Windows 8

If I ever get to the point of upgrading to 8, I'd use the Classic Shell, simply because on the computers I tried at the store its just jarring to have the start menu fill up the entire screen. Still, I'm in no big hurry to upgrade. I'd been using Windows 98 up until 2007, so I'm used to things like that.

I still own a laptop that runs Vista from '08. It barely runs but even when it was not dead I did not and would not upgrade it. Similarly I'm not upgrading my Win 7 machine either.

Actually, the week I stopped using Windows 98 was the same week I joined CFC. Just realized that. I used XP for two years, then I got my Windows Vista machine in 2009, still using the same one (albeit with an extra hard drive and new DVD-R drive).

That's only a 5-year-old laptop; that's nowhere near as impressive as running Windows 98 in 2007. Plenty of people have 5-year-old computers that are still running Vista. And Vista can still run anything you want it to; Windows 98 wasn't quite so fortunate by 2007.

Posted from my laptop that runs XP from '07 (and isn't dead).

I've got an '07 gaming laptop running Vista as well. It goes without saying that I can't use it for many current games anymore. :p

Well I couldnt think of a better term, to be honest :p

That's what I've done. I don't see the Metro screen being good for your home PC, unless it's a touch screen (and you mainly use the touch screen).

I hope Windows 9 is a lot better than Windows 8.

My top 4 favourite criticisms of Windows 8:

1) "So what if Microsoft have a 90% market share? That doesn't mean that Windows is any good. Just because people buy something doesn't mean that it's good. Linux and Mac OS are much better yet they have a tiny market share -- you can't tell from market share whether a product is good or not."

2) "You can tell how crap Windows 8 is, because Microsoft are losing market share. People just aren't buying Windows 8. People aren't even buying new PCs, because they all come with Windows 8 on them! That's how crap Windows 8 is."

3) "Microsoft may be dominant on PCs but in the new markets of mobile, tablets, and other small form factors, they have a tiny fraction of the market. This is a much more significant statistic because the future lies in mobile technology and devices. Windows 8 is completely irrelevant because Microsoft simply won't exist in 2 or 3 years time, when all consumer devices are small, low-power, mobile devices with touch-screen interfaces. Microsoft may be dominant on PCs but the mobile market is the most important. Microsoft and Windows 8 are irrelevant on mobile."

4) "Microsoft's OS sucks for desktops. They've made an OS that can be used on touch-screens, but they should be making an OS designed specifically for desktops. Microsoft should ignore touch-screens and tablets and only focus on desktops. What's the point in developing an OS that can run on touch-screens? I have a desktop."
