At least they didn't predator drone some civilians instead!
But in that the peace seeking faction of American society should be able to use this symbolic victory to support bringing an end to the war on terror. No, we didn't accomplish something, but we FEEL like we've accomplished something and if anything this will give more congressional support to the drawdown in Afghanistan. When this means that we are no longer nationbuilding in Afghanistan and we can reapportion the extra military budget to domestic nationbuilding it will be a time for truly bombastic celebration, and will probably help Obama pull out the electoral win when our troops are home before the 2012 elections. Unemployment is under 10% now.
Afghanistan for instance, is sure to be cut back severely, reducing budget concerns, and a big reason will be because we FELT like we had accomplished something and could leave with dignity.
Do you want to announce that you're running against the President who killed Osama Bin laden? I can't imagine any of the Republicans want to do that, so their fundraising will be stifled for a couple of months and they will delay announcements, hell, maybe until August. This story plays out in a pretty positive manner if you are willing to ignore the human element.
If you insist upon the importance of the human element then I just want to make sure that we are all talking about the same Osama bin Laden who, even if he did it at Bush's behest, orchestrated the 9/11 hijackings? I am sorry, I just have trouble feeling sorry for him. I don't see how having him out there plotting against America (even if only to protect his own life at this point, even if he wasn't really a Mujahideen but a tool of the Illuminati, at this point he had to be plotting at least to evade capture and also to physically harm those who would attempt such a capture) would be any better than a symbolic victory that I hope can be used to end our ill thought out crusades.
((EDIT: It's called Political Science, not Political Feelings))
