If only we could monitor yours Fox. You spelled grammar wrong. :hmm:

Persianboy--I understand you'd like modern services.
The United States will not trade with your country however Russia and China will. Why not simply trade for turbines and power plant equipment with them?

Exactly how well do you speak, read and write Farsi?
آیا شما فارسی حرف میزنید ؟
Aya shoma Farsi harf mizanid?

(psst - that's one of the languages of Iran)

Now that would be one interesting thread.
You can read it here. Both sides. A little strong on both sides but both sides.

This thread is an ongoing conversation between a guy in Beirut and another who's in a kibbutz on the northern border.

Oh and Fox you spelled monitor wrong as well. ;)

PersianBoy,
In light of the current event with Lebanon and Isreal it is believed in the west that Syria and Iran are behind Hizboallah. Ahmadinejad has made comments that if Isreal attacks Syria then Iran would attack Isreal and it doesn't take much math to figure out that this would bring America into the mix and likely would result in America taking military action against Iran and Syria. While I understand the Isreali response as I lived there and in Lebanon for a few years. For all my understanding of Isreal, they are a loose cannon and I wouldn't be surprised to see them chase Hizboallah all the way into Syria. My question finally, how do your people feel about the growing tensions and the knowledge the the US has forces on both side of your country if Ahmadinejad decide to attack Isreal?
I can't believe anyone wants war, but sadly things are not looking very good for either of our countries. IMO. As I write this Isreal is building troops on the boarder of Southern Lebanon and calling up reserves.
BTW it is nice to have civilized conversation of this nature.

PersianBoy: Congratulations on a very interesting thread.

I have a slightly different set of questions, based in a curiousity of my family history, but I feel I need to give some social history for wider understanding of the questions and also to give context...

Background:

I am of Indian heritage. My family partly hail from the Parsi community, the old Zoroastrians that fled Persia for the west of India around the 10th century AD. Many such communities of these Parsis (the preservers of Persia's most ancient religion) are found in Bombay/Mumbai but there are also large numbers down the west coast of India too. If I am not mistaken, I believe that the largest numbers of Parsis today are in fact in India, not Iran. We no longer follow this religion by the way, owing more to the passage of time, migration and other cultural influences.

I am told by my ancestors, and the (sometimes quite cryptic and vague) histories they have left us behind, that the reasons for fleeing from Persia (c.10th century AD) were twofold:

a) A major drought took place, with a major river drying up severely. Fresher fields needed to be found. Apparently, it was a significant cause of large scale migrations across Persia and north India around this time.

b) That they were fleeing political and religious persecution. Indian rulers gave refuge.

Question relating to a)

~ Have you heard of this drought event?
~ I still have no idea what river this may have been. Any ideas or clues?

And to b)

~ Do you have any knowledge of this historical persecution?
~ What is left of Zoroastrianism and its legacy in today's Iran?
~ What is the prevailing attitude towards Parsis and indeed Zoroastrianism today?
~ Would they be welcomed back for example?

Bonus trivia questions:

~ Did you know that the singer from Queen, Freddie Mercury, was a Parsi?
~ Does it please you to hear that the descendants of these migrants fought the British and their claim to rule India, tooth and nail? :mischief:

EDIT:

Whomp: You have spelt "spelled" wrong btw ;) (and it's late cos I have been on the wheels of steel)

Ordinarily, I don't question people's grammar or spelling but I thought he was being a bit rude and had to call him out on it.

Great questions btw.

Here's another question for PersianBoy:

Do Iranians have as much of a problem with subtlety and wry humour as post #49 demonstrates?

If he in fact spelled/spelt the word incorrectly then there would have been humor/humour in the irony. As with you it's been a long day and perhaps my humor/humour is a bit slow at the moment. Now go get some sleep it's later there than it is here.:)

Hey Persian Boy,

At first when i saw this thread i thought "i can't under stand it, it must be rubish" and whomps trying to hard. But after i read through what you wrote i think alot of its great and you speak alot better english than i speak persian.

About the 5-10 percent hardliners, this is the way it is in every country. You might think americans, israelis, russians and french want to bomb iran but in reality it is the 5-10 who spread the word to the average people who want to get on with their life and not worry about iran.

Anyway this is a question and answer thread so here goes:

1. Is there much foreign tourism in Iran? can you give me any infomation about it. What restrictions are there on travling there.

2. Whats your oppion on Israel? Should it be removed? or just left the way it is. Do you think Iran should open up relations with Israel?

