A compilation of maps and script with culturally linked start location or TSL
Here are the logs again...
well that's the problem. Here's a screenshot from my recent game on the earth map. I took this around the time I first posted in this thread.
Spoiler Tundra tiles :
As you can see, there are tundra tiles very close to Toronto, just over the Canadian border. In real life, this area is very warm for a good portion of the year, and southern Ontario even has wineries. Here's a satellite image of the area around Toronto:
Spoiler Satillite of Toronto :
As you can see, there's no real difference in vegetation across the border. The first image I linked from National Geographic showed tundra being a biome at the very northern reaches of Canada. I think this definition only considers areas north of the three line while in Civ 6, trees can grow in tundra. For that reason, I'd think it would be reasonable for the tundra to begin in the browner area at the top of the satellite image. In the largest earth map, this is the place where SNOW tiles begin.
Basically, it's not an easy fix. The entire span of Canada is incorrect.
This is tundra:
Spoiler Tundra image :
and this is a provincial park right where the tundra tiles are on the map (on Lake Huron)
Spoiler Awenda Provincial Park :
Don't forget the Agawa Canyon:
Unlike in the map packs, Agawa Canyon is a mixed deciduous/coniferous forest made famous by the Group of Seven painters.
I think there is a misunderstanding, I'm not going to work on pictures or real maps or location names, I don't have the required time for that ATM, you know those regions, I don't, sorry.
But I can work on hexes with coordinates, for example change tundra to grassland/forest from (x=25, y=70) to (x=50, y=80), see FP for the how to get X, Y in game.
Anyone knows if the TSL is a function of the Leader or of the Civilization?
Or what has to be done to let Barbarossa start in Aachen and Peter in St. Petersburg?
edit: Would also be interesting for when they add various leaders officially in the game in future. Leader based TSL would make much more sense then. Would be weird to have Barbarossa start in Berlin and e.g. Bismarck/Friederich II/Hitler/whatever start not in Berlin.
Dunkleosteus brings up some good points. In my opinion, Tundra tiles should be reserved for where real tundra is, while Tundra-Forest is the Taiga forest. Snow tiles should be either A: extremely cold regions where there is snow year-round or B: Ice caps, so Antarctica and most of Greenland. There is also quite a lot of Snow tiles in Kola and northernmost Norway in the Giant Earth map (the one I play.) These should probably be tundra. Also on the Barbarossa starting in Aachen thing, it's probably possible in the Europe map, but in the Giant Earth it would be quite close to France's start, and would definitely not be possible if Firaxis adds the Netherlands to the game.
Overall, though, I think these maps are amazing.
see How to use the advanced TSL placement options in second post.
I've downloaded a few new nations from this site but they don't appear on the Earth map (I've tried the biggest one) at all, I simply didn't get any unit and 2 computer factions had the same problem as well. Other 22 vanilla seemed to work OK. Is this a bug or I should properly set the game?
Why is "No Tribal Villages" automatically on (and greyed out) for True Starting Locations map?
Ged, I was thinking... is making the Cliffs of Dover 2 coastal tiles doable? It would free up the 2 grass tiles for London.
edit: or boost the yield somehow. London still has it rough. If switching the wonder to the coast isn't feasible, maybe have it increase food of adjacent tiles?
edit 2: although, cosmetically, I find it appealing to have that open expanse.
Has anyone been able to get Sukritact's Ethiopia or JFD's Italy working with the Giant Earth map?
yeah please make the cliffs of dover buildable! i'm still waiting for someone to do it until now haha
Yea, would make a significant difference.
I've played the map heavily with every civ except Macedon. Even Cleo and Tomyris have stronger starts, and I've even settled Tomyris on turn 21 and had a stronger start.
England has horrible terrain (except that north spot) and no chance for 1st envoy with anyone except faith. The river placement is ok, except to the west, on the hills, where ideally it would cut NW to the coast. Hills could use some forest at least. Maybe the only civ with mostly 2/1 plots.
Current game I used map generator for resources and got lucky with lots of sheep.
But its a start tight on space with lots of coast, and crowding to the south. Two unworkable tiles is huge.
I'm thinking art may be outside Ged's area of expertise though. I don't know if a specific wonder can be made 'workable'. But changing the wonder to 4 coast tiles would do it.
huh sounds like a workable idea, could you give it a try?
No. On a good day I can find the power button on my computer. If I start messing with files, something is going to blow.
I think the last rework of this map regarding geography was mine, so I tell my opinion. Please understand one thing: We're not living in your area and although our geography knowledge may be advanced, it is of course not perfect (I like Canada btw, but no expert). We need at least screenshots to revisit certain areas or even exact map coordinates.
@Gedemon: if you get requests for geography changes, please collect them if possible and contact me. I'd love to help out!
This thread has almost 2.000 posts, too many to read them all if you didn't follow the thread for the last year ...
Would it be possible to have an own category/folder Ynamp with own threads for single topics like :
- Ynamp news, versions, releases
- Known Bugs, Crashes, technical support
- Mod compatibility
- How to ... change TSL, Terrain, ... use Worldbuilder
- Earth map discussions (one for each map size)
- Small talk and Thanks
Important postings might be transferred/duplicated from this thread into the new topic threads ...
The long thread than might be closed but would be still available as resource ...
I'll ask for a new subforum, a thread for each map would help to organize them, and it's time to add more, if the community is willing to edit the XML for the TSL.
What file do you edit to put in the natural wonder coordinates and code?
Look for the big [map].lua-files like GiantEarth.lua in the Maps/GiantEarth-Folder.
See post #2 by Gedemon for modding infos.
