Ank09 - DI1 Redux - 3CC AW

Welcome, grs and andvruss! :D

Nice thing you were so fast, we didn't really suffer from the losses. :)

I like Bugsy's plan on the military. I was thinking of it myself too, when i read that you said the back was weak. :hammer:

I think the roster would look like this:

Sir Bugsy - just played
SesnOfWthr - replaced by grs - UP!
Bede - on deck
Cuivienen - replaced by andvruss
Ankka

REMEMBER: 24h to post a "got it", total 48 to post turnlog and save.

Is everyone ok with this? If not, please note and we'll see what can be done. :)

PreTurn: Lux to 0%. Beijing can now produce 23spt (rider in 3), but we should let it fill its foodbox when possible. Kill a barb horse and find the leader - oops! - move it to safety again. We could use a 4th town I guess. I wonder why we are doing min research and notice it when moving the slider - we need unis - oh we need libraries too.

IBT: Mongols want peace. We lose 1 MDI. (0-1)

1060AD: Move our 30-something worker stack back. We redline many MDIs by bombarding, but kill only 1. Start a chop in search for bg. (1-1)

IBT: Lose a Rider. Kill a MDI. (2-2)

1070AD: Kill 7 MDI. (9-2)

IBT: We find a bg. Beijing can do now 24s/0f, 23s/1f, 23s/1f.

1080AD: Lose 1 warrior (Reckless) and one rider. Kill 3 MDI and 1 legion and take Lugdunum. Army is built and resistance in Lugdunum ends. Research to 100% as I can't figure out what we are saving our gold for. We need cavs. (13-4)

IBT: One rider has to retreat. All civs have invention now. Research to 0%.

1090AD: Kill 2 MDI. (15-4)

IBT: Lose a rider and a sword. Invention - Gunpowder. (15-6)

1100AD: Kill 5 MDI and gain a leader. Shortrush libraries in Beijing and Canton. We will start research ourselves soon I hope. (20-6)

1110AD: Kill 1 spear and capture a settler. Research to 70% - gunpowder in 17 at -2gpt. (21-6)

IBT: A single Indian archer shows.

1120AD: Kill the archer. (22-6)

IBT: New MDIs appear in the west.

1130AD: Lose 1 rider. Kill 1 legion, 1 pike. Raze Byzantium. Kill 3 MDI. (27-7)

1140AD: Kill 2 MDI. Hurry Leo's in Canton. (29-7)

1150AD: Kill 1 MDI. (30-7)

Beijing - rider in 3 turns gaining +2 food
ank09-1150AD-Beijing1.jpg

Shanghai - I'd build the granary for one turn then rush it to shortrush a library and let Shanghai gain 20 shileds for 1 turn. The red forest is replanted.
ank09-1150AD-Shanghai1.jpg

Canton - maxed for commerce this turn. The red forest is replanted.
ank09-1150AD-Canton1.jpg

Eastfront - The hammer already hit. Rome has only 1 or 2 defenders in their towns.
ank09-1150AD-eastfront1.jpg

Westfront - The anvil is almost ready. I placed it a bit further north. I'd finish the secured tiles and relocate spearchuckers' fort 1 north to leave an opening as killing zone. In fact it already is one with all these cats.
ank09-1150AD-westfront1.jpg

A couple of more cats at the anvil and that side is done. Good progress on the hammer side. Let's just make sure that no settler pairs slip through. We only want to conquer this area once more.

Edit - We'll need to chop down those forests in front of the forts for a killing zone.

, grs.

Got it. Will play tomorrow.

Edit - We'll need to chop down those forests in front of the forts for a killing zone.
I would not do that. I found them extremely helpful. When the AI comes with knights, the forests will stop them while our riders can attack into them and retreat in the same turn.

Good job, grs. :goodjob:

Leo's will help us a lot when we start upgrading to cavs when we get MilTrad.

How far is the AI from muskets? We should try and push as hard as possible before they get them. Especially so they can't upgrade. Pillage all saltpeters anywhere near the AI even if it isn't near their borders. We can't let them get muskets.

1150
Romans move 3 MDI into range of Anvil.

1160AD

Cats grind mincemeat and Rider kills heathiest 1-0

Another Mongol pike moves into grinder and Indian longbow and MDI bypass Spearchucker's fortress.

1200AD
Dispatch Mongols and Indians in grinder 17-1

Indians drop off MDI from galley.

1210AD
Indian MDI retreats Rider and kills MDI 17-2

Army of the NE healing up.

Romans move 6 units into grinder - one pike and five MDI.

1220AD
Six Romans eliminated, no casualties 23-2

Kill intruding Indian MDI 24-2

Waste a barb campin the NE.

