China has fallen horribly behind the West in technology. What possible benefits could one get from sponsoring you, besides angering the rest of the west?

I second this post. Britain isn't just going to say, off-the-bat: "Sure, China! We'll turn you into a potential rival in exchange for some exclusive trading rights which are essentially moot anyway in the age of spheres of influence!"
But whatever.
Well, OOC, another way to view this is the British are finding a new way to force China into its orbit. I'm sure if Azale gets out of line, the British will slap him down. Besides the rest of you can supply the Chinese opium needs now that the druggies have had their supplies cut off. All ya need is some opium.

OOC: It may not exactly be OTL but isnt the whole point of these games not to follow OTL? To be honest i dont actually know how the opium war ended, but lets just say in this timeline Britains leader decided on a whim that drugs were bad, i mean we lost the war of independance worse than we actually did, we arent too keen to jump into a war over a flower.
OOC: sorry for possible double post. In regards to the slave trade Britain outlawed that in 1807 so it should be outlawed... The act that outlaws slavery altogether wasnt passed until 1833 though so i suppose some britons could own a slave or two.. maybe
