Let us toast to one of the best stories S&T has ever seen. It was truly amazing because it was a product of all of the community, not just that of our excellent player and moderator, RT.
As the Earth lit up in nuclear war, Socrates, a quiet, reserved scientist, was hurrying his group into his space ship. "Hurry! We don't have much time!" he anxiously shouted as he rushed the last man inside. Owen Chamberlain, a fellow scientist, walked towards Socrates and extended his hand. "It's been a pleasure," said Chamberlain, "and I wish you all the luck." "There is still room on the ship, if you want to change your mind." "No. My destiny lies in the past. I have a good feeling I can change the past for the better, you know? I have the opportunity to fix the mistakes America made in the past, and allow for a liberated, safe United States."
The two shook hands, and went their separate way. Chamberlain dashed into his time machine and set the time for 120 years in the past. "Tennessee should be safe back then." he noted to himself. Positioning a portrait of Eugene V. Debs above his panels, he looked once more at the collapsing Earth and gave a pithy maxim: "'tis better to know and miss than forget."
"Is everyone here?" shouted Socrates. After a quick count, he ordered everyone to their positions and readied themselves for the stars. "We have a chance to rebuild our civilization. To preserve our history, our passions, and our character." Positioning a portrait of President Lockwood above his panels, he looked once more at the collapsing Earth and gave a pithy maxim: "I have lived, loved, and lamented; but one should not stop in agony. Look towards the stars."
Turning in their chairs, strapping in their belts, and taking deep, sympathetic breaths, they press their buttons. They check their gauges. They pray, look up, and pull their levers. Counting down and preparing for the mysterious future (or past) that awaits them, they say to themselves, "I will write my own history."
