Ask a Mormon, Part 3

It is in the Doctrine and Covenants, which is revelation given (in this case, and for most of the D&C) to Joseph Smith. Were I a much better scriptorian I could give you section and verse, but alas, I am not. Eschatology has always been a weak point with me.

D&C 57:3.... I'm pretty sure that answers the question

3 And thus saith the Lord your God, if you will receive wisdom here is wisdom. Behold, the place which is now called Independence is the acenter place; and a spot for the btemple is lying westward, upon a lot which is not far from the courthouse.

(direct quote from http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/57/3#3)

The temple in question is the one that will be built either immediately before or immediately after (I don't remember) the return of Christ.

(Thanks for finding it, by the way.)

np.... LDS.org (is not only set to be my homepage) has a real easy and great search tool ;)

So, have you looked any more into finding an answer to my question about how to interpret Jesus' answer to the Saducees' question about marriage in the resurrection, without conflicting with so much of Mormonism?

When I searched for it the only Mormon interpretation I could find was that Jesus was saying that there are no weddings in heaven but that celestial marriages begun here would still continue--but if that is the case then he really didn't answer the Sadducees' question at all, and he would still have to say which brother's wife the woman would be.

Shoot, Jesus the Christ has a great answer to that exact question, but naturally, my copy is in storage right now.

His real answer to the Saducee's question, as I said, was "resurrection happens", because that is where they disagreed - marriage in heaven was only used to illustrate the issue.

And no, I don't have the answer in terms of what the Church says on the matter either, but I will try and find out.

Notice Eran said "one" of the sites where he would come back. Mormons believe that Jesus has already returned to several places (post-resurrection), and that there will be multiple sites where he will be seen in the future. For example, appearances are reported in 3 Ne 27 in the BoM which may post-date the 40-day post-resurrection ministry in the Old World. Moroni, the last author of the BoM, also reported having spoken face-to-face with the Savior.

In recent times, Joseph Smith reported seeing the Lord in upstate NY in what is referred to as the "First Vision," in the Kirtland Temple in Ohio, and on various other occasions. One prophet, Lorenzo Snow, later pointed out to his granddaughter the exact location in the Salt Lake Temple where he had spoken face-to-face with the Savior. Other accounts are not as well known. Melvin Ballard, a modern day apostle, reported a personal interview with the Savior. A seminary teacher of mine did also, though he wouldn't say much about it except to say that it had changed his life. In most cases, the experiences are not publicly reported because they are considered too sacred to discuss lightly.

As far as the "end times" variety of events though, we believe that Jesus will come to a valley in northwest Missouri (about an hour north-northeast of Independence) called Adam-ondi-ahman, that he will appear at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem to halt the battle of Armageddon, and that he will be seen quite a lot at Independence, where the New Jerusalem will be built.

Did the Mormon church really use your tithe money to fight Gay Marriage legality? And from how high up did that decision come from?

I found this article that explains the Church's position, but it doesn't mention the use of tithing. It does imply that the Church fully expected that some of its members would disagree on Proposition 8.

The thing is, given my view of gay marriage, that although I personally don't think the Church should have gotten involved, I am somewhat indifferent on Prop 8 itself. I think reasonable compromises can be made that would mostly satisfy most of both sides, but I don't see the denial of certain privileges (as little sense as it may make to deny those privileges to one group but not another) as a form of oppression. Just my opinion.

(i'm sure it has been covered already but this thread is too long)

What is the Mormon Church's stance on evolution?

The Church basically tells its members they can believe whatever they want. BYU, a Church run school, teaches straight evolution (I have heard) and has a fairly well regarded paleontology department (again, I have heard). Among individual members you will find all sorts of views. I accept the theory of evolution.

Thanks, i was just wondering...:)

I do not believe that tithing money was used. That being said, I'm not at all happy about this prop 8 business at all, and I made sure that I had nothing to do with it.

I didn't have to get involved anyways, since I don't live in California, but there were plenty of members around here volunteering to support it and stuff. But I didn't and wouldn't have even if I lived in CA.