1230
Healing in the NE and moving riders and workers to the NW

Mongols move three more victims into the grinder.

1240AD

Grinder grinds 27-2

Romans send a settler out of Jerusalem and build Caesarea.

1250AD

Two Riders and an archer from Army Group NE sent to deal with Caesarea and Jerusalem

Spearchucker's fortress is built south of Chittagong and catapults and riders are ready to move forward from there.

Army of the NE still healing up in fortress and a sword and Rider are on the way to join them. Still a few moves out however.

Nobody has made it through the grinder though there is a Mongol galley on the coast.

Haven't seen a knight as we apparently hold the monopoly on Chivalry.

Overall kill ratio 13-1

Read whole SG again to catch gist. I probably still will mess some things up

Preturn- MM Shanghai for more commerce, same production
Bejing rider in 4,. MM 1 square, in 3.
MM Canton for more commerce, and rider in 3 instead of 4, but losing 4fpt. Thats fine because it has full food box anyways.

IBT: Barb hosrse appears south. Bejings culture expands. Expand palace

1255: elite rider attacks spear in Caesera and on my first battle in this sg, i get a leader [party]. Now if we had that luck in DI1...
Raze Caesera. Capture 2 mongol workers. 1 rdier escorts leader back.
Send half slaves back to chop.
I will assume that these fortified slaves here are supposed to stay, so they stay.
Wait NE for reinforcements. I figure we can lose basically 50 gold for 1 turn of gunpowder. due in 1.

IBT: 2 Indian MDI appear
1 mongol LB and MDI as well
We learn gunpowder-chemistry

1260. We have 1 saltpeter hooked up, and that is in the range on a hill of Bejing. Switch to musket in Bejing, other 2 cities after riders completed this turn.
Kill 3 MDI and a LB.
Army kills a pike-settler pair.
0 sci for now.....

IBT: Bejing musket-musket
Shanghai rider-rider
Canton rider-galley

1265: Not much really. I feel my forces too scant to launch any real attack, except with my army, but that is one of the only military units up there ATM

IBT: 3 roman MDI appear in Hammer

1270: Kill 3 roman MDI. Start chemistry on max. 13 turns, -50gpt.

IBT: Canton galley-rider

1275: kill indian LB
Rush the great lighthouse in Canton.

IBT: Whole bunch of barb horsies blocking NE road to core.
Lose 1 slave to them.
Barb killed attack rider

2 roman MDI, 1 LB, 2 indian MDI and 1 spear appear

1290: Barely kill pike in Jeruslaem
Other rider flawlessly kills another pike. 1 LB left.
kill the 2 woundedand 1 LB in Chittagong and raze it
Kill 2 inidan MDI, 2 roman MDI and 1 LB. Generate another leader :D.

IBT: Monogls MDI attacks rider, loses. Another one attacks, forces rider to retreat
Gems colony has been run over
Bejing riots

1295: elite archer kills LB in Jeruslaem. Raz city
Bejing doesnt have a temple :hmm: Change Bejing to temple
Rush cathedral in Shanghai
Kill 2 Mongol MDI

IBT: 5 Mongol MDI attack a stack. kill 4, but lose my second unit, a spear to one. Bejing riots again? What happened? I added a garrison and added a clown. My bad....
Shanghai cathedral-musket
Canton rider-rider

1300: kill a roman spear-settler
refound gem colony
Kill 4 mongol MDI.

Chemistry in 7 at -53gpt. 441 gold. Pressing a little on the Hammer, but not really at the Anvil.
Wow, I was slow and took 2 hours there :D. Save

Nicely played andvruss. Wouldn't it have been nice to get that kind of leader luck back in DI1  We'll kick some serious AI butt in this one though. I don't think we've missed too many wonders. Just the pyramids, and we already turned that into rubble.

I think Beijijng didn't have a temple because it didn't need one? :hmm:

Sir Bugsy - on deck

Ankka - hoping to get the time to play today even though he has an exam on history tomorrow.

REMEMBER: 24h to post a "got it", total 48 to post turnlog and save.

Playing civ won't help out on history? Look you are an expert at Chinese history and how they are conquering the world with just three cities. :D

Bugsy: The problem is that my Mom doesn't believe it. ;)

1300AD [Preturn]: After looking for the save in uploads 8 as the link was uncomplete, leading only to the uploads folder, not the file, and finding the save, launch civ and have a look around.

Notice the grinder's leftest fortress only has 1 musket and that all the troops are one tile N of it... wake the workers standing there and build thefortress, bombard the MID standing there and kill it with a elite rider (1-0).

IBT: Setler pair pops up at the hammer.

Barb suicides himself of a catapult and the army.

Beijing temple > rider.

