The religious situation in England in the early seventeenth was an odd one. With all technicality, King James I was not only the Head of State, but also the head of the Chruch of England. The ministers and lords were all Protestant CoE as Henry VIII kindly persuaded their forebears to be. But in villages up and down the country, Catholic Churches still held sway.

At the root of the problem is that Henry VIII was still Catholic, and he didn't make any radical changes to common man's access to the Church. As such, the somewhat garish Catholic Churches remained. This was not helped by the short, ineffective rule of Edward VI and the Catholic Mary. Elizibeth tried to convert people via the incetive of taxing Catholics. Still, the Catholic faith remained in the hearts of the people.

That is why, when Elizibeth failed to produce the expected son to be a heir, the other rulers of the country scrambled to find a Protestant replacement. They found it in King James VI of Scotland, a cousin. If some imposter had not appeared after the coronation, a lot of things could have been averted.

However, the CoE is not the only thing to come out of the schism in the Church. Calvinists, of course, as well as many other sects.

This religious plurality is something most Englishmen care little about. As long as your 'an okay bloke', people don't usually care what language your priest talks, be Latin, English or Tongues. And most intelligent people realise that, in the end, it's all worshipping Christ, so we're all going to Heaven anyway. Unlike those godless heathens in the Americas.

Me trying to figure out why the religion is listed as 'Catholic' for England.

Padishah Ahmet I sat in the royal gardens surrounded by various Kaymakams, Khedives, Pashas, and even some Effendi. They were continuing the discussion from the previous day regarding the running of the vast Ottoman Empire.

"Padishah, Adal has agreed to become our vassal, shall we now support them directly?" asked Pasha Ismaael Nawaz, he was from a province in Egypt the Padishah tried to recall which one, but couldn't.

"We were going to support them anyway. Make sure the guard force is deployed to Adal and tell them to treat the Khorasans lightly. Even if they are heretics, at least they are Islamic. We do not want to start trouble with them. We have decreed that they can do as they will with the Swahili, but Adal is ours. This is fair. Also let them know that we are willing to support trade with them and through them the markets of the Chinese are opened to us and through us the markets of the Europeans are open to them." Padishah Ahmet I ended this statement with a quick sweep of his right hand across his body. An odd habit he had picked up letting his advsors know the decision was final and they were to move onto the next topic. Pasha Ismaael Nawaz bowed his head and stepped back so another could address the Padishah.

Effendi Abdullah Ahmed-Shoiab stepped forward and bowing address his Padishah. "Padishah, we are continuing to try and grow our treasury through multiple efforts and so far it has not shwon appreciable results. We have neither lost nor gained." The Effendi seemed worried that this news might upset the Padishah, but not much as unlike his grandfather the Padishah did not kill messengers, or for that matter he generally tried not to kill people out of anger without cause.

Padishah stopped for a moment to glance at his favorite trees in the garden, a massive Fig tree said to have been planted by the his great great grandfather personally as a tribute to Allah giving him an heir after years of trying. The Effendi had to stop short to avoid bumping into the padishah as they had been walking at a brisk pace and the stop was sudden. Padishah Ahmet I picked one of the newly ripened figs and slowly removed a small dagger from his belt and started peeling the fig.

"I would not worry about it so much, we are already a very rich Empire and will continue to be so, provided we at least keep trying to improve. I will not tolerate complacency!" he said the last so strongly he slipped and cut into the fig instead of removing the last of the skin alone. He took a deep breath and continued. "I will not complain much of failure as long as it is an attempt to move forward and as long as it is not a constant theme. Continue in your efforts, I feel they will work out in the end." Again the quick hand motion and the Effendi stepped back after bowing.

Kaymakam Saabir Abdul-Qadir stepped forward and bowed his head. The Padishah had no trouble remembering him, it was one of his cousins and a trusted advisor. "Padishah what about Ethiopia we have recieved word that they will not bow to the Empire."

"Make them see the error of their ways, we have given them two chances to simply become our vassal and otherwise carry on with their lives, but they refuse. Now we shall make the terms much harsher and we are going to keep that coastline. Send General Khair Armanjani to lead the effort." The Padishah motioned with his hand and then ate his fig.

Padishah looked up at the sky and saw the sun was beginning to set as it always did. And just like it set it would rise. Empires were the same way, but he was determined to keep the Ottoman Empire in the sky, as close to its zenith as possible. An Imam was approaching the entourage and the Padishah waived him away he knew what he wanted to discuss, but it was time to go and eat. Affairs of state were done for the day barring any emergencies.

Padishah Ahmet I glanced once more at the setting sun and promised he would avoid that out come at all costs. The steps his father had taken he would continue and build upon, leaving his son the most glorious Empire ever seen on the face of the Earth.

This is all based on a game of EU3. Obviously things didn't happen in the game as happened in real life. England remained Catholic and never lost the title Defender of the Faith.

Spain currently has a defense treaty with Portugal, and a separate defense pact with Savoy and Tirol. They're currently researching naval technology. And France captured that sometime I guess I never noticed, but it was sometime in the last 120 years. Otherwise Spain has gone out and conquered/colonized parts of the New World and Africa. Its been kind of neutral, but you can obviously change that.
