YUINES III - Update Two
Years 1263-1265 Anno Domini
Domestic Events
The Venetians have managed to take over quite a few of the trading hotspots formerly dominated by the Genoans, as their western neighbor no longer has the state-backed muscle to aid its traitors in turf disputes. While Genoan merchants have not been pushed out of everywhere, the Venetians have made significant headway in Egypt and Constantinople, both of which were formerly dominated by Genoan traders. The Genoans still manage to safely trade in all of these ports, and in areas traditionally opposed to the Venetians such as Antioch they still have supremacy. Pleas to Charles, their new King, for some sort of protection for their still abundant number of overseas traders have fallen on completely deaf ears at the Neapolitan court. A number of secret societies have formed in Genoa with intention of eventually expelling the Angevin Occupiers from their fair city and restoring to the republic. These societies have presumptuous and rather boring names such as the Order of the Lion, and the Order of the Silver Rose yet nonetheless seem to frighten the local administrators greatly. Some of their nastier stunts have been the lynching of certain tax collectors deemed to be overly oppressive, hurting the profitability of their city to the Angevins

In an effort to appease many of his subjects who were greatly unsettled by his abstention from the recent crusade King Louis XIII has begun to build churches and monasteries all across France at a furious pace, reinvigorating the at-times stale religious culture of France. Several magnificent new cathedrals have arisen across Paris and other major cities in France, monks have been given elaborate new silk robes, and gifts have even been sent to the Pope as a way of sort of, kind of, apologizing for not participating. This has done a great deal to reassure the little people of their divinely appointed monarchs piety, and the clergy are too busy getting drunk on their new wine to find something new to complain about in Christianitys Eldest Daughter.

There has been increasing calls for the Marinid Sultan (the Caliph is largely his mouthpiece and a tool for legitimacy. It has no serious power in the Caliphate) to further disseminate his authority throughout his Empire and allow for independent sultans, who will still be ultimately subordinate to his will yet also have a great deal of autonomy within the Caliphate, to be appointed in Eastern Algeria, Tunisia, and Tripolitania. They believe that the Sultan cannot effectively and fairly rule over such a vast territory encompassing nearly all of North Africa and some of Iberia and Sicily. Some regional clerics have also begun preaching against the excess of the admittedly rather decadent regime in Morocco.

In Poland attempts to create centrally planned and paid for waste management and free public education have been raucously laughed at pretty much across the board with the lone exception of two or three bleeding heart monk types. While this is not quite sever enough to result in the deposition of the Polish monarch it has earned him the moniker King Bolislav the Mad as his attempts, while in the best of intentions, were doomed to failure from the start. The one perhaps semi-bright glimmer of success from this whole expenditure was that disease rates in Poland have fallen somewhat after the attempt to clean up the streets, and there have been some monks who have postulated a link between cleanliness and avoidance of disease. This has found company in some thought held-over from the black Plague and will perhaps help prevent some future disease if it keeps hold over the fickle scientific consensus.

In the ever volatile of conglomerate nationalities that is the modern Teutonic Orders one of the various peoples complaints will tend to grow more and more heated until eventually the whole thing flares up into rebellion. Unfortunately, this was the case these past few years for the Lithuanians within the Orders boundaries as their long unhappy subjection was the kindling for a burning fire of rebellion. The Teutonic Order managed to win each battle in turn, but that has not yet been quite enough to fully quash the rebellion, as it still some life in bands of insurgents who are supported by the populace and stage periodic raids out of the Medinninkai Highlands on either foreign traders or the occasional military payroll.

In Jerusalem there has been a great deal of anger over the monarchys recent collaboration with the Marinids in the attempted to reconquest of Sicily. Some of these nobles view an alliance with the Infidel to defeat fellow Christians, and Catholic ones at that, to be some of the worse kind of heresy and are actively supporting that the brother of the current ruler become regent for the kings young son, and that Conrad III be deposed.

The Kingdom of Norway-Scotland has experienced great success in monetizing the means of trade in the earlier bits of this decade, owing to both their newly massive government expenditure and the large amounts of gold and other precious metals that were looted from England in the recent war that flamed up in the Isles recently. Despite some worries from old-fashioned merchants and traders accustomed to bartering or using whatever sort of currency can be agreed upon at the time that this new system may have some drawbacks, these concerns have tended to be little more than paranoia as there has even been increased traffic towards this part of Northern Europe. Unfortunately some of the more far-flung parts of the Kingdom have yet to receive any of the benefits produced by this currency, and there many of the detractors have gained some more ground.

