It was preventable. The black teenager had a degree of agency in doing so. The first smart decision she made was dropping the drink and going away. Then the storekeeper shot her while she was retreating and got convicted of manslaughter for it.

She tried to pay for it, the shopkeeper took it off her and shot her as she was leaving without the OJ. The LAPD concluded the shopkeeper should be prosecuted, a jury found her guilty. This is about as clear cut as a case can get.
