A Brave New World Part 2

Maybe EQ got the swine flu...

No swine flu here. Working diligently on the update at the moment. It's just been a busy few days (or week rather). I apologize for not making my own deadline, but we will have an update tonight or I'll have to murder a few homeless people to assuage my conscience. While this update is small in the number of articles, we have a couple of big events. Still hoping that we can wrap up all these leftover issues from the Great War in time for a nice, quiet 1920s.

Global News Report

RECESSION RECEDING. Berlin, German Empire. To the world as a whole it seems as though the economic situation has at last begun to recover. An increase in shipping production and various economic programs seem to have taken hold within the global community. Some limited credit can also be granted to booming war industries and new governments. Despite the overall global growth, some nations have continued to stagnate or decline in economic power, as some countries are forced to give up their old markets. One economist has declared that the Great Recession has at last come to a close. Below is the listed economic changes from this year.

OLYMPICS REPORT. Copenhagen, Danish Empire. The events in this year’s Olympics were clearly dominated by teams from the Republic of New England, though the Russian Imperial Federation and German Empire managed to secure significant portions of the overall points and medals. Some debate emerged this year over the possibility of adding women’s games to the Olympics, but they were promptly shot down by representatives from a large number of nations. In other news, the committee to determine locations for future Olympics have at last come to a conclusion of the location for the 1924 Olympic Games. The city of Moscow in the Russian Imperial Federation has been selected as the obvious choice for the games, in a country with extensive stability and power. The unstable situation of the world was the prime reason for the choice, as the committee is quite sure that Moscow will remain stable in eight years. The Olympic committee made a stunning announcement, declaring the onset of a new section of the Olympic Games. Auto Racing will now be considered, including both competitions and time trials upon preset roads or tracks in hosting nations.

North American News Report

UNREST CONTINUES IN LOUISIANA. New Orleans, Empire of Louisiana. Unorganized violence seems to be the name of the game in the Empire of Louisiana over the course of the year. Riots over prices and unemployment have been sparked in almost every major city, as more blacks arrive from Georgia and Tennessee fleeing the growing influence of the Ku Klux Klan. Most of these people have wound up in the cities along the Mississippi River, such as Saint Louis and New Orleans, and racial tensions have begun to emerge as these new arrivals threaten to destabilize the job market. Several anarchist bombings have also been reported throughout the year, though so far no important political figures have been assassinated.

PENNSYLVANIAN ELECTIONS. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The revival of the Pennsylvanian economy was on the voters’ minds in this year’s elections. The Socialist Party has taken full credit for the revival and has promised to maintain Pennsylvania’s stability and economic and military strength. The Socialist government has also announced that they no longer recognize the Socialist Cooperative Group as a legitimate economic organization. The government has issued a statement declaring that body to be nothing more than a course for a new type of imperialism based out of Rio de Janeiro and Mexico City. (+2 Stability)

METIS PASS NEW LAWS FOR WORKER PROTECTION. Winnipeg, Metis Republic. In a piece of controversial legislature, the Metis government has managed to pass a series of laws acknowledging the rights of the unions within the nation. These agreements have ascertained rights for the worker as rarely seen in non-socialist states. While some political opponents of the government have accused the president of driving the country in a leftist direction, no one says anything too loudly, just in case. Some believe that this may only be a temporary solution, but for the moment it seems to have resolved most of the instability in the country, perhaps alongside the apparent onset of a global economic recovery. FEED THE PEOPLE PROVED SUCCESS. Fighting Bear City, Commune of the Lakota People. The Lakota Sioux government has initiated and completed a long term series of plans to improve the agricultural development of their nation. The Feed the People program has brought about an astonishing 250% increase in the nation’s produced farm products, promising that no table in the nation will be empty. This year’s surplus has even begun being shipped over new railroads into the Union of Mexico and from there into points in South America, including Chile and La Plata. While the project fell short of its most ambitious goals, the program still far surpassed the pessimistic outlooks of some of its creators. (+1 EP, +1 Stability)

TENNESSEE CIVIL WAR CONCLUDES. Nashville, Tennessee. The white government has at last brought a conclusion to the Tennessee Civil War. The black socialist rebels have been crushed by the standing military. After several brutal years of combat, the rebellion is over, and vicious massacres continue to be reported from within the nation’s borders. Several hundred thousand black residents of the country are believed to have been executed by the Tennessean government, while many more have fled from the gunfire and bloodshed. These refugees have poured into Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, and even Virginia, hoping to escape the brutal slaughters by Tennessee’s government.

