What causes Global Warming?

Pollution does not cause global warming

I've thoroughly tested this and pollution on the ground has no effect on global warming at all. It may degrade the tile it is on if not cleaned up for a while. I asked the main programmer and he confirmed it. If the tile isn't important to you, you don't need to rush to clean it up.

So, what does cause global warming? Three things. Production, population, and nuking (especially nuking).

The more shields a city produces the more chance of pollution and global warming. Population over 12 in a city also causes pollution and global warming. The number of 'triangles' in a city are an indication of how much you are polluting.

Is there any way to adjust the Global Warming threshold?

I'm working on my own scenario. It's not all that different from a typical scenario based on Marla's 256x256 map.

Heya, Um, you sure about this, My game starts with 7 locations of pollution, no cities and within 3 turns the little global warming icons start to appear...

Also, Is the POP 12 set in stone or based on the editor values of a Metropolis? I have set the values of a village (size 1) to 10, and a Town (size 2) to 20, does that mean that I'll start getting pollution at size 12 or 20?

Fairly certain as the guys at Firaxis confirmed it after I asked them when I wasn't getting global warming for one of my scenarios. I made a scenario with huge amounts of pollution and the 'sun' didn't appear. You need population or production (certain buildings will do this quickly, anything like a factory or powerplant). These put the 'triangles' in your cities.

You can get rid of it by changing the global warming effect for each terrain to itself. It'll say that you have global warming, but there won't be any bad effect.
