To hell with the gunpowder age! The era of pointy sticks is where the fascinating stuff (in my lonely opinion) tends to happen :)
All of me knows that the Citadel's knowledge is a beautiful and precious achievement and it would be a terrible blow were it to be lost, yet there exists an insistent portion of me that hopes for its workshops and diagrams (not its literature and histories, but sacrifices must be made) to be destroyed or lost before their pernicious "learning" can spread the foul light of science and knowledge too far, too fast. Out of character only, of course :D

All it takes is a nice barbarians horde to destroy the knowledge and push the world into the dark ages.

I don't care about the history or what not of later starts. That's not truly what appeals to me about them, although an interesting situation can. I care about the technology. Pointy stick gets really old, really fast. Somebody starts (in a way that is not mind-numbingly godawful) a fresh start with modern technology, and fine, I'll participate in that, because there are things I can very easily do that interest me in such a circumstance.

But nobody does. It's always bronze to steel pointy sticks. It gets old incredibly quickly waiting for these Fresh Starts to take the 12 months or whatever to get even 20 - 30 updates in and then they're still nowhere near the time periods I want to want to see. Seeing gunpowder is a breath of fresh air and an incredibly rare achivement. Most of them die long before then. So yes, Fresh Start has its advantages. But it has serious drawbacks too. And people touting it like it's god's gift to NESing and the one true path does nothing but irritate me because it tends to screw me out of enjoying it unless I want to wait a year or two, should I not be struck by some measure of inspiration. Yes, it does boil down to me, me, me. I know the only way I will ever see some of the NESes I really want to play is if I run them myself, and that does me little good in terms of playing them, does it?

And there, I've gone and failed at my promise, but I'm calling it like I see it. Homogeneity bad. NES genre racism bad. Diversity good.

The tech considerations are utterly secondary. In a fresh start, you can create the nation you want to create, and ultimately, that is what appeals to me, not the wargaming that modern day NESes inevitably are. Take das' NESes for example. Don't get me wrong, I like das and his NESes, but in the long run they always boil down to an absurdly long wargame (helped along by the fact that we've never had a peaceful IT). Now that's what people expect from a modern NES, so for better or worse, it is essentially only a matter of time before most every nation is fighting a war, and real nation building almost never happens.

Oh, please do! I really want to get off this stupid, warring continent!

I'm surprised no one's invaded me yet, actually.

Well giving out iron to all the bloody people- (ARGH!)- on the continent doesn't make you alot of powerful friends (well, if you exclude those you gave the iron to ;]). If it wasn't for Gorin you'd bet testing some dangerous currents, my friend.

You think I'm joking, don't you?

:p

Your existence still serves a purpose.

Heh, I feel your pain Symph. I keep trying to kill off my nes, but my players won't allow me ;) Now it's about to enter IT3.

I'd love to do an AltHis. I have a few ideas in my head to try. Would also love to do something on the Dune universe with Great Houses, but I must admit I'm not sure how to do this in order to make it really interesting.

Right now I'm waiting for orders, and while I wait for orders, I'll share an excellent quote from Iggy:

You have mine, right? I sent them in... september.

For those wondering: Yes, ENES-WOM is dead.

However, it's been dead for the better part of a year. It died around nine months ago and I revived it as a zombie. It's still dead, but it keeps moving, despite naysayers (such as Cleric) telling it to lie down and be still.

This should not be considered a license to delay orders further!

I have a question to my fellow modders-

How long does it actually take you to update? I have never seen an update in a running NES take less than 24 hours to get posted after the deadline, but clearly, we don't spend all that time actually working on the update. ;)

It takes me around six hours sitting at the computer to do the entirety of an update, stats included. What about you people?

My last update took me somewhere between 12 and 18 hours, including stats.

At the beginning of the NES, it only took about 3.

At the beginning, it took me 3-4 hours of solid work.

Probably like 10 hours now, but it would be around 6-7 if I could work without interruptions like homework. :p

I really do not know how long I take to update because I work on it bit by bit not all at once. Probablly why I forget so many things :)

If I added it all together probably 2-4 hours.

And it's taking ages. :crazyeye:

Indeed... But I will still love you, so long as Andalusia ceases to exist next turn and the Empire of Christian Spain reigns supreme.

As I tend to do it in two parts and with lots of good music.

The map takes about 20 minutes
The writing of the update about an hour
The updating of stats and casualties takes about another hour and a half.

This is why I like shorter orders, Long orders lead to long updates.

So NK, what was your attack plan against me in FarowNES this turn? I want to know whether I anticipated you again...

Well he has not sent orders yet so I don't even know. In fact since I just recieved most of the orders yesterday afternoon and I am still missing quite a few important ones I will move the deadline to wednesday.

I cannot get the update done till around Friday anyway because of I just recieved orders and I have some things to do.