Central/South American News Report

EL SALVADOR ELECTIONS. San Salvador, El Salvador. The new nation of El Salvador has held its first elections this year, and a new government has been established. The coalition government quickly dissolved in the wake of the elections, and the Conservative Party has successfully won the dominant share of the seats of the nation’s Congress. The new government has pledged to prevent the spread of socialism and to keep the nation stronger against foreign military threats. (+1 Stability)

HAITI ERUPTS IN FLAMES. Port-au-Prince, Empire of Haiti. Heavy fighting and damages took place across the Empire of Haiti this year as republican dissent erupted into open revolt. Battles erupted in all the various islands of the empire, and through a series of battles, the republican forces managed to secure control Martinique as well as the remainder of the sugar islands. The government responded by declaring a cessation of delivery of food supplies to these islands. Face with starvation and supply the rebels surrendered to the imperialists after a promise of amnesty. Though the rebellion in the empire ended, fighting soon erupted on Hispaniola proper. The rebels have been chased into the mountains where they are believed to have established numerous camps and outposts. Though they have not organized into a political entity, the rebels have issued numerous demands for the abdication of the emperor and the establishment of a new republican government. REFORM IN CHILE. Santiago, Chile. The Chilean government has made a dramatic shift as the economy continues to slide. Advisors from the Socialist Union of South America have been brought in to provide advice on the management of the country and the establishment of a new economic order. This has been extended by an influx of cheap goods produced by the Socialist Cooperative Group, as prices began to be lowered to the point of being affordable by most Chilean citizens. Despite this, the move towards socialism has been heatedly resisted by businesses owners, some who have forcibly refused to sell factories, even if they have not turned a profit. Corporate heads have denounced the presence of socialists within the country and have pledged to resist the new government’s policies at every turn.

European News Report

UNREST FORCES CHANGE IN BOHEMIA. Prague, Bohemia. Republican unrest in the nation of Bohemia reached an all-time high this year, sparking the establishment of barricades throughout the whole of Prague. Though the military was called in to restore order, leading military officers suggested the establishment of some sort of legislative body to manage the nation. Even while the army fought the rioters, King Jakob II was soon brought to the negotiating table. A new Bundesrat has been assembled, and elections are to be held next year in the hopes of restoring order and stability to Bohemia. (+1 Stability)

THE TIDES OF REPUBLIC CRASH IN HUNGARY. Budapest, Hungary. The sweeping changes which have been brought to the Balkans by Russian military might have had lasting effects which have drifted into the neighboring nation of Hungary. Republican advocates in this country have espoused the ideals of the newfound democracies which have emerged and have used Russia as a rallying cry for change in Hungary. Vicious riots have broken out in the inner cities, particularly with little to no change in the sad state of economic affairs. The ring leaders have organized and demanded elections immediately for a new legislative government. (-1 Stability)

KAISER OPENS FIRST NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE. Berlin, German Empire. In a move stunning to sports fans across the globe, the Germans have organized the first professional footballer league. The Kaiser attended the first game between Munich and Berlin in a stadium built with his own funds for the Berlin team. Though unofficial leagues have existed for a couple decades in some European nations, this marks the first organized sporting group sponsored and overseen by the government. Some people have rallied in other nations, encouraging the establishment of their own national leagues.

