You are king of a small sized island, what weapon systems do you use to defend it?

Earthquake bombs used as far back as late ww2 were great at collapsing underground constructions. The german sub yard in France was gutted by a single earthquake bomb it left the structure intact but the intense waves wrecked and gutted the internal yards so badly that it put it out of use for the war. Needless to say 100% internal casualties.

EDIT: Entrenched Sams idea is nice idea though moving your surface fleet out leaves it outside the defence umbrella leaving them vunreable to airpower. Once your surface fleet is gone and you enter siege invaders can simply let you wither on the vine.

Singular tunnels arent the same. Such bombs were not used to any great effect against the Japanese, who extensively used tunnels and warrens to defend their islands.

The only other thing I forgot to mention was using anti-pers mines along common areas of approach. Add that in as well.

I'd suck up to the Americans by erecting an enormous McDonalds sign over the volcano and complain about Iraq, Iran and North Korea. No need for any deterrence then.

What if you are being attacked by the Americans? Or one of their allies?

You wont win, but like I said, you can make it as painful as possible and try for the media win ala Vietnam. Probably wont work since the Island is so small, but hey, its all you got.

Build Über geothermal power source, develop 1 Giga joule railgun build them at strategic points, put nuclear bombs under the crust around island (through pipe) enemy comes, detonate one, I don't know what kind of boat other then a sub that can survive 100ft waves, and the shock wave would kill those, tons of 1 Mega-joule railgun for Aircrafts... and any surviving ships, should range 500 miles+... that railgun will kill any ships, bombs kill subs, Oh i forgot lots of AA turrets, they capture base, I make volcano go BOOM!! and have a nice posh foreign resort, and they get to pay to see a military 100 times as big as my island pop get slaughtered

Wasn't meant you you Mobby.

I was talking about the strategy of using the US by PS.

If the US or one of its allies is the attacker, then you cannot use strat at all.

I'll dig down to the heart of the island, move the wheel and hide it in another time. Rinse and repeat ;)

Seriously, may I ask what island are we seeing? Just a random one? If so, could we get another one? If no, was there any special intention in asking us that question?

Actually, I think I'd defend the outer perimeter of my island nation with 80+ year old men in thong bikini's. Noone would come within 1000 miles of my island, and anyone who did would instantly begin vomiting/dry-heaving uncontrollably and be an easy target.

Buy some nukes and use them to detonate the volcano in the event of an invasion. Use guerilla warfare and the cover of the volcanic ash to pick off the enemy as they flee from the island. Planes can't fly through that stuff easily and satellites would have trouble getting images. Even infra-red would probably get confused, what with all the heat and fire.

Of course, there would be the small matter of relying on the enemy invading when the volcano is ready to blow...

All 53 (something around 50) Earthquake bombs were employed by the British ONLY on German targets. They used specially modified unarmed lancaster bombers to carry the massive bomb and only every deployed them on specific targets.

The US did NOT develop earth quake bombs until AFTER the war.

After World War II the United States developed the 43,600 lb (19,800 kg) T12 demolition bomb that was designed to create an earth quake effect. There was little or no development of conventional deep penetrating bombs until the first Gulf War

Given their high unit cost, Tallboys were used exclusively against high-value strategic targets which could not be destroyed by other means. When it was found that the Lancaster could be modified to carry a bomb larger than the Tallboy, Wallis produced the even larger Grand Slam bomb.

Hmm...

I'd start with Alterran Drone weapons:

droneweaponancient01.jpg

Which would be controlled via a control chair inside a mountain. I'd recreate the Cheyenne Mountain complex (able to withstand a 5 megaton nuke) under another mountain, I'd mount railguns, SSM, and SAM missile launchers on the hills, surround certain sections of the coast with walls, equip some of the battlecruisers with drones, and to top it off, I'd place a fully operational Tesla Canon on top of one of the tallest mountains.

Tesla Canon

I shall use the weapon of tax havens to defend it.

Somebody Else's Problem field.

Spoiler :
They had arrived at it. The second strangest thing about the ship was watching the Somebody Else's Problem field at work. They could now clearly see the ship for what it was simply because they knew it was there. It was quite apparent, however, that nobody else could. This wasn't because it was actually invisible or anything hyper-impossible like that. The technology involved in making anything invisible is so infinitely complex that nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand million, nine hundred and ninety-nine million, nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine times out of a billion it is much simpler and more effective just to take the thing away and do without it. The ultra-famous sciento- magician Effrafax of Wug once bet his life that, given a year, he could render the great megamountain Magramal entirely invisible.
Having spent most of the year jiggling around with immense Lux- O-Valves and Refracto-Nullifiers and Spectrum-Bypass-O-Matics, he realized, with nine hours to go, that he wasn't going to make it.
So, he and his friends, and his friends' friends, and his friends' friends' friends, and his friends' friends' friends' friends, and some rather less good friends of theirs who happened to own a major stellar trucking company, put in what is now widely recognized as being the hardest night's work in history, and, sure enough, on the following day, Magramal was no longer visible. Effrafax lost his bet -- and therefore his life -- simply because some pedantic adjudicating official noticed (a) that when walking around the area that Magramal ought to be he didn't trip over or break his nose on anything, and (b) a suspicious-looking extra moon.
The Somebody Else's Problem field is much simpler and more effective, and what's more can be run for over a hundred years on a single torch battery. This is because it relies on people's natural predisposition not to see anything they don't want to, weren't expecting, or can't explain. If Effrafax had painted the mountain pink and erected a cheap and simple Somebody Else's Problem field on it, then people would have walked past the mountain, round it, even over it, and simply never have noticed that the thing was there.

Nuclear sea mines, nuclear tipped AA systems.

Oh! Oh! new idea!

Assign everyone on the island an RFID tag in their skin. Then, give them personal shields that activate only when a nuke goes off. The shield will protect them (think Halo-style, only stronger), as long as their RFID is active.

When someone tries to invade, set off a nuke...though that does create the problem of what one will be ruling over after the initial invasion....

Edit: better idea

Suicide Robots. Each one looks like an extremely hot babe, wearing nothing but a bikini, and stays on the beach. When soldiers come, they run up and hug them....then blow up. However, they're made out of nanobots that can reform and repeat the process.
