Bread still warm from the oven, tasty meat, fresh veggies, oh the horror! :high5:

Subpar bread that doesn't even taste like anything, low amounts of meat that have been sitting out at room temperature all day, and a gigantic pile of shredded iceberg lettuce. Mmmmmm, sign me up.

Was $10 for most footlongs last I checked, which was a week ago when I bought one, which I did because I don't understand this idea that Subway apparently sucks. Maybe the American version sucks, but I don't know what's meant to be so bad about the ones I've been to. It's pretty basic ingredients, so I don't know at what stage they're apparently doing something wrong. It's not like they're using powdered meat or choko instead of carrot. For about the same price you can get a Sumo Salad wrap, which is also great and has better options (e.g. chicken, bacon & avocado), but is quite a bit smaller.

Related, I had a panini the other day that was both the best and most expensive I've bought. $19, but worth it.

Overpriced for little variety (only three kinds of cheese, really?), the bread is disgusting, and at the end of the day you just paid upwards of ten dollars for a pathetic, paltry sandwich. Plus that disgusting "bread-reminiscent" smell makes me gag every time I walk by one of their stores. Especially given how ubiquitous (at least in the US) quality delis are - as illram noted even Safeway does a better subway sandwich than subway does - there's really no excuse for going in there.

I don't understand at all why iceberg lettuce continues being so popular. It's the go to vegetable for people for some reason from what I can see. And yet it contains virtually no nutrients or vitamins and it has no taste. It's basically just pointless filler that you might as well replace with some other veggies like say.. spinach.

I saw the thread title, and usually answer anything that starts with "Would you eat..." with "yes"... but I figured it would be something exotic. This is just a bunch of condiments... similarly, I could drink a glass of vinegar, but I can't think of why I'd want to.

That's why the title is "would you.." not "could you..." I could have eaten that sloppy mess of a sandwich, but under normal day to day circumstances I definitely wouldn't.

I like the bread. What the heck is "subpar" about the bread? Is it exceptional scoring birdies and eagles on every hole bread? No. But it is fresher than bread I have at home on almost any given day. Seems like pretty good bread.

I do always say "light on the lettuce" and agree the normal pile is way too much.

Upwards of ten dollars? Must be a market adjustment. I order the spicy Italian at least in part because it is on the lowest price section of the menu, but at my Subway there is not a sandwich on the board that is over ten dollars, even with tax. The Stater Bros across the street has a deli section, but if I had gone there I would have gotten fried chicken, even if I went in thinking sandwich. It's my kryptonite; smell the fried chicken, buy the fried chicken, eat the fried chicken.

Meh, don't put iceberg lettuce on your sandwich at Subway if you don't like iceberg lettuce. They all carry spinach(pretty sure), which is better(though my wife can't always get it, it throws her vitamin K off, so sometimes iceberg lettuce for her). It's a stout little basic sandwich. The bread isn't artisan. Oh damn. I can't get imported cheese. Oh damn. There's more than enough veggies, the meat ranges from standard lunch meats to alright. They carry avocado, which is yum. Oh, and it's pretty cheap. A 6 inch coldcut trio or veggie runs me less than 5 bucks. Also, if you don't live someplace with a ton of niche little shops it's probably a least bad option for any vegans you have visiting. I mean, I don't like Subway much, but I understood why lots of people were excited when the next town over got one. It's better than having to drive farther for a White Hen(now 7-11) sandwich, which while tastier is also older. It might even be worth the extra 5 minutes on the road to get to instead of eating a Casey's fresh made sub. Which is tolerable but less good.

Man where are these places that don't have better sandwich shops than Subway? Where I live local delis outnumber 7-11's, and there's a lot of freaking 7-11's.

Leave cities of +20,000? I don't eat at Subway if I go to Chicago, but there's an awful lot of the nation out here mang!

The lettuce is on the sandwich to provide the cool and crispy texture, not taste. That's basically what iceberg lettuce is all about. It is the vehicle that carries the flavor elements in a salad, or adds color and texture to a sandwich. Being able to do that without adding any disruptive flavor is what it is for. It is Romaine without adding the distinctive flavor of Romaine, and when it comes to flavor sometimes less is more...unless you are a seven year old with a condiment fetish I guess.

But it is fresher than bread I have at home on almost any given day. Seems like pretty good bread.

Bake your own then.

As for iceberg lettuce, restaurants like to serve it because it is the cheapest, most bland (and thus universally inoffensive) form of lettuce. It also stays fresher longer than most other lettuce.

No, you don't. Silly. But your options without significant travel do get more limited. You also have to be a little cautious, you might break that pinky if it keeps on sticking out. :D

You are in southern California, which means you are within a three hour drive of Palmdale, which is one such place. We don't have many 7-11s either. They can't compete with AM/PM and all the other gas station associated minimarts.

And it isn't all about population Farmboy...Palmdale is ten times your 20,000+ mark and still is on Subway or bust.

I know, I'm just shooting low, and I didn't want to get too into class. People get pissy and this is a fun thread!

Even if I did bake my own. A loaf of bread lasts a week at my girlfriend's house. Subway bread is baked that day. So Subway bread is generally fresher than bread at home even if I baked it myself.

I usually buy her bread at a supermarket, and it isn't as fresh as Subway bread when it gets to the house, but it's still okay.

S'okay, I just enjoy pointing out that Palmdale defies almost all logic.

I don't consider any of the stuff you can get at subway to be "bread". It's just buns. But I'm a bread extremist.

I can live with that. I would say "sandwich roll" instead of "bun" because I think round when I say bun. Perhaps I am a bun extremist?

Excuse while I put on my top hat and monocle...

Honestly I do get it though, most of the local delis I'm thinking of are near my work. My actual home is a lot more limited in what's nearby... there's a good burger place, a decent Vietnamese place, and about a hojillion hole-in-the-wall Mexican places, but no real sandwich choices aside from Subway and Jersey Mike's.

Not that I'm complaining because Jersey Mike's is pretty good.

Hehehe. Can you take a picture and post it in the awesome guys in top hats and monocles thread?
