I'm gonna live with VRCW. I like his thermostat settings.

I have a thermostat, so the heat comes on based on the internal temperature.
Once fall starts, and the temperature is consistently below 10 C, the heat sometimes kicks in. In the early fall, even below 10 C at night, the house is pleasant enough for no heat. It's only after being serially cold for many days does the house's heat become a sanctuary.

I have it at 17 when we're home in the evening. I have it at 15 C at night. The heat's off during the day

My landlord has the boiler set up so it just won't come on until the outdoor temp is below 60 fahrenheit 16 centigrade. So having some experience with that, I'd say it's about right and you normally nave no need to turn it on if it is above that.

I like my thermostat set around 70 F. Yes, I know it's wimpy, and yes, I know
that's not carbon neutral.

It's settled, I'm never going to Ireland.

When I came to Germany 3 weeks ago, after being away for a few days, they announced in the airplane that the outside temperature was -1 degrees. It was around 8:30 in the morning. It drops below 0 in a lot of nights. Ireland is lucky compared to this. :p

Despite what I said though, the temperatures have been a bit higher in the past 4 days or so, and will likely continue to be this way for the next 4-5 days. There's always a period of just-a-bit-more-than-a-week at the end of October that's a lot warmer than the normal autumn temperatures, I noticed that in a looot of places, including the place where I spent my whole life until not so long ago.

I like the cold, I sleep with the heater off when it's above 10C when It drops below that I put my comfy fleece clothes on, at about 5C I put an extra fleece blanket on my bed, below 0C I walk down to my basement and turn my heater on (It's gas) my gas bill is pretty low about $300/month of course My stove is gas too (note $100 is the average, about $500) note I live in a 2000+ sqft house

There isn't any heating device at my home. You're all girly men. :p

I turn the air conditioning on when the temperature is above 26 degrees Celsius, though.

I think around 66 or 67 F.

Lets keep in mind that we are talking about the temperature outside, not inside.
Answered before I even asked. :)

That said, I have no idea what the outside temperature is when my heat comes on. My thermostats are set at 17-18 Celsius for the main living area, and 15 for my bedroom. I have no idea what my brother keeps the downstairs at. If I find it's too cold in the living room, I grab a sweater or a blanket and turn on the electric fireplace for a bit.

I don't remember the last time we had our central heating on at my family's house. I'm not sure if it even works. I think it technically does, but typically heats the second floor about 20 degree warmer than the lower floor and has an odd smell when first turned on so we don't really use it. We have space heaters in some parts of the house in the winter, but for the most part just try to dress more warmly. I guess we probably have the heat on when it is around or below freezing outside (40 degrees Fahrenheit maybe, but probably not 45), but it doesn't get that way in the Atlanta area all that often for for very long. (Sure, it will go below freezing at night in the winter, but usually get back up to the mid 60s by early afternoon.)

We used to like to have the air conditioning on to keep it below 71 all year round, but in the past few years (likely because my mom is through menopause and so doesn't get so many hot flashes now) we probably let it get up to about 76.

In my apartment I typically don't like to turn on either the heat or the air conditioner, and only do so to compensate for when my roommate has been using the other one too much. That means I'm more likely to use the heat in the summer and air conditioner in the winter, but neither for very long. In general there is no need to use either in our apartment as the building is heated/cooled enough.

You're skipping heating oil and wood options?

Oh, well thats because I dont live in a log cabin and have running water.

Kidding kidding.

I have only had gas and electric and I can say I am much more of a nazi when gas is being used as it's more expensive.

Though even if you can bundle yourself up and leave it off, it's not necessarily a good idea as you could run into the pipe burst problem. I know some places in the south are poorly insulated and the heat of the house is part of the way of keeping the pipes from freezing.

Outside temperature is meaningless.
I start the heater when the room temperature falls to something like 15 or 14 °C.
