All aboard the hype train!

Think of the benefits of low graphics. It could well mean that the graphics are more accessible to the community to change. Blue Marble for Civ6 could do wonders. It also possibly opens up a whole new world of 3D building creation. It could mean that they go full 3D so that the maps are fully rotate-able, zoom-able and fast. If it is 64 bit (is it?) that means the possibility of ultra huge maps and almost infinite arrays of moddable unit and building models for those with beefy systems. If they provide leaderscreen creation tools, modders could make their own professional looking leader screens that blend with the theme of the game.

In terms of graphics, civ 5 was pretty low in terms of moddability - why should I be optimistic this is something that can be changed by modders for Civ 6 without some sort of announcement / proof that it can be done?

Games have to move forward. We wanted graphics that improved upon the existing ones, that were more impressive and wow'ed us more. We never asked for a stylistic change.

Even if there's more moddability in civ 6 for graphics (which i'm skeptical of), graphic modders would still have a lot of work to turn the cartoon graphics into something more realistic. And regarding leaders, it's essencially impossible for casual modders to come up with something like civ 5's (from scratch), let alone something that is better.

First thought when seeing the pics: "Jee, so gorgeous!"

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

All we seen are pictures guys, I can't be certain about Civ 6 unless we get some sneak peek with some audio. :)

It seems like my dreams of seeing next-gen leader scenes that push the envelope even further has been flushed down the toilet...

I think that they shouldn't put money in leader screens which are not important at all, and it's hard to make them properly. I would be more satisfied to have nice 2d screens but many more civs and features.

The graphical style has a lot of advantages for them (GPU cost, easier to produce good 3D models, etc.) , going for a "low poly" style is not a bad choice, and it can actually look quite good. There is plenty of examples of low "poly graphics" out there.
This brings the final result closer to most tabletop games. This choice makes a lot of sense (ina business and design standpoint), I probably would have done the same thing at their place ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The revealed features look solid, but wait and see. I'm really afraid about the AI, as usual. My hope is that the new engine forced them to redo some work on the AI (but the Civ team is known to reuse old pieces of codes everywhere, so ...)

A much more detailed interview on the game: http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/05...ts-itself-city-building-science-and-diplomacy

Ed Beach and Dennis Shirk talking about the trailer and some of the changes and returning features: http://www.ign.com/videos/2016/05/12/civilization-6-developer-rewind-theater-ign-first

All in all, pretty surprising - actual journalism from IGN xD.

The new districts and science systems sound awesome. It plays into my own strategy fairly well, wanting a coastal military city and a core of cities I use for science, culture, and wealth.

The diplomacy system and interactions with the AI sounds cool too. Ancient and classical era seems like it will be very violent and over time, diplomacy becomes more important, formalizing declarations of war rather than just attacking neighbors. There's a cool quote about Teddy Roosevelt that they said was a succinct description of Civ 6's gradual diplomatic evolution.

I guess you aren't that big on immersion then. I thought the leader screens were one of the best things about Civ 5.

I'm into immersion with other optional features. I'd rather have less impressive leaders and get back the palace creation/throne room, leaders looking different regarding on era (loved that from Civ 3), and even have some new "immersive" features like more realistic road intersections + changes through the eras.

Worth mentioning that considering Civ 5 is one of the top-sellers on steam for years, Firaxis probably has enough resources to hire a third party exclusively to make leader screens.

It's more about money and less about time allocation.

Out of curiosity how does the Civ 6 idea of earlier eras being more violent leading to a gradual diplomatic bias translate into the current diplomacy system?

Specifically is it possible to make the AI more aggressive in the earlier game but not in the later eras or is it a global modifier?

Probably like All War with every civilization until a technology like diplomacy is established to declare peace and such. So, everybody is considered barbarians to all.

Probably the same way they make religion matter a little more in the early game via the era modifier in Civ 5.

Whenever I start a new game for the first time, the very first thing is to go to the option menu and disable the music.

As they say, it takes all kinds.

Why do you guys think this looks low poly? Look at the buildings, they have much more detail than Civ 5 (which is nothing to write home about), as do the ships.