Thanks! What a great thread. I've always wanted to know more about life inside Iran. It's so hard to tell what actually goes on from what we hear in the west...!

Another quick question: did Iranians hear about the supposed law that required religious minorities to wear badges and dress in a particular way (link). It was a complete fabrication by a canadian newspaper (or at best, a bad translation...), but I was wondering if it made news in Iran at all...
me never see such things in Tehran capital city of Iran and also in Hamadan where I live
in past time near about 1000 years ago I read about Zonnar and other signs that non-muslims must woren to others know that they are non-muslims and can use pig meat or alcohol or other thing that prohibted for muslim
IMO this was a freedom for non-muslims to freely use things that muslims can't use and wear. in some books said that few non practical muslims used that signs to use freely alcohol and others, because there was a rule in Islam that every muslim must prevent other MUSLIMS from prohibited thing like pig meat and alcohol, but non-muslims can use them and with that sign other didn't annoy them.

but in today of Iran all this things and using them are redicelious
I never see such things as I said and never heard about them but everyone who suspend can ask Christian, Jews and Zoroastrians of Iran by these links:
(plz notify me from results)
http://www.amordad.net/ for Zoroastrians
http://www.iranjewish.com/ for Jews
http://www.arir.org/ for Chritians(Armanians)

In street I saw some youth that wear signs like Cross, Ahura Mazda( Signs of Zoroastrians, a man with wings) and even signs of Nazies. Maybe some of them were non-muslims but I think many of them are muslims like ancient Iran(espicially whom wear sign of Ahura Mazda. Wearing of these signs are voluntary and I can buy and wear them and official athorities let you wear them but religious muslims would think that everybody uses them are non-muslim

An Iranian university-friend of mine said that nobody really wants the mullahs in charge, they just seem to be stuck with them. Would you agree with her at all? What's your take on the whole separation-of-church-and-state thing? Do you think it's a good idea in general, or just for some specific countries/religions?
various people have various ideas
fundamentalists think only about a religious state (church with state) and modernists think about states like western states (church without states)
but most of poeple don't care
I hear in news that many poeple of western countries wanting peace but why this poeple don't go to street and change the president who want war, for example in news and in site like this site I hear from poeples that they don't want war, poeples live in USA, also hear from others that must nuke Iran and every country that stand in front of USA plans, but before a election I guess nobody can tell number of war pros is more than peace pros or vice versa?
wanting Mollas to rule Iran or vice versa is like this matter
IMO must of people don't care about who is ruler and governer unless the ruler or governer do very badly
if ruler or governer do very badly then poeple go to street and wanna another governer?
I don't think Iran be in this step

and remember only very very few rulers and governers do so bad that cause people go to streets IMO

The United States will not trade with your country however Russia and China will. Why not simply trade for turbines and power plant equipment with them?
Iran trade with them as Russia build nuclear planet for Iran in Bushehr.
but other important matter is pollution
Russia joined with in a project for building planes by the TOPLOF 114 (I with this will be correct) named inside of Iran "Iran 114"
China and Russia themselves buy technologies from western countries and Maybe u don't forgot Chernobil
China have some project to build some dam for Iran
Iran is a oil exporter country but using oil that could sell in oil markets for burning in planets to produce electricity have oppurtunity cost and with this high prices of fuels
Iran is a developing country and need capital and money for building and developing. less export of oil and fuel means less money for developing projects
by these conditions (polution and high prices of oil) renewable and clear energy resources is needed
using solar and wind energy gonna to be common in Iran but more energy resources is needed because of rapid rate of growing to energy
you live in USA and maybe know that a high part of electricity that americans use come from nuclear planets and also for other countries
If you mean enriching uranium in unnecessery for Iran and Iran can import Uranium from out of borders, remember that others can use it and say if you do that or don't do something, there are no uranium. this condition maybe occured if Iran depand on electricity produced by imported uraniums

today every country try to diversify its resources of energy to in emergency condition, have more choices

in last winter Russia cut gas of Ukrain and other countries by this reason that prices that they give is very low, if this situation occur for Iran and in future Russia says price of Uranium is very low and it must be doubled or tripled then Iran have no choice except paying prices that Russia wanna (in conditons that western countries force Iran to enrich Uranium in Russia or other places)
economic matters also must seen, maybe price of enriching Uranium in Iran be lower then Russia and also must remember that enriching Uranium inside of Iran build some job oppurtunities for iranian Youth that REALLY need job (remember high level of unemployment in Iran)