DANISH ELECTIONS. Copenhagen, Danish Empire. The Danish government continues to be dominated by conservative management this year with the success of the Dansk Konservative Folkeparti in this year’s elections. The party met with some light criticism from leftist leaders over the possibility of the North Sea Alliance and the new European Alliance of Nations being not much more than a outlet for German imperialism. The entry of the Danish Empire into the war in the Middle East has rallied some around the critics, though it’s likely the war won’t truly enter into Danish politics until further fighting continues over the course of next year. (-1 Stability)

RUSSIAN ELECTIONS. St. Petersburg, Russian Imperial Federation. Russian elections remained uneventful, as the Federative Party retains full control of the Duma. They have pledged to maintain Russian economic prosperity and isolation from the rest of the world. The stabilization of the Balkans played into the Federative Party’s campaign, as the military victories are heralded as a symbol of the resolve of the Russian people. The rising political issue has been the division and collapse of any organized conservative, Orthodox political movement. Some scattered remaining leaders in the conservative part of the Duma have issued warnings of the unity of Christianity in Russia against the rising threat of Islamic revival as seen with the jihad in the Ottoman Empire. (+1 Stability)

PORTUGUESE ELECTIONS. Lisbon, Portugal. Foreign policy has dominated the elections for the legislative branch of the Portuguese government this year. The affair in the Celtic Union raised concerns for the Portuguese populace, highly linked in trade and diplomatic relations since the nineteenth century. The Moderate Party was torn apart by the Liberal Party which argued for greater intervention to restore stability to the British Islands. The Liberal Party has managed to secure full control of the Portuguese Parliament, and have promised an even more active course to assist the Celts as fighting rages in Scotland and Ireland. (+1 Stability)

FRENCH CIVIL WAR COMES TO A CLOSE. Paris, France. The French Civil War has at last been brought to and end in a epic battle south of Paris. The bulk of the Lisists and socialist armies clashed in a major fight, led by the head of the socialist party. The party head was killed and the socialist army was routed in an open battle of maneuver. Italian forces assisted in the mopping up efforts, which included several pitched battles against the Belgian army as they retreated northeast. The Belgians have rallied within their own borders, retaining control of some coastal towns in order to construct a new southerly defensive line in preparation for a probable French invasion.
Casualty List[/i]
Socialist France: Destroyed
Belgium: 29 Infantry Brigades, 5 Tank Brigades
Lisist France: 34 Infantry Brigades, 12 Artillery Brigades, 2 Armored Car Brigades, 4 Tank Brigades
Italy: 12 Infantry Brigades, 2 Tank Brigades

RUSSIA OPENS BACK DOOR TO IMMIGRATION. St. Petersburg, Russian Imperial Federation. With their success in this year’s elections, the Duma has passed new legislation opening up new opportunities to the poor of Europe, particularly in the German Empire and the Balkans. Russian corporations have been allowed to bring in immigrants to work in factories as well as their families. So far the program has gotten off to a slow start, but the Federative Party has promised to offer new chances at life for the people of Europe.

NETHERLANDS IN TROUBLE. Amsterdam, Republic of the Netherlands. After eight years of seemingly futile conflict in the Middle East and continued growth of German dominion over Dutch affairs, the people have finally reached their breaking point. Given orders to fire upon protesting crowds, the few troops remaining in the Netherlands proper soon succumbed or joined the mobs. Armed with military equipment the mob soon seized power. The monarch and his family have dropped off the map, and no sources are completely sure of their fate. A note from a disheveled courier reached the Kaiser of Germany, proclaiming that the king was executed by the dissidents and that by the recent marriage between the two houses, the German Kaiser was the rightful ruler of the Netherlands. This notice has reached the press and has had a resonating effect throughout the Dutch Empire. The colonies, though not particularly fond of the republican regime, have banded with Amsterdam in the hopes of preserving the empire. A new government has yet to be structured, but a vote is said to be held for the House as of next year. The remaining military and some locally assembled militias have been assembled to protect the Dutch border from German invasion, while the army has been recalled from Arabia and the Ottoman Empire, though some troops remain detained in German and Danish camps in the Middle East.

