2019 Christmas Thread

Wow so this is the whiniest first world rant ever, especially compared to the last few posts -

But the gift packages that were supposed to arrive from family on yesterday did not come and I don't think they're coming today either. :(

In Canada we just accept that some Christmas stuff isn't going to arrive on time, even though Canada Post has been delivering parcels and mail even on the weekend (I was surprised when the mailman woke me up on Saturday mornings a couple of times).

If it takes much longer, though, you might want to let people know so they can track the stuff (if possible).

One of the penguins I ordered hasn't arrived yet.

My belly-aching like a spoiled brat is directed at family for mailing it late, not the various parcel services they used. I will let them know if it doesn't arrive by next week though.

Monica didn't make it here in time for Christmas, She had it finish up her treatise and then she got sick. When she finally got her she asked if she could stay into the new year because "there was no food in Mabini,. I love the Philippines, but sometimes its grinding poverty breaks my heart. I went out and bought a 50-kilo bag of rice which Rigo will be taking to Monica's family and neighbors. Merry Christmas. :xmascheers:

I got a present the day after Christmas... my wife was so disappointed that it didn't arrive on time. It was being delivered by an Amazon contractor and tracking showed that it was in a town about 50 miles away on Christmas eve, but I imaging the contractor was just overwhelmed and unable to get to it on time.

So....

What gifts are you all re-gifting or throwing away?

I'm not going to re-gift this, but I got an insta-pot and I have no idea what to do with it. We already have a rice cooker and a slow cooker, I don't know what this thing does that those don't do. Edit: Ok apparently it is also a pressure cooker and we don't have one of those. Not sure what recpies require a pressure cooker though.

My slow cooker takes care of those well enough. The only advantage I can give a pressure cooker is that it will do it faster.

It replaces both of those things, and yes, also does pressure cooking.

It's also a lot faster than a crockpot, if need be. I made a slow cooker pulled pork recipe in like 40 minutes total once. Fast, slow, somewhere in between, rice cooking, steaming, slow cooking, pressure cooking...

But, sometimes, you just can't wait ;) But yeah, I use a slow cooker also.

You can also use a pressure cooker as a regular cooking pot. I have no other pots of that size so the by now depressurised pressure cooker has been repurposed as super-large cooking pot, useful for stuffings, stews and so on.

An actual slow cooker would be nice.

Some sad Christmas news... the person who wrote the words to the opening song of the Charlie Brown Christmas special has died. :(

That music is so iconic. It's running through my head right now, and I haven't even seen the show in years. It's that memorable.

Bonus: Here's "Linus and Lucy", another of the iconic pieces of music. The drummer is the last surviving musician who originally recorded this song in the '60s:

That song is so epic. Such a treat to see it performed by the actual band. Thanks Valka :)

Apparently someone nominated me for some "adopt-a-grandparent" Christmas charity thing. Out of the blue, someone came here, dropped off a bag of stuff, sang a song, and left.

I can't use most of the stuff, so I'll be passing it along elsewhere. Maddy loves the zebra-patterned fleece blanket, so I guess that's her present.

General note to anyone who donates to Christmas charities: Take allergies into consideration. Some of what I had to get rid of include chocolates with nuts and a couple of things made of wool (I have a severe wool allergy and can't have physical contact with anything that has even a fraction of wool content).

If chew toy destruction were a profession, my dog would be a handsomely paid surgeon. He's been delicately tearing apart his Christmas chew toy gift since we got it. The toy has two pieces, a shaft inside another shaft and he gingerly picks apart the outermost shaft with his front teeth so he can extract the inner shaft.

Are we doing new years too?

Because: Happy New year ya mugs. May we lose less in this coming decade.
There's a thread for that!