1305AD [1]: Chop a barb that was in the way of our elite rider on the Eastern Reinforcement Highway.

Chip off 2 MID's at the Grinder.
Kill a Mongol settler pair which almost slipped past the hammer. (4-0).

1315AD [3]: I wonder what happened to turn 1310.

Chop 3 units at the grinder (7-0).
Chip a barb at the Highway. Annoying Highway robbers are always in the way..

IBT: A longbow and MID come to get grinded.

Beijing rider > rider.
Shanghai musket > rider.

1320AD [4]: Catapults bombard and army kills a settler pair. 2 more slaves..

Gathering the troops in the hammer.

Elite Rider kills the Longbow, and I thikn this is at least my second General Tso! [dance]

Kill ratio is something like 10-0 now.

IBT: Mongol MDI and Indian settler pair come to Anvil.

Canton rider > rider.

1325AD [5]: Gather the troops in the Hammer to attack Cumae. Pillage around it... it's size 8. Not so good... :undecide:

And all the cats miss at the grinder. Kill the offending MDI with an elite rider, though.
Kill a Roman one too, that was in the fog. (12-0)

I have difficulties decideing where to use General Tso. We have no wonders available, and no improvements of real use...

Able to drop sci to 80%, Chemistry still in 2.

IBT: Some highway robbers try to steal the horses of our riders, but they had guards set so the steal didn't succeed. Some minor bruises only.

There's a lot of traffic at the grinder: the Indian settler pair and two Mongol pikes.

1330AD [6]: Cats bombard at the grinder and vet riders finish off the troops, we get 2 slaves again.

Siege of Cumae:

the 2 cats bombard, and one hits, a pike is wounded. Another one hows up though.

The army attacks the reg pike in Cumae, and wins without losing any hp. The wounded pike is now on top.
The army kills it and we raze the city.
Get 3 slaves.

Hurry a rider in Canton - the most expensive thing for a while that is of real use.

Kill some amateur riders with pointy sticks halting the traffic at the highway.

IBT: A Roman MDI attacks our exposed rider at the hammer, but the heroic defenders of the Middle Kingdom defeat them. (18-0).

We research Chemistry > metallurgy @50% sci, -1gpt. Due in 27.

Beijing & Canton rider > rider.

1335AD [7]: Bombard and kill the 2 units at the Anvil. (20-0)

Kill a Roman MDI at the Hammer (21-0).

IBT: 3 Roman units appear to the Grind Crew.

Shanghai rider > rider.

1340AD [8]: The Rider Army has some trouble in the North with a reg spear, which takes off some 7hp... but the army wins. It was only a town.
Elite rider kills the second reg pike, and it appears the town was Neapolis. Raze it, get one slave. (23-0).

Kill the three units at the grinder, and the third one gives us a leader. :D (26-0).

IBT: Some teen gang tried to pull off a cool manouver and attack our Veteran Riders from two directions at the same time, but didn't manage and attacked right after each other. You might guess how it ended. Our Riders were promoted to Elite due to the awesome skills they showed.

1345AD [9]: Bombard the 3 Mongol units at the grinder and kill them. (29-0)

The leader rushes a rider in Shanghai. This really seems like a waste of leaders... but what else can I do?

IBT: Some Indian and Roman troops come to the Anvil.

Beijing & Shanghai rider > rider.

1350AD [10]: Bombard at Veii, but both cats miss.

Elite* rider attacks vet pike, loses taking 1hp of.
There's another vet too, I'll wait here and not attack.

Bombard and kill the units at the grinder.

Alltogether quite nice turns. The anvil works like a dream, except that it's running out of elite troops, most are elite*'s or vets.

Seems like the Roman core has vet pikes. We'll need to handle them more carefully, and let the army heal.

Alltogether my kill ratio was about 30-0. I think I lost 1 unit during the 10 turns. Is that anything near enough in a 3CC? :D

The Hammer, reinforced and with more reinforcements coming:
1350ad_hammer.jpg

Sir Bugsy - UP!
grs - on deck
Bede
andvruss
Ankka - can't believe his kill ratio

REMEMBER: 24h to post a "got it", total 48 to post turnlog and save.

30:1 kill ratio is AWESOME! :goodjob: SirPleb would be proud. Excellent work on the Hammer side.

I have it, although I have two games in front of it, so I probably won't get to it until tomorrow.

Pre-flight – 1350 AD – There was an Indian settler pair just north of the anvil, so I grabbed a healthy rider, whacked the pike and collected two slaves.

Diplo check – Gandhi has six cities, doesn’t have chemistry yet.
Caesar has seven cities, doesn’t have gunpowder yet.
Temujin has 12 cites and doesn’t have chemistry yet.

MM Canton to gather food for two turns, doesn’t effect the build.