As opposed to Serbia, where the Bulgarians are either oppressed and impressed into border militias, forced into slavery, or in the best possible case are ruled over by a semi-autonomous warlord with the sanction of the central government from Prizren who has the pleasure to do whatever he likes with the local population, the Bulgarians of the Byzantine Empire are having their lot continually improved. Although the attempts to provide schooling through the churches have failed rather miserably, in all other circumstances not only have the roads and churches been vastly improved, the huge influx of spending from Constantinople has done a great deal to basically end the recovery of the Bulgarian economy and populace from the disastrous effects of the X Crusade.

Diplomatic Events
In the past few years nations dependent on mercenaries have been waging a lot of war, and have thus increased the demand exponentially for these soldiers of fortune. Thus since there has not been enough growth in mercenaries on the market in order to fully satisfy (That aside, there are some new additions to this violent trade; veterans from the crusade who realized the sword is a much more profitable endeavor than the plowshare) pretty much universally soldiers have been able to demand a higher price for their labors, with some success.

Rather ingloriously for Christendom, the great 11th Crusade on the Marinids, intended to liberate North Africa from the savage Mohammedans was ended with a treaty negotiated by the magnates on both sides. Some of the terms included the preservation of the current status quo in Sicily regarding the occupation of territory, a surprising guarantee of freedom of religion for all Christians residing in the areas ruled by Marinid Caliph, reduction of the Sicilian Army and the Marinid garrison in Sicily, and the somewhat specious from a religious standpoint removal of tariffs on Roman shipping in Marinid Ports and a sizable indemnity to be paid to the coffers of the Church.
In response to the English invasion of Munster in the previous year across the Fair Isle the soldierly and magnates have flocked to the banner of Norway-Scotland. In Connacht particularly, the pro-English government retains hardly any support outside Connacht proper and for bands of government soldiers it has become very dangerous to venture out of their fortresses in small groups.
The Duke of Schleswig-Holstein recently send his first born son to assume a position as an aide-de-camp to one to the commanding general in the Norwegian invasion of as a sign of friendship between the two rulers. Once he heard word of this the King of Denmark came to tell the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein that his son must be immediately recalled and this intervention into the wars of the British Isles and the other Scandinavian kingdoms are completely inappropriate and are in direct confliction of Danish vassal law. After this, the Duke basically told the King of Denmark that he could shove his constructionist thoughts up where the sun dont shine. This rupture in relations between the King of Denmark have alarmed lovers of the status quo around Scandinavia and the vultures seem to already be circling around the weakened Kingdom of Denmark.

There has been a great groundswell of support for the deposed Davidians in the Crimean Civil War which has led to them regaining the advantage in this conflict, which almost all foreign observers had thought would quickly have resulted in their destruction by the Edigids. Support from such diverse sources as the Teutonic Order, the Poles, and even His Holiness the Pope himself have not only been a huge boost to the morale of the soldiers of the Tatar Christians but they have also provided a great deal of material support, even sending regiments of soldiers to actively fight for the restoration of Christian rule in Crimea. Unfortunately some of the rather narrow-minded benefactors of the Teutonic Order have refused to aid a group of people they view as simply heretics (Well it is true a small number of the Davidians have converted to Catholicism, but they are in a definitive minority), little or no better than the Muslims themselves.

Military Events
To the inestimable dismay of the hapless Sicilians, their pretty little Duchy was invaded dually by the Jerusalemites and the Marinids these past few years. Although the Sicilian leadership was probably stronger, at the end of the day, and much more committed than the generals in Jerusalem or from Morocco, unfortunately for the duchy the sheer numerical and equipment advantages enjoyed by the allies were simply too much for her humble defenses. After an amphibious landing on Catania by the Jerusalemites and the destruction or capture of almost all the Sicilian fleet the Jerusalemites were able to land all their forces and began operations for the conquest of Sicily. Due to the nature of the terrain of Eastern Sicily the forces of Jerusalem incurred some serious casualties. After the fall of Palermo due to the betrayal of some magnates who were bribed by the allure of Jerusalems gold and the legal superiority of their cause (but mostly the gold) who opened the gates of this incredible fortress. After the collapse of most organized resistance by the central government the island basically fell wholesale to the invaders. There are still some flickers of resistance, and the duke was able to make a last-minute escape to the court of Anjou. Jerusalem has largely created a new aristocracy of the magnates willing to change their allegiance at the time of invasion who are pretty much loyal to them.

