Your earlier metaphors are apt. If two people are playing chess in a park, and a third guy comes with a bowling ball and knocks down all the pieces, he wins. At bowling. It's an empty victory. It's the people standing around the chessboard who need to be clear on the matter.

Let's imagine a voter who does care about the size of the debt. Which of the two candidates gave an answer that indicated how he would reduce it?

I think regardless of the debate format, the candidates are still going to steer to the blipvert. I don’t think it’s due to shortening attention spans, but media coverage tending to be heavy on short clips.

That's fair, but I'd still watch a beer advert over any debate (longer than the span of a commercial advert). Admittedly, mainly because I'm too lazy to use adblockers. Even political adverts don't come across the same way as "hey, here's something you can consume". Nevermind debates.

IMHO, that is not the question. The question should be: does any of these two men show a capable mind to be president? And the answer to that question is: NO.

Biden can give a more articulate bunch of bull about he he would reduce it, Trump will give will give a more entertaining one. Will either of them do it? Unlikely.

One acknowledges radical reform is necessary. He's right about that. He's bats*** crazy and he makes a mockery of these silly debates and promises that won't be kept but people let him do it because these debates are already a joke and have been for my lifetime at least.

In an unhurried context--one of his rallies, say--he would speak the same way. It arises from a specific limitation in his cognitive abilities. It is one to which we have long become accustomed/numbed. Samson gets at it when he says Trump's mind works with "tokens." But if the question is cognitive ability, then this limitation of his should be brought back into full focus, not just ceded him as "oh that's just Trump."
