Election of 1880: The American Industrial Age
Republican Party
James G. Blaine, Age 50, Current president. Skilled orator. Strengthened the merit system, cracked down on the railroad strikes, and fought against corruption and prejudice. Lead troops to capture Leningrad and Lithuania from Russia, and wishes to continue the fight until Russia surrenders communism. Wants to consolidate stability after the Finland Conflict by avoiding wars and strengthening diplomatic ties. Wants to focus on expanding American culture through large projects, such as creating the world's tallest skyscraper and expanding the navy.
James A. Garfield, Age 48, Ohio Representative. Skilled orator. Wants to forge alliances with democratic nations to topple authoritarian governments; this includes strengthening the United States navy and focusing on airforce research. Opposes using state funds to increase regional production (hurrying).
Ulysses S. Grant, Age 58, United States military commander. After returning on a trip around the world, he believes he has gained a stronger moral and ethical stance on politics and domestic policies. Wants to end the war with Russia, instead assuming that Russia will eventually collapse from lack of trade. Wants to work hard to strengthen American allies through diplomacy and military intervention, while avoiding war. Wants to extend American influence in untapped areas, such as Asia and the Mediterranean.
John Sherman, Age 57, Ohio Senator, Representative, and Secretary of State. Wants to continue the Finland Conflict until Russia agrees to open up its borders for trade. Wants to lower the science rate back to 50, and use the surplus to stimulate the economy. Wants to strengthen ties with China.
George F. Edmunds, Age 52, Vermont Senator. Wants to continue the Finland Conflict until Russia abandons communism. Wants to grant independence to small American possessions that drain taxpayer's money and only benefit corporations (such as Samoa). Fierce opponent of Blaine's actions breaking up the railroad strike. Wishes to improve working conditions and raise minimum wage.
Elihu B. Washburne, Age 64, Illinois Representative, Secretary of State, and Minister to France. Wants to improve relations by staying neutral in most wars. Wants to invade Poland to liberate it from Russian control, fearing that Russia's influence might expand if Poland is left unchecked. Wants to begin handing over Finland back to Sweden.
Democratic Party
Winfield Scott Hancock, Age 55, Civil War and Finland Conflict General. Want to take a more bold approach against Russia, stating that at this pace Russia will never surrender. Noted for his integrity, his fight against corruption, and dedication to the constitution. Wants to strengthen the American army and navy.
Thomas F. Bayard, Age 52, Delaware Senator. Wants to improve relations with England, and focus on rebuilding Latin America after several regions collapsed and reverted back to Spanish rule. Wants to reinvigorate the ideals of the Monroe Doctrine.
Stephen Johnson Field, Age 64, California Justice and Supreme Court Justice. Wants to expand American imperialism to mainland Asia, including taking Chinese ports and fighting the British for dominance in India.
Greenback Party
James Weaver, Age 47, Iowa Representative. Wants an end to American expansion and the war with Russia, and instead focus on stability and the economy. Supports keeping the science rate at 50 and using the surplus to stimulate the economy.
Benjamin Butler, Age 62, Massachusetts Governor, Senator, and Representative. Famous for his donations through the church and his protection of runaway slaves. Wants to continue the war with Russia, stating that history will not take withdrawal from this war kindly as this is a moral and ethical war. Wants to expand American culture and ensure basic American happiness, through happiness, health, and protection. Wants to grant independence to American possessions that only benefit corporations, such as Samoa.
Prohibition Party
Neal S. Dow, Age 76, Maine politician and activist. Wants to prohibit alcohol, and focus on returning America to Christian morals. Known as the Father of Prohibition. Helped in the Underground Railroad during the Civil War to free slaves. Strongly against protesting, stating that any protest should be put down with a heavy hand. Wants to continue the war against Russia until total surrender.
American Party
John W. Phelps, Age 66, General. Wants to purge Masons from the United States, stating that they are an organization bent on dividing up the nation's morals and wealth for their own benefit. Wants to ban Mormonism, stating that they are a perversion of Christian morals. Wants to use funds to support ethics teachings (protestant missionaries). Ardent abolitionist during the Civil War.

James G. Blaine wins his second term!
While at first it seemed Grant and Blaine would compete closely for the Republican ticket, the Republican Convention's Grant supporters eventually splintered and gave President Blaine their support. The Greenbacks, garnering some Democratic voters, were not able to persuade voters against Blaine in light of the emerging Golden Age.
