results in an unnecessary amount of arm wrestling and or drunken LAN party.

2. Dancing - if there is no dancing it is not a party. (Note this may only apply to Latinos)

3. *Amount of booze - A poorly stocked party is no party at all.

4. Amount of people - I can't be arsed to put an exact number here, but can you honesty call 10 people a party? Of course not.

* I am not joking when I say this: I've had some pretty cool after school (when we had half days) lawn dart and *tea parties. We may or may not have smoked some blunts, play lawn darts/ flag football soccer (real football) etc And it was a good time, but twas no party.

* Yeah that sound strange, but my tea is teh bomb, trust me.

1. What the hell is a kickback?
2. 15 people, music, and drinking, is a party
3. It depends

a get-together consisting of close friends, partying and drinking.

We're having a kickback at Trent's house for the homecoming alumni.

always hosted at an individual's house, a kickback consists of friends getting together to engage in party activities such as drinking etc., without the hassle and drawbacks of a big party. although an invite verbal or otherwise is not necessary it is understood that a kickback is friends only and is not to exceed 20 or 30 persons. a good option for those not wishing to get their house trashed. not to be confused with a party or rager.

You guys should cruise Matt's house on Saturday cuz hes gonna have a kickback.

Those seem acceptable I guess.

A kickback sounds like a party to me - albeit a small one.

A "gathering" is what I would call something that is pre-party-like. If you're having 3 people over, you're playing cards, having some drinks, maybe watching tv - that's a gathering. If you have 10 people over, you're drinking, there's music playing, someone's nailing Emily upstairs - that's a party.

If a kickback consists of partying, then it's already a party and your question is rendered stupid.

I said they were acceptable, not perfect definitions.

Besides it is not as if the word is in any real dictionaries - hence this thread.

Dad: Where were you all day?
Me: At a party.
Dad: did anyone get laid?
Me: Naw.
Dad: Twas no party my boy.

 I can imagine that conversation taking place.

...get better parents?

If you and your friends decide that it was a party, then it was a party.

This is my rule for when a party is about to commence...

For me, a "kickback" is something you do with the buddies, AKA a sausage fest. Smoke some weed, drink some beers, play some video games, have a laugh with the boys.

It becomes a "party" when you add women and lots more alcohol. :D

Can you adopt me as a brother if he says that?
