Ank12 - A little Furball? - 3CC AW Redux

Playing on PTW.

Early – I move the worker east to the cow. I don’t see any thing that would be worth one turn, so I settle in place. I select IW at max. We’ll have silks on expansion.
Build three warriors and start a circular search.

Late – Find we have coast to the west north and east. So we’ll only have one front. Build a barracks and a spear. I run into an Iroquois warrior. I sell Hiawatha Masonry for Pottery, CB & 7G. I then declare war. Our warrior is soundly defeated on the IBT. The Iroquois warrior is heading towards Persepolis.

After Action – We have several possible city sites. I think our coast city needs to go on Red Dot. It will only have five coastal tiles, plus a cow and two wheat. It has the potential for some good shield production.

Our third city is less obvious. I think I would like to hear grs’ shield analysis before making a decision. My first choice would be blue dot, due to the desert east of green dot. Perhaps the best location maybe 1SW of green dot. That location would have six forest, a BG, plus the two wheat.

I am also including some northern locations, although I am not convinced of the benefit of either northern location.

Uhm... Bugsy, I was gonna play this on vanilla... But did the workers have all those airfield build stuff there? If not, Bede booted PTW also, which means we'll stick to it. If not, Please replay...

I'm downgrading all the time and I wouldn't if they just had ported PTW to the Mac...

But, on the cities Red and 1SW of green would be the best looking. I guess putting a city on the river S of the green dot is too much in the jungle...

@Ankka,

Just booted up 1.29 and when I hit load game it took me right to the directory where I stored all the saves, so the saves I sent up were all 1.29.

When I load it in PTW I get the Build Outpost button, but in C3C I can build airports...

OK, I'll replay it as closely as I can. Sorry about that. I thought it was the same as the last one. Just when I'm getting used to playing ANK games in PTW (and remembering), you throw me a curve.

Sorry about that, but I did note it.

But from now on you can trust they're always 1.29f. :)

*writes on back of hand* All Ankka's games are now 1.29f.

I hope you can do a better job than the previous attempt.
On Monarch you can expand and attack in the late AA, but better only focus on defense till knights and then still expand slowly. Cavs are your friend and until then, take it slow.

Sorry about laughing in the previous thread ...

That's OK Rik. You're forgiven. I think we'll want to take advantage of the Immortal in this one.

Replayed in 1.29F.

The only differences:

1. Made an error in moving over at the eastern coastal site, and found we'll get another cow on expansion. So that makes two cows and two wheat. Talk about a settler factory. You guys sure you want to play this 3CC? :D

2. I only got CB, Pottery & 4G from the Iroquois for Masonry.
Our warrior beat the Iroquois warrior.

3. Since I had an extra warrior, I also got a little more exploring done. Nothing of note.

Ok, thanks, Bugs. Good job there.

Settler factory... no thanks. But it can build the third settler, I guess. And some workers to get the land ASAP into max production.

The position of our worker suggests settling green first...not sure why, but ok, won't waste turns moving him back.

We have killed a wandering Iroquois scout. Settled Pasargadae 1sw of green and have been attacked by 2 Iroquois warriors. The first died to our warrior defending from a hill, the second killed him and flew redlined. Two more purple warriors showed up and we have spotted Iroqouis borders.

Iron working was researched and we started the wheel, which atm will finish in 10 at +/- 0gpt.

I got it and play tonight.

Will try to position is to claim red dot.

Not an overwhelming amount to report. Built some vet warriors in Persepolis and a couple of regs in Pasargadae. Kicked some Iros around, killed four, lost a reg warrior though.

Learned the wheel and found horses...in the first ring of an Iro city (Niagra Falls) and out on the plains to the east. None in our backlines though

Started a task force toward red dot and a settler in Persepolis. City will drop to pop three when settler is done but should still be capable of 2-turn vet warriors.

The scouting warriors have pretty much defined our neighborhood.

Once the wheel came in set research to minimum on Mysticism, nothing invested so I'll let a wiser head pick the research path.

Do we want to build some more spears for a passive-aggressive attack on the Iro. Park outside their capitol and second city and stall their expansion? Niagra Falls is at the very right hand corner of the picture.

We have Iron working... so why aren't we building immortals? The sooner we get them out the more effective they'll be.

But good job, and I like the stall attack... :goodjob:

I've been mulling over RikM's notion of a more passive approach to the warfare in this one and remain undecided. One the one hand it has the advantage of letting us build a higher qualty force for the onslaught, on the other it risks the same situation as we faced in the Celtic 3CC, depending on the more expensive late Middle Ages techs for strength but having an economy that can't support that burden, and having really big opponents on our doorstep.

I think our window of opportunity for the Immortal will come once we have become a monarchy, and can trigger the Golden Age with the Immortals at that point, build lots using the GA cash infusion for rushing them and some cats, then go on the offensive and try to overwhelm the other guys before they get the real nasties like knights and pikes.

I would continue to research up the Monarchy path as quickly as we can afford, and keep building spears for a passive aggressive offensive against the nearby nations. (It would be really nice to deny Hiawatha his Mounties). So by all means hook up the iron but I wouldn't build any Immo's until we can use them to the best effect.

Further analysis (fancy way of saying musing out loud): Looks like the Monarchy path will cost us ~1100 beakers for all the required techs or about 110 turns and with a total income of 13g right now and only 10 in the treasury......it is going to take some serious finagling to get it done.

But I'm confident this "band of brothers" will find a way...

Edit: Opened the save file posted to verify some things and noticed research set at Warrior Code...may want to change that.

I'm not a passive kind of guy. I like the idea of concentrating on one opponent until that opponent is gone. At least early. If we wait too long, our window of opportunity with the immortal will be over. I think we want to go to full immortal production, research to the GL, not worry about a despotic GA, and strike while we have the biggest baddest warrior on the planet. We want to hit the Iroquois early and often. We do not want to see Mounties. They can hurt our immortals.

I second Bugsy. We'll have to wait too long if we don't want a despotic GA. Let's go for it now, or we'll never have an as good chance as we now do.

We don't have the time to wait 100+ turns to get to a Monarchy. We need the GLib and we need to use the Immo's ASAP.

Go for it, andvruss!
