Why has the Deluxe Edition disappeared from the pre-order options?

Deluxe editions with unnecessary swag are fine... I often buy them myself. However, deluxe editions with special unlocked content are NOT fine... as someone mentioned above, it turns what should be a pleasant experience into an unpleasant decision that makes you unhappy either way -- either you worry that you're missing content, or you feel like a chump paying extra for something that will probably eventually be available for free. I don't see how you can possibly offer an extra faction for a multiplayer game that is not available to everyone without distributing it to everyone in locked form... and that will get unlocked in a jiffy.

If they want to nickel and dime people, they should do it with modular DLC's that you can pick and choose. At least that's honest extortion.

damn it. i didn't see there was a deluxe edition before I pre-ordered the standard version. will i be able to upgrade my version for the price delta? if not, i'm going to have to live without the babylonians - I'm not going to pay twice...

Pre-orders can be cancelled. Check https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3371-TYCN-6835 and this https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4938-WTDF-9465

Notice this burb:

We can make an exception for pre-ordered games if the request is received prior to the release date.

Nope, you get all the swag

@svip

thanks for that, Steam did manage to change it but only by me gifting a version of deluxe to myself and then giving me a refund. It's not possible to personally buy deluxe if you've already bought standard. They did tell me off and said they were making an exception to their normal refund rules because it was pre-order.

I hope that doesn't mean they will force people to pay the full deluxe price if they want to upgrade after it's shipped

i can't wait to develop some bowman strat (like quechua rush or praets or something) and abuse that mechanic to dominate everyone who can't get the deluxe edition.

which goes to show the problem with making this content exclusive to the deluxe edition. They could get some advantage over those of us who only have the regular edition.

And yes I do expect to be able to play people playing babylon in multiplayer even if I don't have deluxe. Other games have this ability, so I would think this one would as well.

I pre-ordered the standard edition from Steam, because the DeLuxe option was not there. Now I have the DeLuxe option, but I already paid for the standard...

Will the content from Deluxe be available as a separate item to buy ?

I doubt they will, that would mean people could simply mod it in to the game

Yeh, I fully agree. I'm essentially looking at paying £24.99 for Civ V or £39.99 for Civ V + Babylon Civ. There are far better ways of doing a deluxe edition without demanding further payment to have a fully set of civs.

2k has already done this with bioshock 2. The mp dlc was already in the game, and people who bought it got it unlocked through a 28kb download. 2ks reasoning for shipping it with the origanal game was so everyone would be able to play mp together, and so it wouldn't split the mp community.

If 2k didn't do this same exact thing with Babylon, meaning having it in every edition, but only unlocked for those who pay, I would be surprised. Either it will split the mp community, or those with Babylon can't use it. Seeing as they seem to want to keep everyone playing mp together, it's only natural to think they will go the bioshock 2 route.

Can you pre-order the digital deluxe edition from any vendor other than Steam?

For the life of me, I can't get Steam to accept passwords to either of my email accounts. Plus I can't get my "lost" password from Steam. I find Steam to be incredibly frustrating -- they just don't want my money, I guess.

I don't see Civ5 at all at direct2drive, which is my favorite vendor. On Amazon which is linked to Civ Fanatics there isn't the digital deluxe option.

Guidance appreciated. Thanks.

deluxe is Steam only.
While other vendors, including the digital distributors could likely offer the standard version, I doubt they'll be very aggressive with pushing it - seeing that its tied to Steam as well and they'd just give Steam free advertising :mischief:
My hunch is: you'll get the game from Steam or from a store/site that sells the discs.

That's really a smart observation. It's also likely that we won't see boxed collector's edition, let's hope it's not true.

Is there any updates as to whether we will be able to get the Babylonians in a different way (later download-able content or in an expansion), or is a Steam pre-order the sole chance to have the civilization?

I would much rather just getting a box, and avoid the online download, but not ever being able to have the Babylonians would completely ruin Civ V and its expansions for me
