Which television shows are you watching? Part III

Ah. We have a difference in criteria then. The original Star Trek (not least the overacting) feels horribly dated to me.

Not a joke. See above. But if you still want to unfriend me… :(
I agree the original show is painful. Also too with the horrific sexism.

But I won't sit here and listen to you say mean things about my beloved Next Generation :gripe:

Spoiler The Mandalorian finale :
The darksaber is in live-action canon now!

Spoiler The Witcher up to Episode 6 :
What in the HELL is with the time hopping without a single mention or sign that it happened? When the hell are things happening? Are we following Geralt in the past? The Yennefer storyline is taking place over years? When the hell is the Ciri story happening? What an absolute joke this is.

TOS is kind of trash. There are some really good episodes in it but I can't watch it and I have tried a few times.

Got through expanse ep 6. waiting to finish before i take on season 2 of Lost in space.
Really waiting for Ozark to see some good acting. ;)

What do you mean trash?

Well, essentially all the criticisms in Galaxy Quest regarding the original series still stand (as you say, the sexism, also the overacting, badly aged special effects, etc.). They are less bad in TNG, so by far, I think (constructive criticism!) the less they are like the original series in respects such as the ones mentioned above the better.

Eeeehh… with all its shortcomings, the best Star Trek series I've watched is Voyager. Or, at least, my favourite.
TNG… unlike the original Star Trek, to me at least, remains watchable. Some episodes are actually good. Some very definitely aren't. Whoopi Goldberg's always a plus, both because of herself and because of how the character is portrayed and written (so far, because I still have at least one season to go).
But still below Voyager.
I'll freely admit that it is a matter of taste at this point, so it's not so much an argument as a difference in opinion here.

I liked TNG a whole lot. It still has one of the finest hours of television ever put to video tape (The episode: The Inner Light). Voyager, in my books, was not better than TNG or DS9, although it was still good in it's own right. I certainly didn't mind staring at Geri Ryan week after week. But all the new stuff is light years away from TOS in terms of quality, acting and special effects.

I don't get the hate for Discovery. I think the biggest gripe about the series for most people is that it doesn't look like TOS. "Oh, it's not canon! I can't watch!" I don't know about that. They are working in elements of the old show into it and the writing has definitely improved from the first season. As far as it being canon, I think they are addressing most of the changes quite well, if you can even notice them. The biggest change is the bridge technology, but they sort of have to do that or it would look so dated that there would be no point watching it. You have to suspend a little of your preconceptions and reliance on TOS to enjoy Discovery but it's well worth it for the most part.

Now, if they could just get rid of Michael Burnham. :p

All culture is derivative, hobbs.
Can't wer all just get along and agree that Takhisis and may are both wrong and Deep Space 9 was the best ?
No, wir kann not because I also tend to like DS9 over the original Star Trek, so you wouldn't be exactly disagreeing with me then. As I was told in fiftychat, ‘you'd better wear fireproof clothing’.

Agreed. Reddit says the plot is a rip-off from some other show or movie or something but I don't care.
Reddit says a lot of erroneous things. I watch and read a lot of sci-fi, especially the older stuff and I hadn't run across the plot prior to first airing. But maybe I missed one. It would be nice if these geniuses on Reddit would name the source it was ripped off from.

They actually did. In this case it's me that's the lazy source-less bum. I don't remember what they cited but they had an example.

TBH I don't really care about where ideas come from. My enjoyment of the idea comes from the iteration I just consumed, and not the iteration it was inspired by.

But people tend to get very uppity about ownership of ideas.

Disney really borked the launch of Disney+. I saw all of The Mandalorian in a single month and, well, there's nothing else to be subbed for. Goodbye subscription.

Maybe by the time it's worth getting again they'll save my subtitle settings and save my watch history. That'd be cool.

I binge-watched Season 1 of the original Magnum P.I. It is wonderful. :goodjob:

So I tracked down the current Magnum. What trash! Torturing witnesses. Bad guys shooting submachine guns and not hitting anything. :shake: Magnum & Higgins are both dull as dishwater. :sleep:Why would anyone watch this?

I can't believe you're going to make me have to defend Disney of all things. :ack: I think they had a great launch. There's more stuff to watch on there than I'd ever have time for. The Mandalorian was certainly a big draw, but hardly the only incentive for my family. At just $5 a month (my sub), it's the best value in streaming out there imo.
