Bulgaria tensions lead to Roma home demolitions

Bulgaria has had to suspend the demolition of two Roma settlements because of an appeal from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), but pressure from nationalist parties suggests it will go ahead.

Residents of the south-western village of Garmen marched in the capital, Sofia, at the weekend to demand more demolitions.

There is also tension in the Sofia suburb of Orlandovci, where a smaller number of houses inhabited by Roma are slated for destruction.

Human rights groups accuse the government of bowing to the nationalists, and of risking wider conflicts between Roma and non-Roma Bulgarians.

Between 5-10% of Bulgaria's 7.4 million people are of ethnic Roma background.

Bulgaria is the poorest EU member state, and many people - Roma and non-Roma, rich and poor - live in buildings that could be classified as illegal.

In the mid 1960s, she told the BBC, about 20 formerly nomadic Roma were forced to settle by the Communist authorities on agricultural land on the edge of Garmen.

A group of Roma returned from selling mushrooms they had picked, and celebrated with loud music. When locals complained, a brawl developed, and there were attempts to set fire to the Roma shacks.

Chill there, Raf, it was from a movie ;)

ı know it's from a movie . Have planted the flag in 20 planets and 2 comets and some 35 astreoids . Hence ı know Aliens do not exist . And you might hurt the RAF with the notion .

Where do the colours of Bulgaria's flag come from? (I think we haven't covered this before)

Well, the traditional story goes that they resemble the prime qualities of Bulgaria (and the Bulgarians...which is probably cripplingly ironic when you think about it.): the white resembles the purity, the green resembles our beautiful nature and the red resembles the blood of our ancestors who died for our homeland.

That's what my kindergarten teacher told me. I'd say that the version "well, so, a bunch of nationalists found out about the French Revolution but didn't want to steal the French tricolour, because that would be awkward as hell" is probably more truer to history.

I would have gone for ‘slightly defaced Slavic tricolour’ but that's as good a folk etymology as any.

Does Balgariya have its own version of chucrut/sauerkraut?

Basil II: great East Roman emperor, or the greatest East Roman emperor?

Spoiler :
Yeah, somebody probably already asked, but I had to.

Who would you consider to be the greatest Bulgarophiles?

Bulgaria why you smuggle people in a truck with no air hole ?
(How very German of you ! :mischief:)

( That was a very bad business all round, hope they bust the entire smuggling ring )

Who would you consider to be the greatest Bulgarophiles?

These exist? Hmm, apart from that brief moment in 1912, we were generally ignored as "those bastards near Turkey who always screw things up". Ironically, during that brief moment in time, we were called "the Prussia of Balkans", while Sofia was "the Small Vienna".

I know, I know!

^Do Bulgarians often visit Thessalonike?

I am sure some live here still (likely more before the economic crisis), but there are no stats other than the BestMacedonia claim that around 1 million Bestmacedonians live here, ie one person in every one and a half people in this city are Bestmacedonian :)

I'd assume that a lot do, but Halkidiki is far more visited and preferred, due to the beaches and not being half-cement, half-sand.

Yes, but Slunchev Bryag has awful food and cheap, and the chance that you might die increases the more you stay there. You're declared technically dead if you're a foreigner tourist and have stayed for more than a month. It's merely a technicality of "when".
