Regarding Rome, does Trajan make sense for 'big personalities'? From the sound of things, he will play differently to Julius or Augustus would, with a balanced focus on conquest and administration, but is he really a bigger personality than Julius? It seems to me their claim to want all of 'the biggest personalities' was their way of saying they wanted each of their leaders to have a unique agenda, and distinct personality (which is not the same).

Well, Julius and Augustus have been in enough Civ games already. Picking the same leader every time is only excusable for civs which really have had only one famous leader, and that certainly doesn't apply to Rome.

(Anyway, if it was just personalities that decided Firaxis's choice, we'd have Nero or even Caligula...)

The Five Good Emperors (of which Trajan is one) deserve to be represented in the game. This was a period of relative stability for the Roman empire. Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius would have been interesting choices as well. I also wouldn't have minded Vespasian, Septimius Severus, Diocletian or Constantine.

Rome has many famous leaders, but Julius Caesar I'm fairly sure is by far it's most famous. Still, What you say is true, which is why I very much hope Isabella of Castille is not in Civ VI vanilla; and in fact she likely isn't even near being Spain's most famous leader, people playing these games just assume she is because she's been in nearly every one.

Gandhi is clearly by far the best known figure from his country, but if we can remove Genghis, Julius (who was not included in Civ 5 either), Darius, etc, then surely we can remove him.

No, what they actually want is not personality but to sell already like leaders that were present in previous games as DLC in the future. They only added enough of "trademark" civ leaders like Gandhi/Montezuma so as not to annoy too many people and to have something recognisable, but I bet we'll get Julius/Augustus as DLC.

A Trajan wouldn't sell well as a DLC - but Augustus or Julius? Sure. Same with the likes of Ramesses/Elizabeth or other civ series veterans. They will be back, but with a price tag.

Looking at the history of barbarossa and his achievements, i tend to assume that he will be a city-state/diplomacy focused leader, with the civ either focusing on great people (e.g. Einstein), diplomacy(HRE) or the obvious tank/blitzkrieg stuff.

While Legions would make sense I don't know about that, they seem to be avoiding having any uniques from previous games.

Some UUs seem to be coming back since Egypt's chariot, Japan's samurai and India's elephant are still there.
Rome without the legions would be very weird.

In civ 4, Rome's UU was the Praetorian.

Basically, Praetorian was a type of experienced Legionary of the Emperor's guard, i think.

Considering tomorrow (August 9th) is the date that Trajan died, my guess is Rome. We have seen Firaxis tie the reveals to major events of the civilizations they have revealed... Brazil with the Olympics, England coming out on the date that Victoria had her coronation).

With Frederick as the leader I expect some sort of knight UU. But it could be that Germany is the last Civ with two UUs. Personally I was hoping for some 18th century infantry but that seems unlikely now that both England and France have musketmen UUs.

I believe it's unlikely for Germans to have Panzers again. More likely Landsknehts or Teutonic Knights. I don't think there are other Germanic units which are as famous.
