I live in Raleigh. My own personal experience is that NC is a nice, fairly progressive and on-the-ball place to live, but Raleigh is the exception to the rule in a state that is still fairly rural and, outside of its cities, overwhelmingly votes Republican. My parents have been here since 1982, or so I recall.

Raleigh seemed nice when I visited it, but granted that was years ago and I didn't stick around in the city too much to see what it was like.