The reorganized Byzantine Army launched a huge expedition with the pointed purpose of reclaiming a great deal of Anatolia that was formally theirs. This force started out in Prusa, and launched a huge spearhead into the territory of the Hamidoglu. The Byzantines exploited the positioning of the Turkish forces in the center of Anatolia finishing their occupation of Esrefyagollum. They managed to occupy significant parts of their territory and were aided by Greeks along the coast to a great degree. The campaigns of 1363 culminated with the fall/liberation of Smyrna towards the end of the 1363 campaigning season. As the Byzantines advanced inland they encountered some minor opposition, yet the main body of the Turkish force was only then returning from their previous war. As the Byzantine forces advanced across the Hamidoglu territory, it seems that this once mighty beylik was destined for a short life-span. Yet in a key battle at Eskisiher the Turks managed to launch a surprise attack on the main Byzantine force, at least saving their nation for another day, for now. The Byzantines have managed to wrest control of most of the coastline, while most of the interior is contested between one force or another. The war exhaustion in Anatolia is rampant, and some are even seeing surrender to the Byzantines to stop the conflict as a viable option.

Jerusalem staged an expedition to attempt to conquer Aqaba, yet it turned out to be a much harder nut to crack than the commanders of the Christians estimated they would be. As is the tendency when knights get involved, they believed they could simply charge in and be as radiant symbols of chivalry as they could be. Unfortunately, that was startling insufficient for this expedition, as after a handful of initial successes the expedition fell victim to extremely poor planning and the split of Jerusalems forces between Sicily and the Levant. Although Aqaba is technically under siege not only are the besiegers the ones doing most of the starving and dying, Damascus has entered the war to protect their little cousin to the south and prevent Jerusalem from acquiring supremacy in the Levant. They are even now amassing an army with the intention of invading Jerusalem proper.

One of the largest conflicts this year occurred in Crimea. The conflict began when the Davidians began a lightning offensive into the territory of the Edigids. Along with large amounts of support from the Teutonic Order and even Poland they managed to shock and overwhelm the initial defenses of the Edigids, many of whom were occupied in the east of the nation when the Saksin Khanate invaded with overwhelming force. The Saksin Khanate may have even conquered all of Crimea before the Davidians would have had a real chance to conquer the Edigids and Agmescit was it not for the severing of their extremely over-extended supply lines and the fact the harvest of 1363 in the normally fertile Crimea basin was a terrible failure due to drought. Eventually even when the Edigids managed to regroup their armies to face the allied force of Christians in the north of their lands they were defeated in a massive battle along the plains of the Ukraine. The authority of the Edigids and nearly all of their military power was demolished by the end of 1263. Although the Khan of the Edigids was still alive, he surrendered to the forces of the Saksin Khanate in early 1264 to avoid harsher treatment at the hands of the Davidians.
In a cooperative effort with the Edigids, a large Venetian fleet sailed north, snapping up whichever Genoan ports in the Aegean which had not already succumbed to either them or the Byzantines. This force arrived north, and a terrible slaughter ensued in the Republic of Kaffa, whose citizens would rather die than become second-class citizens under the hated Venetians. Subsequently, the Venetians sent a out raiding parties along the coastline of the Agmescit Khanate. The Davidians were attempting to advance south the subdue the Agmescit Khanate, yet gradually many of their conscripts melted away and their own professional soldiers were beginning to protest the years they had been forced to spend on campaign with no sign of peace. This significantly slowed their progress, and allowed for some flickers of resistance to continue within the Agmescit Khanate. The Venetians attempted to land and link up with the Davidian forces, but that attempt failed miserably, with the Venetian forces massacred on the beaches of Crimea. At the end of the three years, the Davidians are very close to re-unifying Crimea, yet there are still some major obstacles in their way and foreign support is still essential to the stability of their regime.
