While We Wait: The Next Generation

Yes, but then what about simply posting the story of Denmark in the time span of fourty years, one that will clarify why such a completely illogical act. I already said that a proper timeline would be good and dandy. Just clarify it so that I'd accept my legacy :p

I agree that diplomatic mishmash happens. But normally there's some kind of event that triggers it.

I don't blame Milarqi, he didn't play in the original NES.

So, am I the only one expecting demons to show up in The D.O.O.M. Project NES?

Zombies are a possibility.

I somehow get the feeling this is just scenario one of a series of missions for our DOOM personnel to complete. With that in mind, zombies and demons would make it difficult to have multiple scenarios.

My money is on an apocalypse now type scenario staring either a small militia with a strongman leader, or a rebel Kurtz type Brazilian officer.

Yeah. I was thinking perhaps Dread would lure us in with mysterious mutilations and then BAM! demons. Then the whole DOOM thing would make sense and we'd all look silly for not seeing it earlier.

But I doubt that would happen, as the current set up seems far more interesting than a knock-off of a video game.

I'm hoping for multiple scenarios. Reggie might even get to retire and live happily ever after if we play long enough. Unless he gets himself killed and rots in some fetid jungle backwater. Both are fun endings!

Here's your story.

In 1890 hell froze over and Denmark and Sweden became best friends.

There.

I don't know whether that sarcastic comment was directed at me being ignorant or the problem being a problem? :)

Or anyways, you could merely be joking for the sake of it.

It was a sarcastic comment poking fun at the out-of-characterness to it.

For arcaders and boardgamers everywhere, here's a question for you:

What constitutes a meaningful choice?

Is it when you put a line in your orders and see it mentioned in the update (directly or indirectly, the latter for "secret" orders)? Is it when you see numbers go up and down in addition and in relation to your orders being mentioned in the update? Is it something more?

Blah blah blah blah blah blah. Believe me, this is important, and not just for me!

@flyingchicken, for me its an abstract concept of 'success' (just like ww2 Soviet field marshals), looking beyond the numbers and the update itself.

Having said that, I mostly enjoy just having an effect in the game, and being noteworthy amongst the other people playing, whether I'm doing well or not.

And having said that, I've hardly NESed at all compared to most people here…

@flyingchicken: The "Philosophy of NESing" essay was just about the only piece of Symphony's work that I read all the way through and agreed with, or at least thought was important to NESing in general. Outlining the four corners of the NESing world is an interesting concept... but, I babble.

With regards to meaningful choices, I personally feel most gratified when I see my efforts distilled and published in a world with a dozen other choices made, where they clash and collide. To that effect, for me it's the update which is most important because it demonstrates the core function of NESing, which is telling a story. If this cannot be done then the choices lose meaning because they no longer have a real impact on the world. On the "game," sure, if they show up in the stats, but the stats only tell half the story.

Is NES chat working for anyone tonight?

No, I keep receiving errors. It worked once, but then my enitre computer froze!

Thanks, I'll stop trying.

Lol, no keep on, its probably those damned Trojans. Do your best BirdJaguar!

didn't work for me; gave up

To me it was the chat window in general that didn't work last night.

We'll try again tonight. :)

HOW TO CONNECT TO #NES

1. Download an IRC client like mIRC. Don't worry, even though it says it costs money, it doesn't. It's just nagware. mIRC is recommended, although you can use whatever you want.
2. Connect to "irc.irc-chat.net". This can be done by typing "/server irc.irc-chat.net"
3. Join #nes. "/join #nes".
4. Chat!

It should be working now :)
