Inspired by Bozo Erectus, but I think a more interesting question:

Do you prefer being "right", or being happy?

I thought about this, and came to the conclusion that I'd prefer to be "right", as in "knowing the truth".

let's say you get in an argument with a significant other and you know they is being irrational. You could point this out and be right, or you can let it blow over and be happy with that person. Which is better?

happy

I love it when I am right sometimes, and hate it other times, but I alwyas love it when I am happy.

Say: "Yes dear, you are right", while knowing you are right and be happy at the same time.

You'd be lying of course, so if you consider lying a sin, this isn't an option.

I did not make my distinction clear: not "are right", but "be right"

You never really know you're right (I don't think truth is absolute), while knowing if you're happy is easy. And more enjoyable too. So I'd rather be happy. If you're not happy, what's the point?

If you knew a war was going to screw up your country, and turns out it did... not happy, but right.

If you know your brother is goign to die of cancer, and he does... not happy, but right.

I would rather be Happy.

I have enough of the "Why do I always have to right all the time?" moments already.

I'll take the blue pill, Morpheus.

Assuming you choose your SO carefully, this won't come up often. But it will come up.

You cannot 'be right' all the time without being a jerk. And you can't 'be happy' all the time without becoming a doormat. So pick your battles carefully. Let the small stuff slide, and fight only the issues that really matter to you.

It's usually a function of brain chemistry.

Normal people tend to assess their intelligence (compared to average) too high. Depressed people don't as much.

A happy person thinks they're smarter than average. A depressed person knows when they're average or less than average. In general, the depressed person is more right.

(same thing happens when people rate their looks compared to average)