We now have a strong army compared to everyone.

Our power curve has started to take off.

IBT – No attacks. Forgot to reset preferences and the IBT happens in about 3 seconds. How can you guys keep track of things with the animation turned off?

1. 1355 AD – A Mongol settler pair approaches the anvil.
@ Veii – we lose a rider but kill the two defending pikes.
Kills: Mongol pike (2 slaves), Roman archer,
Build another fort. Turning the anvil into the Gauntlet. :mischief: (5-1)

IBT – Kill a Roman knight at the hammer side.

2. 1360 AD – Kills: two Mongol MDI,
Lost: One rider at Bengal (8-2)
Move into position to take Bengal.
Build a wine colony next to Veii’s ruins.

IBT – Lose a rider on a mountain to a Mongol MDI. The first War Elephant appears at the anvil.

3. 1365 AD – Bombard everything at the anvil to red.
Kills: Mongol MDI, Roman MDI, Mongol LB, WE,
Kill the pike at Bengal and raze it. Collect two slaves.
Kill a legion at Antium. (14-3)
Decide that we need a galley now that we have the lighthouse to check for any islands.

IBT – The Indians serve up some targets this time. Kill a Roman LB.

4. 1370 AD – Kill a legion at Antium and burn it to the ground. Add another slave to the collection.
Other kills: WE, Indian LB
Spot a Mongol Keshik. (18-3)

IBT – Lose a rider to a Keshik. GA for the Mongols.

5. 1375 AD – Extend the gauntlet one tile close to Calcutta. Check on Gandhi and Caesar. They’re both playing a 5CC. How nice of them to play a variant with us. (18-4)

IBT – Caesar calls asking for peace he will give us all his cities, except Rome, all his gold and WM. No thanks, we’re completely insane.
Four new targets at the anvil.

6. 1380 AD – Approach the gates of Rome.
Spot an Indian settler pair, kill the pike and collect two slaves.
Kills: Keshik, 2 Mongol pikes, Indian LB

@Erdenet (Mongol) – Kill a pike and retreat from a second. (23-4)

IBT – A Keshik kills a redlined rider.

7. 1385 AD - @ Erdenet – Kill a pike and a LB. Raze it.
Kills: Mongol LB, Keshik,
Reach the gates of Rome and start pillaging.
@ Pisae – Lose a rider, kill the two pikes, raze it.
@ Pompeii – Kill the legion, raze it. Now Caesar gets to play a 3CC like us. :D
(29-6)

IBT – Kill a Roman MDI and a Mongol MDI

8. 1390 AD – Kills: Keshik, (32-6)
Build another fort in the gauntlet.

IBT – Nada.

9. 1395 AD – Destroy Rome’s barracks.
@ Viroconium: Kill a Legion.
@ Karachi – Kill two pikes. Raze it.
Drop science 10% so we can have some positive cash flow. (35-6)

IBT – Kill a LB coming out of Viroconium. A Roman galley sails around the south. Gandhi wants to talk. He won’t give us everything. Sorry.

10. 1400 AD – Build a fort across from Calcutta.

After Action – I’ve been using slaves to build outposts everywhere. I like seeing what’s going on.

I have been pushing slowly north at the anvil. We should be able to join up our forces and go directly NW instead of the long way around. We can begin an assault on Calcutta next turn.

I kept two riders in the area of the Roman galley (Canton).

Final tally: 7 cities razed, 36 kills, 6 brave soldiers join our glorious war dead.

Future Operations:

The Hammer:
ANK09_-_1400_AD_Hammer.jpg

Most of Force I is healing. Viroconium can be assaulted next turn. And Hispalis within a few turns. Caesar doesn’t have any iron, although he can make longbows. I would use this force to press southward and join with Anvil forces.

Force II is mostly healthy and is sitting at the gates of Rome. I would heal up the army which is over by Force I and assign it to Force II. I’m thinking Rome will be a tough nut to crack. Keep pillaging and maybe the pop will drop below 6.

The Anvil:
ANK09_-_1400_AD_Anvil.jpg

The red arrow shows the AI’s most recent trend. Since I built the two forts on the eastern side, they have been favoring the west side.

There is a force at the new fort south of Calcutta, complete with catapults. Calcutta should be able to be taken in the next turn or two.

To the NW, you see the harassment force which razed Karachi. You can either continue to pillage and harass or join it up with the main anvil force after Calcutta falls.

Save: http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/ANK09,_1400_AD.SAV

Good job, Bugsy. :goodjob:

I think we should send a small pillage groupd to check for any saltpeter sources. We really don't want to fight muskets here. And if the AI doesn't get them, this game looks almost like won. :D

Sir Bugsy - almost won the game
