Are Adam and Eve in hell?

Eran....that is very interesting....can't say i know much about the Mormons...how well does Wikipedia represent you guys?

It is generally those who don't believe in the whole story who say it is sex, those who do say it wasn't. So I have found.

@Mowque: It does a fairly decent job, I think, at least on the basics, though I don't really look at it too much. It by necessity is written by people who assume that Mormonism isn't true, but that is what it should do. If you have more specific questions, I have a thread (see sig) although I do not claim to have all the answers.

Adam and Eve were supposed to populate the earth. How could they be punished for having sex?

It is not punishment for having sex. It is after the fact that they ate from the forbidden tree that implanted lust into their thoughts which made them no different than animals. The children that they created is the result of nature they are later bound to since they are no longer lustless immortal beings.

Funny that the tree of knowledge never gave them instructions on contraceptives.

They weren't married!!!

Implanted lust? I thought it implanted sensitivity to exposure of body parts?

Goofballs and grass. I lol'd.

The Catholic Church says those who are not baptized can't go to Heaven. On the other hand, there was no original sin before them.

Seems like a literal case of "only God knows". Me, I think they're in (comfortable) limbo.

Thank god 98% of the world would rather be told what to do by religious superiors than end up in this situation, and realize how ridiculous the whole 'organized religion' thing is.

Adam and Eve is not in hell. The whole story rest on their immortality in the material world will cease to exist if they eat the "tree of knowledge of good and evil." Also, they in consequence, will be banished from the Garden and will have to live a life of hard labor and such that we all inherit from their immortal sin. Bla blah blah.

The bible never been specific if the Garden is Heaven or anything like that at all. I assume it is another place. God's laboratory maybe...

Well, God told Balaam to go with the men who were sent to fetch him, yet God was subsequently angry that Balaam went, with no explanation or anything in between

Did the world exist outside the garden before they were cast out of it?

It is actually geographically possible for said Garden to be in modern Syria and Turkey too.

It definitely was not sex. The sin was disobedience. There is no reason to think that the fruit was an apple either, as it is only referred to as a fruit. Some say it was a fig, assuming that they would take the closest foliage to make cloths. Most would say that it is not a fruit that exists now.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying sex. In the one of the epistles (I forget which, but could look it up if I had the time) it says that withholding sex from a spouse for any reason (except for prayer and fasting, and even then only with a prior mutual agreement) is sinful, while using sex for comfort and emotional closeness with your spouse without any regard to procreation is presented positively. Song of Solomon appears to speak of cunnilingus (using metaphors instead of being so crude to say it directly, of course) in a positive light.

Adam and Eve definitely were married. It was the first and archetypal marriage. True, there were no human authorities to recognize it or add anything like an actual marriage contract, but the lack of ceremony does not make it any less of a marriage. Hesed love is the defining quality of marriage, not those traditions.

It was between 4 rivers. One of them is believed to be in Ethiopia, and we really aren't sure about the last one. One theory is that Eden was really big, so the whole middle east was Eden. I've heard that there is a reference in Psalms that strongly implies that the fall happened at the sire where the Temple of Solomon was later built.

I'm not quite sure how rivers are supposed to survive the deluge and the great geological changes that created mountains and emptied the water from the flood into newly created Ocean basins. Perhaps the rivers were completely different, and just happened to have the same name.

I believe that it is thought that the outside world did exist, and that humanity was supposed to work to make the outside world become just as paradisaical. It wouldn't have been nearly as harsh as after the fall, but not as perfect as Eden so that humanity had something to do. Work is good, but backbreaking labor a result of sin.

It is often thought that in the 3 days between Christ's death and resurrection he was ministering to those in Sheol, so that we can expect at least those Old Testament characters who faithfully performed sacrifices and kept the law to have been redeemed then and to be in heaven.
