Ask a Dutchman!

http://www.nu.nl/binnenland/2951628/maastricht-loopt-parkeergeld-mis-wietpas.html

As we talked about earlier, the last government instated the Wietpas to prevent foreigners from buying weed. This means that fewer foreigners (mainly Belgians and French) have travelled to Maastricht, a city in the souh, to buy weed. This has had a serious impact on the amount of parking fees and fines the city has collected. According to the city, they missed about two hundred thousand in the past half year.

I bet those bureaucrats in The Hague didn't see that coming!

 I wonder if that's why the plans have been put on ice? :mischief:

I believe it's a self-propelled howitzer, actually.

A tank has a turret (as in the original pic), as it's basically a gun mounted on a chassis. A howitzer (although also a gun), may be mobile, but it usually lacks the armor the tank is known for, because it has a different role on the battlefield. (In essence, it's a different design - although WW II saw some odd hybrids, like the German Stug, from the class of tank-destroyers, which had a more or less fixed gun.)

Most tanks, but not all, have turrets. The number of tank designs without turrets is very small, admittedly, but it still means that tanks don't have a turret per definition. Turrets are not exclusive to tanks either. The Panzerhaubitze 2000 operated by the Dutch army is a case in point.

I am playing the Dutch in an attempt to log my first Civ4 immortal win. Was this a good choice?

If it were Civ3, it would be, seeing as they have lotsa money and can hire hyperpikemen.

Let us know. :) (I've played the Dutch quite a few times in RFC myself).

Panzerhaubitze (as the name implies) is an armored howitzer, i.e. it's a hybrid of a tank and howitzer. (Btw, you're linking to a 1917 "tank"; I would personally call that a proto-tank, from the days that tanks did not yet have turrets. Your second link shows the hybrid Panzerhaubitze; you may note how the turret is placed to the rear - unlike with the tank in front of which our future Minister of Defense is depicted.)

I believe it's a self-propelled howitzer, actually. Still, I'm getting rather fed up of the continuous defence cuts.

Difficult to identify but, it appears to be a light tank from the CV90 family - possibly the Dutch CV9035NL;

This is a "Light Tank", not a Main Battle Tank like the Leopard II or Abrams. It's light-weight (easy to kill), air-mobile, sports a low calibre (harmless) gun and is cheap. "Not a vehicle with which to oppose the enemies of the Queen."

But you can take your kids to see one of those and tell them that they once rode a tank!

Speaking of German-Dutch-connectivity:
I was highly amused when an American friend of mine referred to the Dutch as 'swamp Germans' :p

Oh .

Can anyone tell me the average dutch mobil phone prices (€/minute or SMS, flatrate)? Or at least some rough numbers :D?
Because I'm wondering if I should get a German mobile phone contract, with some EU options, or should get a new contract in the Netherlands.
The former has the advantage that I can easiliy call home, and that I can also take care about it before moving, but I guess this might be quite a bit more expensive than getting a new contract.

I just picked up a €20 euro phone at the Saturn and a German prepaid SIM-card when I moved here. Having a foreign number sucks if you want people to call you, and is also probably more expensive for yourself than a Dutch number too.

I'm using pre-paid myself, but if you're happy with your current contract you might want to stick with it.

For price checks: http://www.bellen.com/ (in Dutch only)

or: http://www.kiesmobiel.nl/?xtor=SEC-1 (same, sorry).

Thanks, google helps here :D.
Seems that it's cheaper in NL than in D :hmm:.

Wait...I thought only I would have to pay the roaming fees, and not the person who calls me...no...wait...I guess they'd have to pay for an international call, yes?
Uuuh...okay, that's not good.

 guess I'll get then a sim in NL, that's probably easier, since I'll not phone that much home (and can also use Skype, if I want to).

I guess I have two questions:
Where is the center of biology research in the Netherlands?
What loanwords does Dutch get from Indonesia?

Not yet a dutchman, but since I'm here: From what I've heard (from my Indonesian fellow student...), bio research is big in Amsterdam, Groningen and Wageningen. Can't say more yet :D.
EDIT: But what I know doesn't have to mean anything, since I'd have no idea what to answer where the bio research centers in Germany are ^^.

The medical research centre? There are several, apart from the ones mentioned by The_J, notably at TNO Delft, Erasmus University Rotterdam and AMC hospital Amsterdam. It's a university educational specialization, as well as a HBO (Higher Professional Education) one.

Since first contact around 1600 are some 19,000 Indonesian words and concepts have entered Dutch. (Although they are now beginning to disappear - I must confess that beyond the obvious kris) I can't think of anyone at the moment.)

The mobile phone market is pretty competitive here.

Skype is good. ;)

Hmm, some names to probably keep in mind. Thanks.

When you guys go on dates, do you "go dutch"? :mischief:

Go Dutch is to split the bill, right?

I am in the habit to take the bill on the first few dates, sometimes girls/women will insist on paying half (funny that, I never came across a girl that wanted to pay the full bill on a date...)
But that was when I had money...
I currently have a girlfriend and we split the bill, yes
