Now that Romney has picked Paul Ryan I'm interested to know everyone's opinion. Will Ryan help? Hurt?

I'm honestly not sure, but discussion could be fun. Not going to bother with a poll since this is a bit more nuanced discussion.

As for me, I have no clue anymore. I understood this race before Romney picked Ryan but now I don't know which way is up. I tend to think Ryan will cost Romney at least a little, particularly in Florida, but who knows?

This topic is exceedingly stupid without a poll, but you can have my opinion anyway.

I ended up with too many options :p

Note that I'm debating election results here. You're free to promote Ryan, but that's not really what I'm asking. Unless you're going with the theory that "Everyone will just listen to him, be persuaded and become Limbaugh-loving conservatives overnight" theory. That's laughable, and humans don't work that way.

First of all, Rush Limbaugh is a loud-mouthed idiot, but he's useful in cultivating the less intellectually gifted segements of the population to vote in useful ways.

And second of all, I do believe that the voting public will be much more sympathetic to Ryan's plans once they are unveiled in full. In 2010, the Democrats launched a wide variety of attack ads with all kinds of lies and distortions, mostly pointing out the Ryan Plan's targeting of entitlements of Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security without detailing his plans for cheap, cost-effective private replacements or how dangerous the status quo is to our deficit and ultimately, our economy. Because of these distortions, the plan polled very badly, but many Republicans endorsing his ideals still won sweeping victories, giving the GOP control of the House. Now, Ryan will have a national platform, armed with Mitt Romney's war chest, to communicate his ideas. Hussein Obama has spent the entirety of the campaign trying to point out personal flaws and slinging mud instead of discussing ideas, because he has none besides the failure that is Obamacare. When confronted with the genius of the Ryan Plan, the Democrats will be swept from both the Senate and the Presidency and America will usher in a new, long-lasting conservative majority.

So you cheerlead the creation of a knucklehead caste just to get the votes you want? Nice.

Doubt it, but I could be wrong.

Um, okay.

Sure thing.

So, tell me, mister "Less than 20 posts and I wade into the deep end of Off Topic" whose hand is in the sock?

INB4: Account is from 2009 and it's impossible for someone to use an old account as a sock puppet.

Never mind, I'm not 100% sure. You have a few really old posts. Maybe you're just a lurker.

Anyhow, so you're going with the "Big idea" election scenario. You are basically saying that Ryan will, by simple force of argument, make a huge and permanent conservative majority?

1) Why isn't Ryan at the top of the ticket?

2) When should I expect the huge surge in the polls? Or are we going with the "All polls are lies!" angle?

Okay, so you're going with the "Democrats are communist liars who commit massive voter fraud and work for Satan" line. My response should be?

Because for Romney's ideological faults, he has shown to be a competent executive and manager, and he had a much higher profile going into 2012 than Ryan. Ryan is a legislator, the ideas man who can easily fit the mold of the agenda behind the throne, but not the one in charge of managing it.

The Republican Convention and its aftermath, when media messaging will kick into high gear, would be a good bet.

You should accept that sans exaggerations, Democrats have been registering dead and felonious voters for years for their machine politics.

I doubt that neather of them would even do anything in regards to job creation.

I clicked the link, but did not find your opinion, only a video. Maybe the link is broken?

I think this moves Obama from slight favorite to substantial favorite. Romney/Ryan will have to run a perfect campaign, or hope that some random event happens this fall (like a scandal) for them to have a chance. The specifics of the Ryan plan are going to play poorly in key demographics (like old people), and it'll be very easy to tie the campaign to what may be the worst congress in 100 years. This is exactly the guy team Obama wanted.

It comes down to a choice between continuing policies that are working for the most part or going backwards. If the Ryan budget was ever implemented it would cause a great deal of civil unrest as social Darwinism makes it so that the poor and middle-class are totally screwed. Combine that with the looming environmental crisis and you have a recipe for a truly apocalyptic vision. R/R would take plutocratic government to the extreme. In the long term, it's a Fall of the Empire type of scenario.

It feels like a coin toss right now. No one really likes Obama anymore and a lot of people hate him. On the other hand no one is overjoyed by Romney either. I expect low voter turnout and the winner will win with less than 2%

These don't compute. Low turnout means Romney wins.

Like death panels, free healthcare for illegals, its socialist and its unconstitutional .. oh wait

Romney wins 285 - 253. (That's counting Wisconsin in the blue! We'll have to see what happens there).

Look at it this way: overnight, Romney has become the savior of the GOP through his pick. The base now see him as a man willing to do what it takes to get the country going again.

Have you heard Ryan speak? He sounds a lot like Kennedy, with the politics of Reagan. He's a great asset to have on the VP slot.

Let's be real about one thing, though: Obama was going to (and already has) attacked Romney on the Ryan plan, even before the pick. Now, at least the GOP looks like it has a plan, unlike Obama (whose budget didn't even receive a single electoral vote).
