Altered Maps XIV: Cartographical Consistency

For that matter, why are we discussing neo-pagans? We're currently discussing which denomination of Christianity was the most terrible. Currently, Catholics win by genociding everything in North/South America, but I'm sure the Protestants can think of something equally terrible.

Nope. For your information, North America was colonized primarily by Protestants.

Catholics who colonized South America mixed with the locals, which is why the continent is Mestizo today.

Those who colonized North America were more racist and did not mix with the locals so much.

but I'm sure the Protestants can think of something equally terrible.

Hitler and his Nazi Party were voted to power and supported largely by German Protestants (as the map also shows).

German Catholics opposed them. Which is why a good amount of German Catholic priests were executed by the Nazis.

The better thing is, there's still plenty of space to invade/annex so, we can keep up the statistic going. Unfortunately, we can't determine America's exact religion, so we'll pray for a resurgent space colonist alien-slaying Spain, or Britain deciding to pull of a Earth To Alpha Centauri business.

The USA was around 80% Protestant by the end of the Indian Wars:

Though I'm not sure if those early 1900s numbers are reliable (such a "jump" of Catholics?).

Irish and Italian immigration perhaps?

Wasn't Irish immigration significant already in the 19th century?

Catholics in the USA would be Irish, Polish, Italian and some German too (more recently also Mexicans).

According to data from this book, Poles were 2,5% of US population already in 1900 (though some of them were Protestants):

Large-scale Irish immigration AFAIK started already after 1845 (the Great Famine).

Here is the data on religions in the USA today:

From another source I have this:

"Total U.S. population in 1900 was 76 million, of whom 12 million Roman Catholics."

By comparison the number of Jews was 1,5 million (according to wikipedia):

In 1900 there were 1.5 million Americans Jews

This would leave some 61 - 62 million for Protestants (so 80,2% - 81,6%), assuming 0,5 - 1,5 million for "others" (incl. Orthodox, etc.).

So yes, I guess that "around 80%" is a good enough estimation. Perhaps it was slightly more than 80% indeed.

I checked census data too, but apparently American population censuses did not ask about religion at that time (I'm surprised).

What the maps and statistics don't show is that in many cases, Protestant=Liberal. This was certainly true in pre-WW2 Germany, which was the powerhouse of theological and cultural liberalism. German Roman Catholics were less likely to be liberal because it was quite literally anathema until Vatican II and because the Kulturkampf had left them feeling like a beleaguered minority rather than part of the German mainstream. Some Conservative Protestants opposed the Nazis just as some conservative Roman Catholics did, but the former were a tiny minority and very disorganised.

Domen, your discussion of the US in 1900 assumes everyone was religious. A serious analysis has to consider degrees of religiosity too.

Domen, your discussion of the US in 1900 assumes everyone was religious.

At that time pretty much everyone was religious (member of some church), even if they were not practicing regularly.

A serious analysis has to consider degrees of religiosity too.

Degrees of religiosity are irrelevant if this data is meant for demographic research, not for sociological research.

But in the first link I provided (in post #227) there is also info about degrees of religiosity, if you are interested.

I just want to point out that Kennedy was 100% American! He just happened to have people in his family tree who came from Ireland.

NO - he was definitely 100% human!: :)

When I asked Mr Samuel Jones, long-standing mayor of the city of Toledo, how many Poles does he have in his city? At first he answered to me: "In my city I don't know any Poles, or Germans, or French - I know only Americans". And then I replied to that: "Mr Mayor, and I don't know not only any Poles, Germans, French, I don't even know any Americans - I know only humans!" Mr Jones did not reply to this, but instead without any further deliberation, he issued the following written declaration, that in Toledo there live over 14,000 Poles.

I would hardly call Germans of the time as being Christian with the many frankly anti-biblical ideas of the time. There was a small minority of protestants who opposed the Nazi regime an they paid with their lives, but too many were already long gone.