African/Middle Eastern News Report

A NEW JIHAD. Baku, Russian Imperial Federation. It has been reported by German and Dutch authorities on the front in the Middle East that a disturbing new trend has emerged in the conflict against the Ottoman Empire. Unemployed or religiously driven Muslims from across the Middle East and Africa have rallied to the call of local clerics to join the Ottoman Empire in their fight to reclaim the Holy Land from the German and Dutch invaders. Dutch presence in the cities of Mecca and Medina have outraged the conservative Islamic world and the devout have sent their strongest to fight against the Christians. Some clerics have called Envar Pasha the new Saladin, a hero to destroy the invader. The religious leaders have also denounced the German Empire as a “demonic force” driven to destroy all vestiges of the true faith. Muslims from Tunisia, Russia, Persia, and even as far away as Morocco have been captured by German authorities, leading several military leaders to express private and anonymous concern towards the operation.

RASHID ARABIA GAINS INDEPENDENCE. Riyadh, Rashid Arabia. As the war deteriorates for the European coalition, the former Dutch satellite of Rashid Arabia has established itself as a newly independent regime. They have been recognized as a fully sovereign nation state by the Ottoman Empire as well as by the various European powers prior to this year. The country has proclaimed neutrality in the course of the conflict and has expedited Dutch withdrawal following the domestic crisis which nearly tore their nation apart.

SUEZ WAR. Ankara, Ottoman Empire. The war between the European coalition and the Ottoman Empire has continue to rage without any sign of closure. The troubles in the Netherlands have led to the war being officially recognized to be under German management rather than Dutch for the first time since the war began in 1908. Dutch forces, some having been serving in constant combat for nearly eight years, mutinied against their officers and attempted to head to port for evacuation. These troops were interned by German and freshly arriving Danish soldiers, disarmed after brief skirmishes. The forced use of these troops to hold together the Dutch have accounted for some of the territorial losses, has as Arabian withdrawal from the war. A full account of the troubles involving the Dutch Empire can be read under the European section of this report. The Ottoman Empire launched a fresh offensive with overwhelming amounts of artillery, tanks, and even zeppelin bombers. Face with overwhelming enemy support fire, German soldiers were forced to rely on infantry fighting and isolated combat tactics. As sections of the line collapsed, German forces still managed to inflict devastating casualties upon the assaulting Ottoman forces. Due to the drastically increasing casualty rate, the Ottoman Empire’s forces were forced into stalemate though they managed to retake several previous defensive lines and positions to the south. The Germans continue to hold a strong defensive line and later Ottoman attacks were repulsed as new artillery pieces were brought in, more than capable of smashing Ottoman batteries. In Egypt, the fighting remained negligible for most of the year until Dutch desertions reached a maximum high. The Egyptian forces easily took territory from green and confused Danish troops, though ultimately the arrival of reinforcements prevented further advances. At sea Ottoman submarines have been deployed with increasing efficiency, though the German navy has at last developed a counter to the raids in response to the growing number of attacks. The Germany naval forces have learned to track Ottoman submarines back to their ports and measure the distance of surfacing of the ships. German destroyers have thus been able to managed to sink a large number of Ottoman subs, though only after they had already attacked merchant vessels.
Casualty List
Ottoman Empire: 122 Infantry Brigades, 34 Artillery Brigades, 5 Tank Brigades, 3 Zeppelin Bomber Squadrons, 13 Submarines
Egypt: 27 Infantry Brigades, 11 Artillery Brigades, 3
German Empire: 43 Infantry Brigades, 22 Artillery Brigades, 2 Tank Brigades, 5 Destroyers
Danish Empire: 23 Infantry Brigades, 11 Cavalry Brigades, 1 Tank Brigade
Empire of the Netherlands: 6 Infantry Brigades, Numbers interned listed in stats

WARFARE CONTINUES IN PERSIA. Tehran, Persia. The fighting in Persia, though still brutal, seems to be winding down. The Persian government has recognized the Republic of Baluchestan, granting them full autonomy from Tehran. In exchange the Baluchs have offered and given military support against both Hormogzan and Afghanistan. Thanks to the opening of a second front, the warlord of Hormogzan has been crushed by the united efforts of the republics. Fighting has continued against the Afghanis, who have fallen back into a brutal defensive war in the occupied mountains, occasionally fighting amongst themselves as often as with the enemy.
Casualty List
Persia: 8 Infantry Brigades, 4 Artillery Brigades
Baluchestan:4 Infantry Brigades
Hormogzan: destroyed
Afghanistan: 5 Infantry Brigades

