Hmm but you never hear about reporters getting kidnapped in Eritrea, wonder why it's so bad.

Monaco? Andorra?

I mean not counting mini-states.

Spoiler :

Poor Lebanon.

This is what you get when you allow terrorists to turn a quarter of your country into their stronghold and then let them attack a neighbouring country. I still think Lebanon was actually lucky. Israel should have reoccupied the south and get rid of Hezbollah.

Shockingly, though, they're 2nd last in Press Freedom, not last. Eritrea is even worse, according to the rankings.

I am guessing they don't have any journalists at all.

. A lot of people flee either through Sudan through the Sahara Dessert (where many, many people die crossing) or over the Red Sea. Sometimes, the boats capsize, leaving lots of teenagers to drown in the middle of the ocean.

if they get caught in Algeria, they get sent back to Eritrea. Nastiness ensues.

He's big in Sweden.

Me too. Two of my uncles died way before I was born, fighting in that war.

The reason for this paranoia (at least in the eyes of the "average Eritrean" who's pro-government - I suspect that it could just be power hunger on some of the politicians' part) is that Eritrea has gotten screwed over several times. The world stood by as Ethiopia dissolved the Eritrean parliament, thereby breaking deal set up by the UN to have an autonomous Eritrea within a federation with Ethiopia.

Then, when independence movements tried to free Eritrea, both the USA (during the rule of the Emperor) and the Soviets (during the Derg) helped Ethiopia.

I hope you people help me complete this map

Ukraine should be blue I think, and the Phillipenes red, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front I think counts as a fairly militralized secessionist movement.

Great map :goodjob: Maybe you should define the categories more precisely to avoid confusion and misinterpretation.

EDIT: Serbia shouldn't be red if you count Kosovo as a separate political entity.

Columbia should be red, and Peru as well?

Does the FARC count as a secessionist movement?

Why should it? AFAIK they want to overthrow the government and rule the country, not break off.

Kyrgyzstan should be orange...mebbe red. Haven't looked much into the riots they've been having...

I think that what's happening in Kyrgyzstan is ethnic cleansing, not secessionism proper, but if anyone with a better knowledge of what's going on can correct me, do it please.

The IRA are active in Ireland as well, I believe.

There's certainly a movement (or several) but not a strong one. So, orange, perhaps?

Edit: also, just noticed, the Comoros should be red. So should India.

The National Liberation Front of Corsica behaves like ETA, so I think that it should be orange just like Spain.

No no. It seems like they are violent.

The FLNC has continued its attacks into the twenty-first century, although at a much reduced tempo when compared with the late 70s.[23] Many FLNC bombs failed to detonate or attacks had to be aborted. Nevertheless the FLNC did manage to carry out a number of successful attacks including the 2002 bombing of a military barracks in Lumio which injured a number of gendarmes, bomb attacks against a number of hotels in Marseille in 2004 and rocket attacks against a number of barracks in 2007.

In 2009 it carried out a car bomb attack against a barracks in Vescovato. The FLNC also claimed that all the different factions had reunified. During the early 2000s the FLNC had been divided into the FLNC-UC, the FLNC-1976, and the FLNC-October 22

ETA did similar actions in the past too, so I think that France goes to orange.

Isn't there a Tuareg secessionist movement in Algeria?

According to my informations it's only active in Niger.

It's hard to define categories given the disparity of these movements. And no, I still count Kosovo as part of Serbia because it doesn't have the recognition of the international community.
