Your Defenition of "the west"

I've seen very little of this thread. I noticed that some people are thinking Latin America isn't Western.

Latin America is part of the west. The culture there is based on European and American cultures. It's not Islamic, totalitarian, or Hindu. It's mostly not communistic. There are no monarchies either.

Most of Latin American nations are republics respecting human rights (generally). Peru, my wife's home country, is fully westernized. They don't have the powerful economy of a European nation, but information flows freely there, human rights are respected (mostly), the economy is capitalistic, and the government is a republic.

rmsharpe's map in the first page of this thread is wholly inaccurate. Also, he incorrectly labeled South Africa as nonwestern. I can understand that though, since he's a fanboy of apartheid.

It depends. It has fused with a lot of indigenous cultures though. It's partially western I'd say but not purely like American, European or former British colonies like Canada and Australia.

Poor and western are not the same thing.

P.S. on PBS right now they are airing a program called "the west" I think some of you may like it.

Why do you bump this thread?

BTW: "West" is "Wild West", which was seen in cowboy movies. Northern Mexico and SE US states are "the West".

Because they go at legnth to describe what the west is and isn't and since they agree with me I thought I'd bump it.

Poor Switzerland
Poor Finland
...

As I predicted. You will now receive the prepared response:

"Go ahead and presume that when I said "more or less", those countries would count in the 'more' category."

I'm not going to go through them all one at a time, saying Sweden & Ireland are more, while Turkey is less, etc. See, I try to make short posts, and this is what happens... people don't accept them. Then I make long posts, and they complain it's too much. Can't win... but fortunately I always know what you guys are going to say, before you do so.

In the very strict sense I'd say USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, all European countries to the west of the German/Polish border, Finland, Austria.. I think I didn't leave one out.

When we losen up things a bit, we can add Japan, Greece, EU-Eastern Europe, Turkey, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil.. more or less in that order.

I fail too see why would Finland or Austria be considered Western if Estonia, Hungary or the Czech Republic wouldn't.

In a strictly CULTURAL sense, the West is defined by its shared culture, and taken from this perspective, there is absolutely no reason why to exclude countries which joined the EU in 2004.

Don't forget Poland

Don't forget Poland

OK, Dubya. We're not forgetting Poland.

The 'questionable' areas/countries that just came to mind however are Belarus, and Ukraine. Historically these are (respecitvely) AKA Russia Jr., and Russia's red-headed stepchild that gets beaten when daddy gets drunk on Vodka. Then again the Baltic States (certainly part of the 'West') are similar, only daddy treated them a little nicer. So, Ukraine... MAYBE is potentially 'becoming part of the West', but Belarus... I just don't think so. If they had their way, they'd join w/ Russia. Russia itself just prefers having them as a sidekick, so they don't have to pay the child support. I dunno. It's tough, with these 2.

"the west"
... a place that you will never reach, only in your dreams.
As Terra is round, west is at any point...

West definition is pointless and I don't get bothered by what it is
See how Turkey is only considered a western country after NATO?
Even though its the poorest country in Europe

EVEN worse is people who complain about what they are classified as
Does it matter even?
StOOpid people
