Ask a Homeschooler

I mean my parents are planning on sending me there.
Just checking. I know a kid in school who narrowly managed to talk his parents out of going to college with him.

I'm curious, where did you hear you are not allowed to pray in public school? I know a girl who prays each day before lunch and a bunch of Muslims are allowed to leave class to pray during Ramadan.

We use a God based computer curriculum from Alpha-Omega productions name Switched-On-Schoolhouse, it contains pretty much everything I do is on there including a bible study set. I never even heard of a YEC before I came here.

 this is the exact program I use.

A YEC is a young Earth Creationist, someone who believes God created the Earth 6-10 thousand (Give or take) years ago.

How do you think your parents would react if they knew you were participating in an online forum like this one where so many different viewpoints are represented?

Obviously being homeschooled crippled me and if it weren't for that I wouldn't be failing at life so hard right now:rolleyes:

Well, of course. You like Rhianna.

I was homeschooled my entire life, but when I was done I hit the ground running just fine. I got a GED at 17 went to community College for a year, now at 19 I'm a Junior at a Public University pursuing a B.S. in Mathematics with a 3.81 GPA, friends, and a hot girlfriend (this one was only just recently but w/e).

Obviously being homeschooled crippled me and if it weren't for that I wouldn't be failing at life so hard right now:rolleyes:

Nothing wrong with being homeschooled, but we were you schooled by untrained people using an unaccredited bible curriculum?

in austria, the homeschooled need to take exams in every subject in public schools to, well, get actual certificates with actual marks. you know, the stuff you have to show your potential employers over and over for the rest of your life.

apparently nothing of that kind exists in the usa, so what the hell do the homeschooled have to show for job applications?

Nope never, i've been raised as a christian, I believe God created the universe with all my being.

Programmed, like a robot and no willingness to explore the alternatives.

Scary.

Mirriam would be pleased.

I am not conscerned about being hampered in possible pursuit of a scientific career cause I am not pursuing a scientific career but a political one.

As having a decent level of scientific knowledge and understanding is somehow seen as undesirable for politicians in a society on the cusp of many significant technological developments.

Yep, you got that right.

How long before your parents find out about this thread and ban you from coming here altogether?

I don't think they'd ban me, but I think they'd be surprised at how many different view points are on here.

Darth Caesar do your parents (and presumably yourself) believe that America is a "Christian Nation" and is chosen by "God" to do something religiously important?

Yes we do.

How do you think your parents would react if they knew you were participating in an online forum like this one where so many different viewpoints are represented?

Not sure, they probably would be supportive thinking it could round me out some, they also might be indifferent, all they think I do on here is play mafia.

I suppose that is the difference, both of my parents are college graduates (my Dad even has a Phd) and Atheists as well so my homeschooling experience was probably somewhat different than most. That said my parents never really taught me much, I mean my Mom taught me how to read and basic grammar stuff and I took a few online classes (mostly math) and my Dad helped me with the math. Overall though I wasn't even on a curriculum let alone an accredited one, my parents made sure I could read and do Algebra and that was enough. I actually spent most of my time playing Runescape and Starcraft. Really I was unschooled as much as homeschooled, so whenever I see people saying you need school and accredited curriculum etc. it just irritates me because I think I'm ding fine even though I was allowed to just be free and explore my world when I was young. In fact I was 12 before I had any kind of school work at all (aside from learning to read). In fact I credit being allowed to run freely like that with part of what lets me think the way I do now. Now again obviously my situation is different than those being homeschooled for religious conformity reasons, and people who do that to their kids make me sick. But kids are very resilient and can learn much faster when they are older anyway, so trying to stuff them with all the best knowledge from the earliest age is not necessarily the best way to raise a smart and successful person.

Homeschool kids don't seem to have problems getting jobs or getting into collage.

Have you had any lessons in logic? (Something which is very underrepresented in most education systems.) Have you learnt any debating skills? (Very important for your future political career)

Do you play any team sports?
There is a big youth government group where I live.

Homeschool sports is pretty big. My group on the boys side has 4 competitive High School basketball teams, 2 football teams, a Soccer team, 2 Baseball teams and a Track team. For Basketball we go to Springfield Mo. for national tournament every year where there are over 300 other homeschool teams.

Yes we do [believe America is a Christian Nation].
From Wikipedia, the Treaty of Tripoli was passed by the Founding Fathers and ratified by the Senate.
Treaty of Tripoli said:
As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion

I repeat:
I'm curious, where did you hear you are not allowed to pray in public school? I know a girl who prays each day before lunch and a bunch of Muslims are allowed to leave class to pray during Ramadan.

Just to nitpick, your a homeschoolee not a homeschooler.

Can't speak for him, but I don't think they'd mind too much. They do know I'm on here.

At the risk of sounding snarky, I'm really not surprised, at all.

It did sound a bit snarky, but I would probably take it as more of a pointless comment than a mean one. What was the point of that?

I repeat:

Depends on how you look at it. They never intended to force any religion on anyone (Either any specific denomination of Christianity or Christianity in general) but they still were inspired by Christianity. Not sure how much that really means but its true. Most of the Founders were Christians and they certainly had Christian values in mind. But they also recognized the need for freedom to choose to believe in something else or not to believe in anything at all.
