And a Philadelphia Inquirer editorial has called on Trump to do so!

About those editorials...

What do resident Americans make of this dynamic? (under spoiler)

Isn't that a sign that the field of communication is shifting away from the hands of the established intellectual elites towards other hands, like X?

Here's a link that highlights the dynamic: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-r...al-news-media-in-the-us-with-some-exceptions/

Spoiler the decline :

The collapse of local journalism is climbing up the ladder.

It's not like it's being replaced with journalism.

Absolutely.

News will soon be available only through X posts and instagram videos.

The commentary represented by a NYT or PI editorial now matters only to the intellectual elites. That still does matter in this case, though, because, if Biden is going to be swapped out, the agent for that change will be a group from the intellectual class: DNC party apparatchiks.

Also:

What a difference 12 years make
The difference is Trump. You say, "Trump's only been at it for nine years."

But his birtherism goes back to 2011.

You make it sound like a bad thing, like you don't want them to swap out Biden. Even though that's precisely what would be needed to maximize a Democrat victory.

I can go either way, Joij.

Are you still in a state of confusion & shock over the debate? Or is it more the reaction from the polls afterwards? Or just the fact that now the party officials themselves are finally waking up and realizing he's hopelessly incoherent by stating so publicly?

In an alternate world, Trump would now be 4 months away from the end of being potus (having won in 2020). Typically US presidents have two terms, Biden managed to win, which was an upset in that sense. If we assume he will lose now, it's not damning for Biden himself.
Furthermore, he'd do great to just spend the (apparently little) time he has left in peace, instead of having the stress of potus.

You can read my positions earlier in this thread and in the Presidential Election thread. I've developed them at considerable length.

The simple answer is that any D candidate is preferable to Trump.

The debate performance raised concerns about Biden. Those concerns can be met by fielding a new candidate or by rallying behind Biden. I'm fine with either.

But I'm outside of the circles that will determine that, so, yes, I have to wait on Biden and party officials.

I think the media circus that rose around Biden's, observable, poor performance on the debate has effectively killed any chances for Biden's re-election, more so when the "left" (you have no "classical" EU left in the US) leaning media reached the same observation.
Trump will lie and cheat like always, but he still looks "fit" to be POTUS! We can argue around Biden's perceived frailty (which has been a trait since he first became POTUS btw) saying that the cabinet "helps" make the decisions (and "rightly" so!) against a authoritarian one man (child) that decides all like loney Trump. But admitting to this gives a perspective that the cabinet may be more important than the POTUS himself!...Is it? Should it be? Are the advisors accountable?
From this side of the pond we can only observe in awe (and dread) on how could your democracy produce/allow only 2 candidates to lead the most powerful country in the world and both contenders are not only mentally unfit, one of them is also physically very frail.

It is a very strange occurrence in the US when voters are told they have one choice [Biden] to save democracy. I'm sure smarter people do see the irony here...

The irony disappears, though, if you replace "are told they have" with just "have." Since there is no one "telling" voters this; it just is the case. (People may point out that it is the case; it's something that it would be difficult to think that one wasn't allowed to talk about at all.)

Cornel West is looking better every day

Maybe smarter people need to be reminded how one of the candidates dealt with the election results of 2020.

Maybe those smarter people need to listen to both candidates, since both of them claim they're saving democracy.

Watching it 10 hours later, Biden sounds really bad. So far 12min in he just lost it, I'm cringing for him. He's talking like he's afraid he'll forget what he's saying if he pauses even for a second.

Yeah I just can't watch, turned off around 15min in.

So absurd that Biden is supposed to be our great man. It's like a neighborhood bully beating up a disabled kid. You could get any number of people who could actually fight to pick apart the bully but nah, let's let the crippled kid defend us. :(

Thanks for posting the full debate :hatsoff:

You already have your third party candidate. What the hell are you talking about?

(I've met Cornel West. Went to a lecture he gave at a nearby college.)
