So this is in the plans.. 8 day long hike to the top of the world's tallest freestanding mountain! aka the tallest mountain in Africa

We are not using the operator watermarked on this map. I found a good local operator that is cheaper than international operators, and will leave a better mark on the local economy and people.

4 or 5 of us will be climbing Kilimanjaro, probably in 2020! It's 200 metres higher than the highest point we got to on the Everest Basecamp Trek

There are 7 routes to the summit, after doing some research I picked out the route that will 1. Give us the best chance of success to reach the summit and 2. Has the best scenic views. It's a bit more expensive but based on what I've read this is the way to go. The first couple days are more difficult than on some other routes, but it helps you acclimatize better and the success rate for the trail is 95%+ On some other trails the success rate is as low as 30% (would you believe that the route with the 30% success rate is known as the "easiest" route?)

As you can see on the map, the trail takes you through a lot of different biomes. This is one of the reasons why it's so scenic. It is also a trail that offers potential wildlife views on the first couple days. Only one other trail to the top provides wildlife viewing options, and that one starts on the northern side in Kenya.

So far there are 4-5 of us going, probably 4. Same guys I did EBT with plus another friend.. plus the maybe friend who will be in teacher's college at the time and might not be able to do it (but we're probably going in August so maybe)

We are also planning a 3 day long safari after the hike is done, assuming the costs fit within our budgets. I am also looking to fly to Zanzibar, which is nearby, and seems to have INCREDIBLE beaches.

Anyway, I am super excited about this trip and am now in full trip planning mode. If anyone is going to be in Zanzibar in August of 2020 let's meet up on the beach

2020? Can't make it dude, my hiking trip in Africa is scheduled for 2021. Next time, maybe...

I don't like mountains. I am a sea person :)

Then you must know that old Greek saying about man and the sea.
Something like
You are either dead, or ashore and alive, or somewhere in between on sea

I mainly like seeing new things, I think. I live where it's flat, so when I'm hiking around mountains it feels like I'm a fantasy land. Same thing with tropical beaches though, I definitely do love hanging out by the water

According to an ancient proverb, the three evils are fire, woman, and sea :)

Just guessing that that woman and the sea were thought to be equally unfaithfull ?

I learned that other one in my Tirocinium Graecum.
Only the Earth was faithful.

That sounds so good.

Hiking up he Killimanjaro sounds indeed interesting, but definitely cannot plan that far ahead ^^.

We're not setting anything in stone until it's time to book the flights (3-6 months before the trip happens). In theory we could book the flight about a year in advance, but it's usually better to wait longer if you want a good deal

Starting planning for now so everybody involved knows how much everything will cost and what exactly is involved

Further proof that Scots are all actually aliens.

The Peruvian part of this map is interesting in that Inca Kola is the most popular drink there. It's interesting because while Coca-Cola is (finally) part owner of that drink, they only own the Inca Kola trademark outside of Peru. (i.e. they do not own the trademark in Peru, the British family that started the company in 1935 does)

This has partially something to do with the drink being loved by the locals for some reason. It's a bit of a national icon. I tried it and.. it tastes nothing like what you'd expect a cola to taste. To me it tasted like bubblegum. I did not like it.

That's been posted before :smoke:
