It seems weird to say since the former Soviet Union use to be our ultimate enemy but i miss them. Sure the USA has enemies now but they are all second rate inconvieneinces. The Soviet Union could have lauched an attack that would have killed a hundred million in minutes... and that ignores biological weapons and conventional forces. Terrorist haven't killed as many people in 50 years as the soviets could have with one bomb. Side note: IF terrorist ever do detonate a nuke it will likely be one small one and casualties are much more likely to be number in the thousands not millions. The Chinesse are not a serious threat to us either. Between our allies, naval forces, etc. they can not beat us.

The Soviets launched sputnik and put the first human in space. They spured us into greatnest by providing a legitimate threat that we had to compete with. Sure there was a downside to the evil empire but overall i miss them. anyone else?

I sometimes imagine where'd we be today if the USSR was still around. Perhaps a race to Mars would have resulted in the first person stepping foot on Mars by now. Who knows where that type of competition could have taken us. Other than mutual nuclear annihilation of course.

of course my nostalgia is partly due to where i was in life during those decades. and for a short time i was in the Soviet Union.

I feel ripped off that it was hyped up so much.

Not really. The Soviets invaded my country, killed off a lot of our leaders, and then imposed communism on us for half a century & built a lot of ugly crap.

You can stick your soviets up your bum

Whoever came up with the idea that authenticity will necessarily have to clash with utilitarian morality, may have been on to something, as this thread proves.

I was born after the Soviet Union collapsed. And I voted in the last presidential election. That being said, I think Wayne's World made a decent case for being bummed communism fell:
#10: New maps.
#9: Is Yakov Smirnoff out of a job?
#8: Now they'll never find out what the thing on Mikhail Gorbachev's head was.
#7: Katarina Witt no longer has Forbidden Fruit appeal.
#6: The fall of Communism will deal a major blow to the trade union movement. Labor relations will revert to industrial revolutionary social Darwinism. Okay.
#5: Will the Beatles song be changed? ("Back in the Commonwealth of Independent, Back in the Commonwealth of Independent, Back in the Commonwealth of Independent Staaates.")
#4: Soviets can no longer be the go-to bad guys in spy movies. ("Who's James Bond gonna spy on now, the Guatemalans?")
#3: Playboy will no longer have "Girls of the Soviet Union" issues.
#2: No more bogus Soviet rock bands to make fun of.
#1: They won't be the first ones to say on Russian television, "Live! From New York! It's Saturday Night!"

I was asked today how I liked being evil. I like it quite fine, thanks.

Enjoy the Charlie Foxtrot that this thread will quickly become, once the mouth-foamers arrive to perform their ritual Cursing Of The Red Menace.

Sure, they slaughtered millions and wiped out the economy. But hey, at least there wasn't greed!

While I do not miss them, the world was undeniably a more stable place when it was east vs west. I know that's crazy sounding, but it's true.

Nah bro. It just seemed more stable, but with America controlling the world it seems much better.

If the Soviet Union still existed shows like The Americans would never be made. A show which I recommend highly btw:

Yes they're not only Communists but deep cover KGB sleeper agents! Living in your suburb! Acting normal!

I miss - possibly only in "the grass is greener" sense - that we missed the chance to create the oft-predicted hybrid of Soviet and Western cultures.

I think it was more predictable but not necessarily more stable. A vs B is easier to wrap your head around and follow than what we have now.

Glad I'm not the only one who uses the term "Charlie Foxtrot" :p

In a way, as said before, the USSR being around would provide more competition for the USA. However, it would also provide many problems, including the oppression of multiple nations. So, not really the best idea for it to be alive today.

Think about the long run. Without the "evil empire" would we have gone to the moon yet? I think not. As a species we benefit from exploration in the long run although some groups may suffer... like native South Americans in the 1500's.
