An Inconvenient Judgement...

Mr Gore's assertion that the disappearance of snow on Mt Kilimanjaro was expressly attributable to global warming - the court heard the scientific consensus was that it cannot be established the snow recession is mainly attributable to human-induced climate change.

Maybe I'm being daft, but since when does global warming have to be human induced?

The Earth is going to turn into a fireball anyway after a couple of billion years when our sun exhausts all its hydrogen fuel and starts burning helium, expanding to engulf Mercury and perhaps Venus.

In the US, public educators (especially at the college level) are overwhelmingly liberal. The very few professors/teachers that are conservative will almost all be found in the business department.

These aren't educators, they're governors, they're public councils (in essence) that run individual schools.

While I'm not surprised (politicians trying to explain science generally suck at it and will make errors), a ruling from a judge?
When it comes down to it, most "conservatives" love activist judges and want a nanny state just as much as the liberals.

Uhm....nope. IMHO most conservatives would prefer such things be decided at the state level...not at the fed level.

Ones with actual convictions, yes. But those are a minority in any party. When your getting a court ruling on showing a mainstream scientific film in a classroom, you're advocating a nanny state, and taking advantage of activist judges.

Well, come on...neither should our teachers....ie. government employees...be showing something like Al Gores movie to our kids and passing it off as absolute truth either. If our school teachers dabbled in less political propaganda and stuck to teaching the kids the basics we wouldnt be having such lawsuits.

I don't see why you can't use it in an Earth Science class. Weather Patterns, the Atmosphere etc. ARE the basics there. If this didn't have a name like Al Gore on it, no one would be up in arms over the matter. If they had shown "generic global warming documentary #29" from PBS, no one would even consider ruling on the matter.

Well, it is true that global warming is by design. Though we can debate the intelligence of that design.

So the Illuminate's technology transfer policies are based on Hardin/Ehlrich's essays?

The government has sent the film to all secondary schools in England, and the administrations in Wales and Scotland have done the same.

I don't agree with this centrally planned approach to education.

But if a school wants to show it, it should be up to them;
and it is not the job of a judge to micro manage teachers.

Thats because 'generic global warming documentary #29" wouldnt contain all the political propaganda that Al Gore does.

And I would much prefer Earth Science class use a nice non-partisan textbook to teach such things than bowing down to the alter of GORE.

This must mean Global Warming is false and made up by Al Gore and all the "World is ending" liberals.

No. I actually believe Global warming is indeed happening. However, I hugely disagree with Gore that the world is going to end like he predicts.

Gore could be winning a nobel prize for this peice. The film has won all sorts of awards, and has been used as a teaching aide in schools, from middle school to universities. Honestly, if somebody other than Al Gore had created this film, we wouldn't have these discussions.

The fact that it has been used as a teaching aid is more of an indication of the problem of a majority of left leaning politics in our schools as opposed to the perceived actual benefit of the film.

But I do tend to agree...if someone that was actually much less a hypocrite than Al Gore obviously is had made the film, there probably wouldnt be near as much opposition to it.

And that's what I don't understand.

I mean, really, how does this win a Nobel Peace Prize?

Don't the people who usually win it, you know, do something to try and settle differences between countries or people, or get governments to remove landmines, or at least improve conditions for people who are facing hunger or illness?

This guy made a movie.

Sure, Arafat won one, but that shouldn't lower the standards.

Unless I missed the way this movie has ended the killings in Somalia and Liberia?

That wasn't directed at you, so don't worry, I know you're smart enough to know Global Warming is happening. And I agree, Al Gore is going quite nuttish with his predictions that the World will end, but it's a problem that we should try and find a solution for.

Heh. Well, I for one am kind of the opinion that there isnt really a solution for it. I think its going to happen no matter how many carbon offsets guys like Gore buy for the sole reason that you, me and the guy around the corner and change our lives and our carbon footprint...but the other several billion people around the planet could give a crap.

In other words, inertia is against us. I believe we will simply adapt around it as opposed to actually find any solution for it.

Anyone here still in favor of the Fairness Doctrine? :mischief:

Yeah no problem as long as they teach that during science class the world is flat and the sun orbits the earth. Just to be fair

(though it should be taught in history class. Poltical war between the two popes which produced a wide range of literiture on earth as center of the universe)

Uhm....nope. IMHO most conservatives would prefer such things be decided at the state level...not at the fed level.

The problem with local control of education is that illiterate, ill-educated parents petition the schools to give their kids the same non-education they themselves received.

I mean it's not like Georgians fail more SATs because they are genetically stupider than people from Minnesota. No, those Georgian parents have to work hard to keep their kids stupid. Sometimes it even means putting stickers on textbooks telling kids not to believe what's inside ("Because we shur didn' when AH was a kid!").

Parents shouldn't control education in the sciences, people who work in the sciences should control what's taught.
