Whilst I can't wait to try out CivV, I am slightly concerned about the options on map type.

According to Arioch's:king: excellent website-

Map Type: 4 options (default: Continents)
◦Continents
◦Pangaea
◦Archipelago
◦Random

To me, that only actually makes 3 types. Do we know if this is it, or are we expecting more to be discovered pre-release.

I use to play lots of Hemispheres in Civ4, and Terra was a fun map too. Fingers crossed that these (and others) will be included in the vanilla CivV.

Were Terra maps included in vanilla civ4 ? I can't remember... If not, low are the chances to have them in vanilla civ5 (I enjoy them as well).

Map scripts will probably be made by some good modders anyway. It's also entirely possible more mapscripts will be added between now and release date.

Yeah I wouldn't be too nervous. Map scripts are some of the best mods out there for civ4, I'd expect there to be some good ones fairly quickly for civ5 as well.

Well the terra map type is not a classic type for the series...

If they offered a good colonial gameplay map, I'd even buy that as DLC! But i clearly doubt it. And I still hope for Terra maps in the final build.

My dream would be assigning civs to different continents and then selecting a "handicap" for each continent. This could be zero for the "old world" and a 50% production and science handicap in the "new world". When a NW civ meets an OW civ, the handicap turns into a bonus, and they have double science for some time to catch up.

But civ was never good at simulating clashes between advanced and less-advanced cultures...

I foresee map scripts as additional dlc myself. Think about, besides Civs, and scenarios, map scripts seem the next step. They dont want to change core mechanics, so nothing that does that will be dlc, say for expansions. Theres really not a whole lot they can sell as dlc. Unless they start pumping out new techs with new units and buildings, but that to me is too much.

Actually it has always been described that their would be 3 map types (& random) when Civ5 is released. First confirmed by Elizabeth along with the number of game speeds, difficulties and sizes.

Their will ofcourse be other maps in the "scenarios" part of single player, such as playing an earth map or the various DLC and exclusive scenarios.
As for other standard map types to play on, no information on that so far, but if some are planned they will eventually be released as Patches, (or if you are unlucky DLC, i.e if they decide sure you can play Terra... for £2.50 :P), Or Indeed alternative map types may be developed & included with future Expansion Packs to the game.

But as for confirmed map types (actually their isn't anything else even rumoured), the Continents, Pangea & Archipelago map types will be the only ones on release.

other than the basic map type, there are options for world age, sea levels, temperature, and rainfall, which i think is important to remember, basic shape of landmasses is only one way to edit the world your going to play.

Also, "continents" could have an option to leave some continents empty, resulting in a terra map.

But it might also be that they didn't have time to include gameplay mechanics in the core game that allow for a good colonial gameplay (although the "colonial upkeep" from civ4 was hardly an improvement).

Regarding DLC:
Changes to the tech tree need serious balancing, this stuff is too expensive for DLC. Map scripts are possible IMO.

If it isn't ever released i'm fairly sure some clever clogs can mod in a terra map type

There are a lot more map types available if you go to "Advanced Setup" - those four are just the four basic ones that appear in the normal game setup interface.

im acutally wuite curious as to what, world age does, does it simulate continental drift?

Presumably the same thing they did in Civ I - younger worlds are more rocky and have similar terrain types more clustered together, older worlds have fewer mountains, and the terrain is more broken up.
