5 zettabytes of data at Buffdale

So I assume you will be joining me on the Russ Feingold 2016 bandwagon. After all, he was the only Senator brave enough to vote against the Patriot Act shortly after 9/11.
I don't live in WI, but I'll take a look at him and see what else he supports before I get behind him. I don't like getting behind politicians, generally, because they usually end up behind me in the long run.

Not at all. If I have something to hide, I don't use the internet to hide it in. It's a public place.
Your email isn't public...
Read the 4th amendment... is specifically says "papers", as in, letters...

Search function?

Just deleting loads of small text files can take a ******** amount of time and that is on terabyte drives. Now imagine if you had to search them.

I think the gubbamint has some pretty serious computing capability... much more than my gmail account on my PC, for example.
They also have people whose job it is to know how to do it fast, and don't have other missions...

If there is anything in your e-mail that is worth protecting, you should encrypt it anyway. If you use gmail, there is already someone who has access to all your e-mails.

Fine. If you trust your government. I don't trust mine to do any more than exactly as they please.

Encryption may be a waste of time. Isn't there a limit on the number of bits you can use in the RSA code? Explicitly so that the government can decrypt it if they think fit.

If you use a strong enough password, it's almost certain that nobody will be able to decrypt it within your lifetime barring the implementation of large-scale quantum computation.

Absolutely. Which is why I understood the US government had put a limit on the size of the password (actually a prime number for the public key) that can be made available legally. How they tell you're using one, or enforce the limit, I wouldn't know. And maybe I'm just writing random nonsense, anyway.

Was this created before or after I posted about it MC?

I didn't see it... but I was in a paranoid rage and could have missed an aircraft carrier flying by my office window.

I beat you by 12 hours or so. Out the margin of error (time zones).

Try harder.

If you've got nthing to hide, this shouldn't worry you. /busheratalkingpoint

If you've go something to hide, you've got 5 zettabytes to hide it in. /obamaeratalkingpoint

At least with a Bush administration you were safe due to total government incompetence, just look at the 9-11 hijackers that killed thousand of US citizens .... oh wait !

There is little doubt that the NSA can decrypt any publicly available encryption mechanism, as can a handful of other countries with similar capabilities. If they couldn't do so they would have outlawed the encryption algorithms, as they did in the past when they had far less capabilities.

That said, it would wreak havok on their snooping efforts if everybody started using 512 bit keys for all their electronic correspondence. They would need vastly more computing power to keep up. But how many people are willing to spend fairly long periods of time encrypting every email message just to piss them off?

I don't think you know how computers work.

Searching zettabytes at random would take, what, days? Months? Years? If you're just looking for one string or byte stream. If you want to look for some other thing, you have to start the process all over again. Sorting this data would take years.

I don't think you know... actually... or at least, you are completely "misunderestimating" them.
First, their processors are light years beyond yours.
Second, their algorithms at the NSA are pretty sophisticated...
Third, they perhaps categorize them in some manner to increase accessibility (this part is a guess, and probably isn't right, but if it is, it is done via a program doing it for them based on key word hits, for example... not some guy looking at each e-mail's subject line).

Let me ask you this...
If they just can't possibly find the e-mails in under a decade's time... WHY are they storing them?

Let me ask you this.
If Bush administration had nothing to hide why did it Accidentally delete 3 million emails, and then Accidentally delete the backups and then Accidentally delete the mail server copies instead of storing them as law requires ?

Wow! That was out of left field!!!
I'm sorry, when did we start talking about this exactly?
And, when did I say they had nothing to hide?

I imagine ALL administrations have things to hide. Obama's included, seeing as he's actually become the least transparent president according to many.

You mean like Refusing to testify under oath and in public to the 9-11 commission after the deaths of thousand of US citizens ?

Why are Republicans suddenly so alarmed at the very same issues they were totally and completely ok with under a Republican President ? Why was it ok for a Republican president to detain people indefinately and Democrates were idiots for try to give them rights such fair trial and geneva convetion rights ?

Why are you ok with the Patriot Act under Bush and not under Obama ?

Wow! Cool your jets rocket!
You are completely off base here.
1) I don't even know what you are talking about with the 9/11 Commission
2) Because some Republicans, like some Democrats, are hypocritical partisan hacks
3) It isn't ok to detain people *indefinitely, Obama signed that into law
4) The Democrats were trying to give them "CIVIL" trials, which are totally different
5) I am not ok with the Patriot Act under Bush nor Obama
6) I am not a Republican, I'm registered "independent" and voted for the Green Party

So, does that answer all your questions?

1) Then stop complaining about lack of transparancy in the Obama Administration. This administration has been one of the most transparent.

2) Let me correct you, Republicans created, signed and enable this to happen all the while blocking democrates trying to put to make the patriot act more transparent, more accountable. Example would be Kennedy being put on the "no fly list"

3) /facepalm

4) Democrates also gave detainees geneva convention rights which Republicans blocked. Between the undeclared war, the mess that was Gitmo with its what 76% release rate ? Obama is trying to clean up the mess left behind. Example. closing up Bush "secret" overseas prisons.

5) You do know that Obama had to fight tooth and nail against Republicans to water down the patriot act and make it more transparent right ?

6) Good on you. Though if you had voted for Gore at least we wouldnt be cleaning up Bush mess and we would have gotten more movement on the Global warming and other enviromental issues.
