You missed the point, it was a hypothetical according to which The Scream had indeed first appeared as a rpg game card. Would it be less artistic in that case? ;)

And what if it was pixel art? Still would it be any less artistic, and why?

I'm kind of curious as to why he didn't pick an impressionist or modern painter, given both the video game and Da Vinci as a painter are replicating things in the world [as they see them] with some medium.

Also 3d making software has brought a revolution in "naturalistic" looking gfx. So in the near future i expect realistic images to be produced very easily.

Which is why i said that they are less artistic in my view, since they lack emotion, which often in art is expressed through meaningfull distortion.

That's a pretty narrow take on it. Looking back at Renaissance art, there was an attempt to more fully simulate or record the real world vs. the traditional Medieval bible scenes.

Why go back just to rennaissance though? In ancient Greek art the attempt to present perfectly the real form had been achieved. You would have thought that after it the statues (for example) would be all produced in such a way, but in fact distortion came after the realization of perfect realism.

In painting it is the same, not all great expressionist painters were unable to produce natural realistic forms. They commanded realism to some degree, but poured distortion so as to achieve a new height in the art :)

I was just picking one example, and one that might have been more relevant for west Europeans than the Greeks.

I took your post to mean you you would argue that either Renaissance paintings or Classical sculptures wouldn't be considered art since they strove for "perfect realism" (I'll use the term despite my reservations about it to keep the argument simple). If not, then we don't have a conflict.

That's great and all... but what does that castle mean?
I means, it represents a castle...

That's it.
What do Fallingwater, the Unité d'Habitation or the Farnsworth House "mean"? Yet they are undeniably examples of art.

If it has lyrics, and only if you have the desire to get the full meaning of it...
But, no, music doesn't always obviously.

Have to make sure you understood the point of my link, though, in case you didn't know about these guys: The singer is actually not singing in any language in that song. It's just random words without meaning. He improvises each time he sings it. (Although the ultimate expression is often similar.) It's still true and meaningful to the listener regardless of his understanding of the chosen language... :) They're well-known, so I actually assume you know about them, but still...

Well, good luck with your video game career... I'm sure the best video game "artists" will be remembered for centuries to come.

Oh, look, you're putting even more words in my mouth. You need to break this habit, dude.

When did I say I was going to go into the gaming industry?

Since when is something only art when the artist is remembered for centuries?
I mean, currently there is an exposition at the institution I work for. The art that is shown there is truly amazing and I love it but I doubt the artists will be remembered for centuries to come.

Because people know all about Glykon the Athenian, right?

That's a remarkably large time frame to start being a hipster.