Asian/Pacific News Report

WAR CONTINUES IN CHINA. Zhengzhou, Chinese Empire. The republican forces in China have managed to inflict a major defeat upon the imperial army, driving them back along the entire front. Imperial forces found themselves unable to deal with the overwhelming numbers of the republican forces arrayed against them and soon fell into full retreat. Fortunately, a new front was soon assembled along the river line and the Chinese imperial government has once more rallied the armies to fight the republic. Elsewhere, the fighting has been brought to a standstill once more as Guangxi and republican troops appear to be maintaining an unofficial cease fire. Whether fighting in the south will resume next year or not is so far an unknown.
Casualty List
Republic of China: 109 Infantry Brigades, 4 Artillery Brigades
Chinese Empire: 123 Infantry Brigades, 2 Artillery Brigades

A few quick things. I'm moving to a new house tomorrow, and the internet there is not yet up. I am unsure as of when internet will be reestablished, so I cannot place an exact time for the next update as of yet. If you have complaints or otherwise, please send via PM, don't expect me on AIM. The update will be 24 hours after whatever point I do regain internet, or Saturday, whichever I can do first.

I need someone to e-mail the update to quoo, as I will not be able to. Thanks in advance for whoever does it. Just please make sure that only one of you sends him the update, that way he isnt flooded with a dozen copies.

@Milarqui: Naughty of you to be taking OOC comments about possible epidemics into account in your orders. Perhaps we’ll have to punish you for that.

You have already punished me enough, no? My army was better than the Egyptians and they were smashed, and I have yet to recover my economy from the losses of the recession. Also, considering that 1918 is behind the corner, and 1918 had the Spanish Flu, I suppose that I have a right to be concerned.

How do you know what 1918 had when its 1916? Looks like we got some Nostradamus wanna-be over here.

Your combined efforts have prevented the creation of a new communist state in Europe. We congratulate you whole-heartedly, and will be more than willing to assist you with any movement made against the Belgians. Illegal/violent socialism (Communism in Germany's eyes) must be eradicated from our continent.

To Louisiana
From Virginia

The unrest in your northern provinces are of great concern to Virginia. Would Louisiana object to an international force comprising of Virginians, Georgians, and Texans entering the region and stabilizing/stamping out the socialist uprisings? This force would of course abide by all rules and laws of the Louisianan government and would coordinate with any Louisianan forces.

CC: Sweden, Italy

But of course, we did only what is right and proper for a true Nation to do. We fought not just against Communism, but for our People, our Homeland, and our God. We would gladly smash a socialist bastion again in a moment, and it may be in our mutual interest to lock-down the stronghold of socialism in Europe.

We have noted that the Dutch have recently suffered at the hands of illegitimate pretenders. Naturally this impericide cannot go unanswered - even in the heat of the revolution, we did not allow our King to perish. Note, however, that this was the desire of the socialists of Calais.

Note further that the Belgians have for long had no king, and are the strongest and most violent socialist scourgehold in all of Europe.

The trend displayed in the Netherlands cannot be enheartening to any member of the Anti-Communist Commission.

That is why we hereby declare a crusade against the pretender governments of the Lowlands, and invite Germany to join with us to smash these radical agitators. The Belgians have shown no reserve, and the Dutch are on their heels. We cannot allow them to continue the path that will destroy all of Europe and ultimately our respective homelands.

To: The People of the World

All are invited to visit us and witness the miracle socialism. Come see the miracle on the prairie, where railroads and a new city were constructed from scratch. Through thee collective power of socialism new farming cooperatives were organized to take advantage of modern farming techniques. Through sheer will power we increased our agricultural output by 250 percent. We challenge any capitalist power to match this feat.

From Italy
To France

We agree that socialism must be guarded against at every turn lest our glorious nations fall. But we would like to point out that there is another way aside from monarchs to avoid socialism. A well run, respectable, and true republic can also avoid the insanity of the communists. Provided safeguards are put in place from the beginning.

To The Lakota People

Few nations need to increase their agriculture so much as the infrastructure is already there. Relying on socialism will lead to ruin.
